Just got my first canister filter (a 207) and was having a hard time figuring out assembly from the printed instructions so this was a lifesaver, thank you!
I'm new to this type of filter. So please forgive me if I sou d dumb. With this filter, you no longer need the other ones that hang on the back of the tank. Is that correct?
No worries! Yes, you are right - hang on the back (HOB) or canister filters are both effective. Typically, canister filters like this are chosen so that the tank appearance is cleaner (less stuff on it). Amongst other benefits like being quieter, they allow you to more easily customize different media inside which can be great for specific setups and needs. Thanks for watching and keep asking questions! :)
Hi. Thanks Can an external canister be LEVEL with the aquarium? I can put it below but it's easier for me to have it level on the same shelf. I've always had them underneath before. 🇬🇧
Great question! This is a tough one to answer because the answer sits somewhere between “can you” and “should you”. I think generally speaking most people keep the canister below the tank just to keep it out of sight. That said, the below the tank will absolutely help with the priming/siphon that a canister needs to get started. Technically, if you get the siphon going in a canister once it starts up it will operate at the tank level. However, it’s likely that it won’t be quite as efficient. In short, if that’s what you have to do, it will probably be OK once you get it going. However, trying to keep it below the tank might be the best bet.
Im new to this type of filter as well but want to try it to get rid or the big bulky ones on the back of the tank and to avoid the build up that is sometimes on it. Are there any other videos on this type of filter so I can do more research? I like the way you guys explained this.
Hey! Sure, check out this video that walks through different filters. There’s another one on the channel that covers how to clean canister filters and another one that shows you how to properly set them up. We got you covered! th-cam.com/video/0YnwMGxf17o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xDgW7K3vR_UJ5DJt
Hey 👋 - you can get the “aquastop” assembly from Amazon which will replace that top section for less than $20. Otherwise you could try zip ties on the hose but that sounds a bit sketchy! 😬. Thanks for watching!
A canister filter like this is exactly what you would want for turtles but it does depend on the size of your tank. The flow demand for turtles can be higher than fish due to the amount of waste. Plan on a flow rate of 6-8x the gallons you have per hour. There are multiple sizes in this line of filters so you should have no trouble finding a match to your setup!
Here’s something to try: syphon water from the tank into a bucket during a water change and use that water to clean the filter media vs new tap water. You will still be able to remove debris and wash the material but the beneficial bacteria can be preserved.
Very helpful video. Some constructive criticism though at 1:46 good call out about the gasket. If you read any reviews on this filter and it leaks. Keep those tips up, but it would’ve been more helpful. If you guys zoomed in on you placing the gasket on. I only meant that’s the reason I put this video up. Wanted to make sure I did it correctly ha ha.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching! We have other videos on the channel on setting up media and cleaning. Hope you get a chance to check them out 👊
You don't need to fill it with water just open the valve (grey lever) and press the priming plunger three or four times and wait for it to fill. The outlet should be just above the water for priming. So all the air can easily expel. Once it's full you can turn on the filter. Wait a couple of minutes. You can then move the outlet under the water. You can just push the tubing through the rim holders to move the outlet down. You don't need to disassemble them. Also the grey rubber type connector on both the inlet and outlet should always be submerged. This is all in the manual by the way. You really should have gone through it before making an instructional video.
No doubt - but keep in mind that if you don’t fill it manually then the water to fill it will come from the tank. On a small set up, make sure you haven’t drained too much water during the cleaning process/water change such that the water that leaves the aquarium to fill the canister causes you problems (like draining too much while having live stock).
That’s definitely in there. I’ve made the mistake of turning a canister filter on without it, and you know very quickly if you forgot that part 🫣😁 This canister has been running under the tank for a long time now so we’re good, but you make a great point that it should be called out that people must make sure thats there!
It was my first time - the hardest parts I had trouble with are the gasket mentioned here, it was hidden in the box inside a warranty booklet. And I had trouble understanding the hoses attaching to the motorhead. The trick was that you put the hoses on, and then UNSCREW the red (binding) caps to seal them onto the hoses. This video helped but I did not use it at first ;P. I would not wish to elaborate further

Great to hear 😊. Who likes printed instructions anyway? 😆
Very straightforward and informative thank you!
Thanks - awesome to hear 🙌
When I do a water change I fill from the tank so there are no air locks before I switch the power on

How do I know which fluval I need? I have turtles and they dirty the water a lot. But my tank isn’t filled to the top, would this even work for me?

Thank you for sharing this , wanna know how to properly clean wash the filter with those bio media and filter pad without losing beneficial bacteria?

I use the water from the canister. Dump it into a bucket and scrub from there. Same idea of keeping the good bacteria

Can you explain a bit more about the gasket? They didn't show it and I feel like I'm missing the gasket in mine.

Thanks for the feedback! Appreciate you watching and chiming in to help others out 👏
Any suggestion on a newer type pump that would provide great bubbles for my 55 gallon?
The Sicce whale 350 or Fluval 307 would be great options!
@BRSfresh Thank you so much for your quick response. I just subscribed!!! I appreciate you all.

Could you provide a link for the tank used in this video? Thanks so much! Liked and subscribed!

5:05 my dude that is what the primer lever is for. No need to fill manually.

For anyone reading the comments. Don't forget the gasket. You'll get water everywhere if you don't.
Great point! The gasket should be in the grove here in the lid but yeah be sure that’s there - as you point out, you’ll definitely know if you don’t 😏
