What is "The Wai"?: Muay Thai Greeting & Sign of Respect

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 ธ.ค. 2017
  • The Wai is a gesture of respect; it's a way to say hello, to apologize, or show honor to an instructor or gym. So the next time you're in Muay Thai class, be sure to bring your hands to your head and bow to your Kru, partner, and facility!

    Its generally a thing in asian culture to do stuff like this. But its a good thing to not limit such cultural things to one group of people

    • @benjaminchyau

      sjw's call this cultural appropriations...u must be offended by everything

    • @Mila_BK
      @Mila_BK 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      responses are the triggered ones lmao.
      It is common in Asian culture to bow to show respect, or as a greeting, but in specifically Thai culture you say sawaideekhrap or swaideekha along with it, and do it at specific times.

    • @choiettech
      @choiettech 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll be honest this style of bowing seems more specific to the Thai region. You won't find this specific one elsewhere in Asia.

  • @rooroo9216
    @rooroo9216 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've heard of similar things in Japan, the lower the bow the more respect/apologetic for whatever reason the situation is. It can even go as far as a bow right down to the ground too. Idk if this is a myth or not but it could've originated as a way to show respect without giving up one of your limbs (like with a handshake) so an assassin or enemy couldn't stab and kill you. I could be wrong though. Anyway cheers Shane (that's probably the only Thai I know as of now. I won't exactly be having any amazing inspiring conversations any time soon, lol). I hope you had a fantastic Christmas, and I wish you all the best for the New year too!! :D

    I teach kickboxing at a local community center. My students and I bow with our hands as you said the lazy way. A way to show respect and honor to the art of Muay Thai Kickboxing. I would like to introduce more of the traditions of Muay Thai. My background is MMA. I have a few Amateur wins under my belt. I enjoy teaching and have the blessing and oppurtunity to teach what i enjoy. Though I do feel the since i have not competed in traditional Mauy thai i am unworthy to teach it. I watch plenty pf youtube videos for helpful tips ad instruction foe my classes. Agan this is something i enjoy and so do my students. Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you soon.
