    I went to a public school untill 7th grade when the teacher kept causing me anxiety so I switched to online school now I've been going to a charter school for about a month and the teachers seem a lot happier than in public school

    In our area, our charter school has a much more involved and well funded arm that helps students with disabilities and learning challenges. Our son has benefitted greatly from this. Every charter is different, but when it comes to addressing neurodivergent students- our charter has been a godsend.
    Also the curriculum is more focused on an areas he’s super excited about: Math and science.

    Love the illustrated format. We need videos like this. Did you do it yourself? Or hire someone? Didn't hear anything about a 4-day school week. Our Charter Schools have moved to a 4-day school week. What are your thoughts on a 4-day school week?

    • @IllustratetoEducate
      @IllustratetoEducate  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I created this video myself from scratch. Just a white board, markers, iphone and a computer.
      I think a 4-day school week can work depending on how efficient and effective the teaching is at the school. The typical public school or charter school most likely could not, but I know there are some exceptional schools out there that could pull it off with great results!

  • @northmeister
    @northmeister 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Charter or Public? I prefer one public school system but I also know the results today due to the way they are run and what they emphasize. Some politics have entered in as well outside the universal principles we believe in or we were founded on. That said I like the idea of charter schools. Public Vouchers to every parent for each child to allow them to send their child to a Charter, a Public, or a Parochial type school should be what we follow federally. In each state the focus should be on looking at the best schools in the world like Japan or Germany or old models that produced great results ie. the Prussian School System and putting together a great system to teach our children the basics, their heritage and principles of our nation, as well as respect and character.

    ...except that charter schools often require essays for admission and do not serve all students with disabilities. Charter schools have boards that are not elected and are not always in the same state. District oversight tends to be lax. Charter schools also have a higher proportion of un-credentialed teachers. Otherwise, great video!

      The problem is that is not true. Charter schools actually generally have lower proficiency. It is just about anytime at least here in America. The government privatizes something, the quality goes down. While costs go through the roof. That is just like any business, they are in it to make money. So most try to spend as little as possible, while charging as much as possible. Privatized prisons are a case in point. They cost the tax payers way more than state-run facilities. The inmates are basically used as slave labor. And the revenues mostly go to the management, and not to those who produce it. I don't see this changing as long as the one percent owns the government.

    • @ogndg0889

      GnSt4vo From some comments I’ve read on another videos, some people apparently think that because a charter school is opening it means that they’re tax dollars are going to go to the charter school. Then, because their public schools closed down, they say that they would have no choice but to pay for their kids to go to the charter schools after “being robbed of their tax money.” Which this video explains how they’re actually funded. Others also apparently think that it’s political and a way for those who are funding a school to take money from a public school, invest some into the charter school, and keep money for themselves. However, charter schools start with a set budget and yes in a sense it CAN take money from a public school, but only if the parents choose to to enroll their children to a charter school because public schools are given money per student they have. It creates competition basically, which isn’t really that evil. It’s like Walgreens and CVS always built across the street from one another.

      emtmama02 charter schools are better

  • @kiwifruitkl
    @kiwifruitkl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Public schools are government-funded. Charter schools are also government-funded, maybe receiving a bit less in funds, but also receiving some donation money.
    Public schools are government-run? Is the superintendent a government employee? Charter schools are privately run by a charter.
    So, the only difference is how the school is actually run.
    What does this have to do with performance in any way?
    The type of school is the independent variable. The academic performance is the dependent variable.
    And people conclude that the type of school causes a better academic performance, and that if parents have more school choice, then they would vote for charter schools. Competition is good. We need more competition.
    I think there must be a lot of confounding variables.
    We have to keep in mind that a lot of skilled immigrant families do move out of shitty school districts and buy a house in the nicer part of town and send the kids there. The public school is well-funded. The teachers are handsomely paid. The students are well-behaved. High graduation rate. Extremely low teen pregnancy rate. Of course, these public schools are quite exclusive because the neighborhoods are so exclusive, and you need to buy your way into the neighborhood. Charter schools offer the opportunity to poorer families to send their kids to better schools.
    Either way, that's not helping the public schools themselves. How is this helping public schools? What are struggling public schools supposed to do? Are they supposed to lose out to competition? To charter schools and private schools and home schools and more affluent public schools? What about the students in the struggling public schools? Why are we even treating the public education system like a business? This is the public school system we are talking about! It is supposed to be a public service!
    We need to improve our struggling public schools, and that's hard to do apparently, because no one gives a shit about poor people. And privileged people will always find a way to maintain their own privilege.

  • @arnoldolorenzo3474
    @arnoldolorenzo3474 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is skewed to make charter schools more “innocent” than they actually are. Funding: they get the same funding as public schools and in fact take the funds that a public school would get. In most school districts, funding flowed the student. This includes funds for ELLs (
    English Language Learners), low economic/ lower income (ex Title I funds) and other funding sources. They siphon off the most talented students from the public school system and then taught their great performance. It’s an unlevel playing field set up to make charter schools artificially and superficially have better performance. But if you look at progress, public schools are outperforming charter schools continuously.

      🤣😂🤣😂 based of what zip code?

    • @IllustratetoEducate
      @IllustratetoEducate  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t see the problem with funding for charter schools. From the ones I’ve worked in, they’re much more underfunded than public schools. And when I worked in a public school, i never heard - “oh, if it weren’t for the charter school down the street, we would have had so much more funding for our ELL students or Title I”.
      In places like Utah where schools are overly crowded with 30-40 kids in a class, charter schools help to reduce class sizes. From my personal experience, most charter schools struggle to perform well and most end up not working out well. Usually bad management and failed programs.
      And with taking the “talented students”- like the corporate world, everything needs a little competition to light a fire to make consistent improvements and innovate, including our public education and their schools.

      Charter schools typically perform better and have more leeway on what they are allowed to teach and how to teach it. They are still required to cover certain topics and students are expected to know certain information for exams, but so long as those are met, they can do what they want. Public schools are failing in America and it's honestly time to at least try a different system.

    One of the reasons I want to change to public school for high school next year is the charter school is grossly underfunded and use almost all the money they make to expand which is annoying because the teachers get paid less and the teachers equipment and students equipment is little to non existitent they assume that the student will buy stuff that should be provided by the school footballs soccer balls etc it's kinda annoying
    Also there's a lot of racist kids there kinda not the schools fault it's probably because it's a very conservative school

      One thing I am learning is some charter schools are terrible and others are great. And I am not against all private schools. We have several religious schools where I live. And I have nothing but respect for them. But I also need to look into how they are funded. Maybe I am totally wrong about Charter schools.

    This information is incorrect. Charter schools do not follow the same rules as public schools and not all teachers are certified by their respective state to teach. Texas is such a state that does not require charter school teachers to be certified by the state of Texas. Charter schools also take away money from public school districts in the form of vouchers. Charter schools also have a tendency to enrol students until a certain time period has passed, so they can receive funds from the state. After this time period they can drop a student from enrolment and send them back to public school.

    • @IllustratetoEducate
      @IllustratetoEducate  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This information is correct. Of course there are anomalies, especially in Texas. Texas even has its own standards. I know because I taught as a certified teacher in Texas. But for the majority of the United States, this is correct information. Please refer to your state’s department of education for specific information about rules and regulations that a charter school must follow in your particular state. Thank you.

      @@IllustratetoEducate
      Charters take tax dollars from neighborhood schools. Charters receive state tax dollars even if they are operated by private, for-profit management organizations. Every tax dollar an open enrollment charter receives is a state tax dollar taken away from an under-funded, neighborhood public school.
      Charters Lack Accountability and Transparency. Charters are not governed by a publicly elected board, but by private individuals with little to no accountability to the parents and students. Therefore, the community, parents and students have no meeting place to air grievances or have a direct impact on how a charter school operates, unlike in a public school system.
      Charter academic performance lags behind neighborhood public schools, according to TEA data from 2012-2016.
      Charters in Texas had a dropout rate three and one-half times that of neighborhood public schools. Charters had a four-year graduation rate of 59.9 percent, compared to 90.8 percent for public school districts. Students from regular public schools did better than charter students on STAAR and had higher ACT and SAT scores, except for one exam, during that period.
      Charter college success is exaggerated. IDEA falsely claims that 100 percent of its graduating seniors each year are accepted at a college or university, but many IDEA graduates who enter college never graduate or don’t graduate on time. According to the most recent data from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, only 41 percent of IDEA graduates who completed high school in 2010 enrolled continuously for four years in college. This “persistence” record was significantly lower than the 69 percent of all 2010 high school graduates in Texas.Schools like IDEA do not provide these students the education and preparation they need to stick with college once they get there.
      Charters are exempt from basic teacher protections. Charters are exempted from most of the teacher certification, contractual and training requirements of Chapter 21 of the Texas Education Code, including the grievance procedure, the minimum salary schedule, the 45-minute a day planning and preparation time, the 30-minute duty free lunch, staff development requirements and the requirement that districts provide resources for teachers of students with special needs. State certification requirements do apply to special education and bilingual/ESL teachers in charter schools.
      Charters have no class size limits. Charters are exempt from the 22-1 class size limit for grades K-4, and many have more crowded classrooms than neighborhood public schools.
      Most charters have selective admissions. Unlike neighborhood public schools, which admit all children who live in their attendance zones, charters can cherry-pick. Some use lotteries. Some don’t accept disabled children or cannot accommodate special needs students. Some, including IDEA, don’t accept children with serious disciplinary issues.
      Charters may not offer bus service or lunches. Charters don’t have to provide bus service or lunches.
      Charters aren’t always free. Some charters require parents to pay “activity fees,” which can make it difficult for low-income students to attend.

      @@n5sli I’m sure these statistics are true, but you’re generalizing it all to what’s happening in Texas. Texas is one of the only states that has its own unique education system, and superior to all other states might I add. I know because I taught in Texas in the public school system and it was FANTASTIC! But in other states, the same is not true. It’s all just a case by case basis. There are some fantastic charter schools and some awful charter schools. With the right implementation, it can help the public school system.

      Charter school students have to wear uniform. School made their own rules, time school starts, low amount of students attend. I go to charter school and I have to wear uniform and I have to follow the rules. My school starts at 9am and ends at 3:45pm. Also my school has only 151 high school students. A good thing is that you receive personal attention from the teachers and you mostly know everyone. (Sorry for my poor English. English is my second language😄). I hope this makes sense.
