It's hard to compare T:A player count with T1 and T2, given the market was entirely different in 1998/2001. Lots of homes didn't even have a PC back then, and a lot of those that did were on dial-up. Gaming as a whole was still fairly niche compared to now. If you compare T2 against Quake 3, it held up quite well for a FPS at that time, especially one so unique and challenging. Tribes is always going to be a little outside the mainstream at best, and there's only so much you can dumb it down before you lose what it's supposed to be. If you're making a new Tribes game, you should know that going in and your business model should account for it. I get the impression Prophecy/Hirez kind of wing it when it comes to making games profitable. Start making the game now -- pouring money into it -- and figure out how to make money off of it later (hopefully, otherwise kill it to save the company).
Seems like even Prophecy don't expect the game to sell particularly well. I hope they have a plan to support it even with a small number of devs even if the game doesn't go gangbusters.
Tribes looks like a wild fun time but I'm so scared as I'm not that good at fast paced games but I love competetive team games. Still hoping to try it out in EA though
Something was said in here that actually makes me a bit worried about the future of this IP as is. You mentioned how a streamer may not enjoy themselves if they jump in without someone to hold their hand and explain; all that is tribes. Wouldn't that go for just about any new player? If thats what it currently takes for someone to start having fun, Tribes is screwed. You also compare tribes to league of legends as a reason why its technicality is not a major issue, this maybe an inappropriate comparison. Reason being is that every other MOBA was at least 80 percent league of legends, and the entire genre as a whole is basically dead short of a handful of games. Above that Tribes Ascend died heavily due to similar reasons, as well as a great number of other games with high skill such as Quake Champions, Paragon, and LawBreakers.

74 concurrent players right now. Why is there a paywall? Do these people actually think they're in a position to be charging admission? Beggars can't be choosers, -Hirez- Prophecy.
If we go back to trailer they released month ago that is exactly what t3 needs to be. If you know nothing about it seeing that stuff makes you feel something special. Issue here is translating that into environment where it can grow. We are not going to have any kind of mod support nor ability to host servers and to me that is just death sentence. Game like tribes has immense potential same kind that UT or Quake does. But how can we grow organically and show the world what this is about unless we have our box to play in. We would be in same spot even if we had big maps and vehicles, since issues presented are same. Game like tribes needs some kind of ecosystem very similar to how CS does. CS doesn't teach you how to play and improve community tools do. I know it is not fair to compare t3 to CS but at least would could have some Ski maps and servers, some FFA/TDM/CTF you know place to chill and socialize and get better why enjoying the game. Simple things like that can go very long way in giving game the growth it needs in addition to game being developed. That is the path to eventually get to a point where we can have Big tribes as well again.
I think more than anything they need to figure out a way for new players to enjoy their first experiences playing T3, ideally, with friends. Making it easy to hit midairs may help a little, but it also means new players are getting /hit/ by midairs all the time too from better players. I think the game needs better onboarding, and more stuff that will be fun to do with a friend together in a server even if you're a scrub.
@@omgitsfishstix Stuff like midairs and tweaks like that can come it is not what is going to make it or break it, neither will any single game mode. They need to facilitate community growth and tribes has potential to accommodate many different communities. Big maps and vehicles doesn't do anything on its own since that can be just as daunting as any other game mode without proper support. Since just how you can get dunked on smaller mode you can feel pointlessness of being on giant map while getting dunked on. Honestly I couldn't care less what kind of modes we get since we can get some of them eventually but what concerns me is that there is zero plan to support private servers and moding because without that I do not see long term future, and that is the reason why I mention CS since it wouldn't exist today as we know if it didn't have it as its backbone.
@@omgitsfishstix Salty Octopus did an interview with one of the lead devs, if I remember right, his name was Mick Larkins. All of the promises that Mick made, in response to the questions he was asked? Yeah, none of his promises have made it into the game. In regards to the onboarding. The question was asked, can we have ghosts, time trial ghosts, that can teach us capping routes etc. Mick said yes! Erez doesn't seem to think that is a priority. And yet, as a noob, I want ghosts to follow, so I can have at least 1-2 capping routes I can practice, and use. Worst part is, even if I watch a TH-cam video with a capping route I can try to copy, I can't even choose a map in the training mode to try it out on. Because the training mode is just as garbage and pathetic as it was in T:A. What is it they say about the definition of insanity?
@@zalamael What kind of promises from what I remember Mick seems grounded. Ghosts are useless on their own we need spectator mode first and ability to control said ghost. So there is plenty of time to implement such things.
@@MarkoLomovic I would disagree with you on that. From my perspective, I couldn't even begin to show you a capping route, I just tend to make it up as I go along, which isn't optimal (me slow). I can of course watch pro player videos showing capping routes, but I can't even choose a map to practice on in the training mode, because it is so bare bones and lacking any kind of care. A low effort afterthought etc. And yet, people like me would ask for something like that as a matter of high importance, because I want to learn, I want to practice, I want to get better at the game, and learn how to cap. I remember when T:A was in its death throes, it was due to a lack of cappers, and every match devolved into D stacks, because no one wanted the responsibility of capping. And yet, if we had the tools to help us develop as players, I wonder if that would have happened. I just don't want to see it happen again, but I am getting the feeling that Erez couldn't care less about onboarding for new players. It is starting to feel like empty promises. And lets face it, the Tribes community is old and crusty (no offense), so it needs new players who are willing to stick around and keep the game alive. To me, that is far more important than new maps or cosmetics etc.
From my own very introspective perspective, I don't think it will succeed. In fact, I think Erez has already given up on Tribes 3, he seems to be liking the idea of Honor Ball becoming the new Rocket League, and I fear that is his new focus. And truth be told, the idea of paying £18 for cobbled together asset flip, is quite frankly insulting. On the other hand, we have Midair 2. Which is a game that makes me feel sad, because I miss far too many shots because I still don't understand inheritance. And it feels really slow when you first start gaining speed. But at the same time, Midair 2 was made by passionate members of the community, whereas Tribes 3 just feels like a cheap and easy cash grab in the wake of a failed project. As much as I want to play Tribes 3, I have no faith in it, or HiRez. I would rather get spanked repeatedly in Midair 2, until I learn how to aim, before I will give Erez a penny of my money. And truth be told, I think he has already abandoned Tribes 3, now that he thinks Honor Ball will make him some nice easy money. Honor Ball will never be Rocket League, I just wish I could see the look on Erez's face when he figures that out.
@@hyped5958 That isn't the point, or at least my point. I can afford the game, easily, I earn more than enough to cover the cost. The issue I have, is my time, as it is far more valuable. Should I give Erez some money, and play the game he seems to not care about? Or should I spend my time and money on a dev team that DO care (as in, the Midair 2 devs). I guess it is a case of take your pick, choose your poison etc. I am seriously doubting Erez right now. I genuinely do not believe he cares about the future of this game. He has already moved on, to his new Honour Ball project. So I guess, time will tell. In the meantime, I wont be paying him for an asset flip. I would rather give the money to the Midair 2 devs, they seem like the real deal, but more importantly, they have the ability to choose their own path, and make their own game. For better or worse, I would actually trust them more than I will ever trust Erez as a project leader.
If you have a game that you love, thats great. But midair will never have players, and it isnt likely to ever develop radically more than it already has. T3 is already great, its cheap, its here, and even if it only lasts a few months, we can enjoy it while it lasts.@@zalamael
Agreed, Erez has given up. He told himself that difficulty is what killed T:A, not his pay to win model, then he began saying the same thing about T3. He could listen to valuable feedback and make the necessary changes, but instead spends his time banning anything outside of blind praise from his discord. Stellar decisions all around.
It's pretty simple. To be a successful Tribes game it needs vehicles, private/dedicated servers, mods, user made maps (which aren't absolutely tiny), and spectator mode/recordings. Client side scripting would be amazing. These things are incompatible with Hirez-people developed games which depend on pump and dump microtransactions and servers run by the company. The cost of company run servers mean the game either dies or becomes unbalanced because of pump-and-dump.
So why isn't T2 more popular? It has all of these things (and is now free). I don't mean this in a reductive way, I do however, challenge the notion that simply replicating old tribes will be successful in 2024.
It will not succeed it has poor balance, lack of depth, lack of discernible direction, lack of features and systems. There are too many better alternatives.

11yrs old? Which one was your first? STAR SEIGE ALL THE WAY.
T1. I'm 35 now. We old.
$18 is the price of a movie and popcorn at the theater that gives you 2 hours of entertainment. That's nothing if you play this game for a few hours
@@omgitsfishstix Because people don't care about old things. I really do think T1 given a modern graphics look would be successful in 2024.
It will not succeed it has poor balance, lack of depth, lack of discernible direction, lack of features and systems. There are too many better alternatives.
No.
cant wait for this "game" to bomb
Go be useless somewhere else
You must be fun at parties
I truly hope that you find joy, peace, and the ability to love yourself someday.
