I like the Retron HD, but colors are definitely off via hdmi. A few of my homebrew carts dont play, Haunted Halloween 86 does not play. But man that controller is awesome. $40 Is a fair price i say despite some of the cons.
oldgraphics His video looks very similar to what i have for the Retron. Now, i dont think its bad but if you compare to the AVS or Analogue of course theres gonna be a huge difference. The price of the AVS you can buy 5 of the Retron. Id be perfectly happy with the Retron, if it played all of my repros and homebrews.

I am a very firm believer of the school of thought that the correct way to play games is the way YOU THE PLAYER ENJOY IT!! Play on a rasberry pie, an original NES, a smart phone. Dust off your Atari ,Play in a web browser, Slap on a VR headset and fire up a PS4 pro whatever you enjoy doing! In the end all that matters is you have fun since that is the whole point of playing in the first place. As for the product it is a major bummer with out Flashcart support but other than that for $40 looks pretty damned decent to me. I am seriously considering one of these my self.
Hey Shawn, good review brother. I have been playing mine extensively for three weeks now and I can safely say there is a color issue with every game that I played. Some games it is very slight, others like the Wrestlemania Challenge you pointed out, are way off. My main issue with the console so far is that some games are freezing deep into later levels. This happened with Castlevainia in the 5th level multiple times, Mario 2 in the 3rd World twice, Tecmo Super Bowl froze a few times. These same issues are not occurring with my Retro Bit clone NES, as I am using the same cartridges. That being said, the controller is comfortable, feels like an upgraded NES controller and the cord is super long. The black system looks great in my living room, which allows me to keep it in there without my wife saying something about it. I didn't notice any lag that affected gameplay. The picture is also very clear. And lastly I'm not sure how many people have tested this, but you can actually have the system hooked up to a HDTV and CRT TV at the same time and play the game on both screens. Oddly enough the colors are not messed up when displayed on the CRT TV.

I like how the darks are nice and dark and lights are bright. The colors are slightly off though in most of the games. Doesn't look like too big of a deal. For 40 bucks looks worth it to me.
You didn't talk about the pins. That was my major issue with the retron 5. It would almost have a death grip on your games, and sometimes the pins get damaged and misaligned. Can you talk further about how the carts feel when you insert and eject them? I hope it still doesn't make that crunch sound. Let us know in your follow up.

Quadralords is a clone of Warlords on the Atari 2600 and arcade. I never played it on the 2600, but actually discovered it on the Atari Anniversary collection on the Dreamcast. Its still really fun and a really overlooked classic IMO.
I bought Retron HD a week ago and I love it. The only problem i have is that the color is off a little playing Tecmo Superbowl. It's just weird when your kicker kicks the color corrects itself for a frame.
If you play Splatterhouse all the way through you will understand the concept of the over the top Michel Jackson scene at the start :) well worth finishing this game.
While the AVS is definitely the way to go, he did specifically say this was on the budget/lower end price wise. The AVS is nearly 5 times the price of this system so it's a different market really.

I'm not knocking Pi, I have one and it's kinda cool but I'm old and enjoy playing carts too. I love my Retron HD. Paid 27 British pounds for it and I get a lot of fun from the system. I've bought it and played the following games; Contra, Pebble Beach Golf, Maniac Mansion, TMNT 2, Friday the 13th, Ninja Gaiden 2 and Wrestlemania funny enough. So far everything has played really well. I had to clean Friday the 13th and it did crash after my first counselor died. I don't know if it was still dirty or what. It was playing fine up until then. I'll try more games to see if it continues to work great and Also try my Game Genie on it.

Okay so out of the hundred or so NES games I have, 8 didn't work at all. They were Blaster Master, Bubble Bobble, Dig Dug 2, Dr. Chaos, Dragon Warrior, Guardian Legend, Iron Tank, and Ninja Gaiden. Other games like Krion Conquest had graphical issues during the intro but played fine. A bit of a mixed bag, I feel. Controller's great though.
I've got the same kind of annoyance with people always bringing the "my Raspberry can do the same even better" every time we talk about "retro systems". I'm getting tired of explaining why it can also be cool to play on a nice dedicated thing

Colors look better using composite output rather than HDMI on the RetroN 1 HD. Gamerztek system is nice but no 4:3 and carts are a pain to remove. Removing games on the Hyperkin are done very easily.

Also I've heard conflicting reports for the Everdrive N8, some say that it works and others say that it doesn't. Apparently the one that they used to test with did work, so I'm hoping that my copy will work with the Retron HD. If not, I'll just play my games the normal way so no big deal for me anyway. I look forward to your side-by-side review of this and the 8-Bit HD rev. 2.
Million dollar question: how does it perform while runing games through the composite cables to a non HD tv? Could this be the poor man's solution to an A/V moded top loader? I've heard the HD upscaler is the problem with this unit and would love to see a side by side comparison of HDMI vs Composit out to see if it has truer color and sound when it's not upscaling to HD...just a suggestion

Sound issues right into Journey to Silius. There's audio issues in the main lead melody. It doesn't sound right. It sounds almost PSG-like. And that's a deal breaker for me. Even Castlevania III has sound issues. Yeah, I can't, sadly...

Hmmm. John Hancock did a review of it and the music was way off. I thought it was the retron hd but maybe it was the 8bit. either way, the audio was horribly incorrect, Like atgames sega genesis off. I love my AVS, but i rralize not everyone will want to spend that amount or more. Update: He did do the Retron HD. The audio was really bad. Like playing a detuned guitar backwards lol. Did they send out a bad batch or something? I couldn't really hear any game music to tell on yours.

Wrestlemania challenge was not compatible with the original retron from hyperkin either, which I found strange
Castlevania 3s colors are muted, not terribly muted but its darker than it should be, but yes it runs as it should.

I just got my Retron HD in the mail today, and I really like it. It's way better than the Gamerz Tek 8 bit HD. This is just my personal opinion.

Most hardware clone systems do, but I can't guarantee for this one.
Try using a nes advantage controller on the Retron HD, cause my NES advantage doesn't work on my setup.

the colors! look messed up, the image quality looks soft like its just the composite signal going into HDMI- otherwise seems ok for the price
