    Pewdiepie went from the first TH-camr to hit 1M subs (before MrBeast surpassed the numbers) who happened to have a beef with Barrels as his arch-nemesis, to a fast learner who improves his artistry each day. Even if the king puts down his crown, he seems happy on what he's enjoying right now.

      Depends on what you’re trying to achieve honestly, obviously having fun is top priority as an artist but if you want to improve quicker, you’ll have to be consistent with your practice.
      I tried relying on motivation alone for a long time and i can end up not drawing for months and felt horrible about it

    • @RusPitman
      @RusPitman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I dunno, if your goal is to improve then drawing only when you feel like it could end in stagnation.
      I prefer the “only draw for 5 - 10 minutes” technique. Just tell yourself that it doesn’t have to be good but you just need to get something out. If after the time limit you still aren’t in the mood then you can stop. But a lot of the time you’ll find that you can keep going as you’ll find inspiration as you work.

It was known back then with his OG community that he has a nack for art and overall graphic design already l. Tracing actually works well for very early studies if you struggle with stiff hand syndrome, ie: your drawings are to stiff. This can also help with understanding how to draw and how artists actually draw. However, it doesnt replace fundamentals, and loose sketching excercises which help loosen your artwork more. Initially it helps your brain develop nueral pathways of learning how to draw, after that youre supposed to switch to copying. So tracing does help, but its an beginner method and not to reproduce art, like you said. Friends please let us not be cringe, dont copy art; Use tracing as a learning tool only.

      When I was in middle school, I used to trace drawings from comics and how to draw books, ink over them, then go over it again in pencil to try to trace the basic structural forms they used to build the figure. It helped me a ton! Tracing is definitely helpful when done correctly.

Ive been drawing my little doodles and imaginary worlda since I was a kid, but never really wanted to "get better" or "study" until I turned 11 and *reeeeeeally* wanted to draw my favourite characters. Copying them from screenshots is what made my brain click and go "oh thats how you figure it out... okay..."

    Here's the thing with fundamentals - not everyone can learn them! Everyone thinks they're the ultimate basics but for someone who is colour blind and has serious problems with depth perception they're absolutely the biggest struggle to even get working regardless no matter how many books, tutorials, art & graphic design classes I've done these two things limit my ablity to replicate these 'basic fundamentals'. Has it stopped me doing art though? No. Not in 30 years of doing it. Sometimes you just have to work with what you have and work around the disadvantages your delt with.

  • @Nonn0n

    I started by drawing horses and one thing i remember from the book was that it started with a lot of the fundamentals. Like it had me do the shapes then added muscles. The design part was for the mane and extra. It was an odd choice but it made it easier to learn how to draw people. I appreciate the tip about drawing other things first.

    I think my biggest issue is not having a clear goal, not having belief in myself and potential on the future, and trying to do everything at once to compensate for the feeling of fomo. I’d probably do a lot better if I had those things and focused on one thing for as you said 3 weeks to a month/ just finish the art course or art book already. Though its hard to accept where you are at and to go back and relearn something you thought you already had a grasp on.
    I really don’t wanna go back to relearning the torso and pelvis again, but if its required to draw a good body from different angles then fuck me I guess I have to. But first I gotta finish Bryce Kho’s course and by that means I gotta put away all the pdfs, the morpho and taco secret point character book series, and TomfoxDraws book. HAH I have way too much stimuli for a “lost goal.”

      What helped me with this is finding a little portfolio of different art stages i liked and choosing one stage to keep to when drawing.
      An example? Cute meme doodles. I started replicating the squash and stretch of the doodles without coloring or detailing, and gave me practice at stylization without details (fast practice that is allowed to look messy)

And youre not training your artistic eye unless youre actively looking at your surroundings that way. You can watch 100 movies and learn absolutely nothing about cinematography if you arent looking for that. Ofc youll always pick up some things unconsciously when youre consuming youre favourite media - but its not so impactful to make someone learn drawing from scratch 20 times faster

Not cause they older but more so they start with thinking how did this person to get to here. And a they actively have better plan for studying unlike many artist who started it when they were young. Kids start with not much of a plan(not all kids). As a kid it harder to think more structural when it comes to studying. So I get how he figure it out. I enjoy seeing that since it cool to see how someone got something you couldn’t previously.

    I remember one time probably earlier on in my drawing interest, i posted something in one of the forums. And I remember in the conversation I asked the person "is it better to just focus on one thing at a time or do it all at once?" And I remember the response being something along the lines of "youll have to learn it all anyway"
    None of that was exact wording of course, but I do remember it basically implying to work on it all instead of focusing on one thing at a time.
    In practicing weapons at the dojo, I feel like we never really focus on being good at 1 or 2 weapons. (Unless you work on it my h kore extensovely outside of class time) We use a small variety. And these are one hour classes a week. I still don't think I could do much more of anything effective with them. But i can remember patterns.
    It just feels like it makes sense to focus on one thing at a time, otherwise it just feels overwhelming, and at least for me I'm not sure that's how I learn best either.

    Pewdiepie’s progress was very impressive, but it’s also worth acknowledging that he’s at the beginner stage where almost any purposeful studying creates large jumps in skill. I attended a private school where we all had to learn classical drawing (from the statues etc) & music. Pretty much everyone can achieve a basic technical level of craft in art & music. In fact, some kids were very good at it but just had no interest, while others had to work harder but we super interested & traced comics after school & so forth.
    My point is that ultimately it’s your DETERMINATION that controls how good of an artist you become. Once you get to intermediate level, where you can draw & paint semi-realistically, will you keep pushing yourself? Will you learn color theory, lighting, complex compositions

    I’m gonna challenge your tracing remark just a TINY bit. About a year ago I got really stressed out about not improving and starting tracing certain parts of the body as well as objects. Obviously, I wouldn’t trace an ENTIRE image because, yeah, that’s stealing.
    HOWEVER, I didn’t just trace and call it a day. I would trace the shapes. For example, for fingers, I would make sure to still draw in the separate blocks of the fingers rather than just straight up tracing the whole hands. Same if I was doing a portrait of a friend. I would still draw in the guidelines of the face. Eventually, instead of JUST learning how to trace, I was memorizing where the shapes and guidelines were supposed to go. I also learned how to look at a reference WAY better. Now I NEVER trace and am improving way faster.
    So you’re right about tracing BUT there’s a way to use it to improve your mental library which most beginners don’t do.

      As an art student. No- tracing is literally the best method to get used to the controls of the pencil and remembering the shapes. It builds up muscle memory, and your fingers are more inclined to draw similarly after that.
      Students who had no knowledge or skills at drawing. Are more encouraged to trace at the start of the semester to get the full grasp on how to draw.
      But of course, this leads to side factors as well. Tracing methods are only meant for our own time and practice. And should not be posted or shared as an original piece.

    • @akirosensei
      @akirosensei 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@emelisa2008 No, when you trace without using your brain, you're just copying the picture and everything goes into short-term memory. But when you understand what you're doing by analyzing and breaking down the structure of the thing you're drawing, all of that will go into long-term memory.
      "Students who have no knowledge or skills in drawing are more encouraged to trace at the start of the semester." This is incredibly dumb. They should learn how to study, how to do the basic stuff, how to analyze.
      You can trace hundreds of times, but you can't beat the guy who spends the same amount of time as you but knows what he is doing.

      The advice you give makes sense. Why are you still a student? Now, saying that doesn't mean because I have "sensei" in my tag. I'm just telling you facts.
      Is that your profile picture drawn by you? Do you know you lack anatomy and light shading? Because you don't study the basics first, and that's why you won't get better. Now, hold up, I didn't say my profile picture was good; I still have a lot of things to learn, and I have a long way to go, step by step, from a strong basic knowledge to improve.
      Learn how to study, man. Take one object, then draw it from different angles and perspectives, you're kil*ing yourself man.

    • @akirosensei
      @akirosensei 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@emelisa2008 If you want to improve, then you should learn how to study, as I say. Tracing won't make you a better artist. Muscle memory? What's the point of that if the things you're doing are wrong? So you're saying that doing the right study technique won't help you improve your drawing skills?
      Tracing is only acceptable when you're doing animation because it's part of the job, or if you're not a real artist and you just draw for fun.
      And this will be the only time I mention your age. I know you're still young, so you should spend some time doing the basic stuff first before you move on.
      This isn't just my personal advice, as many professional artists give the same advice too.
      But if you don't agree with my advice, which isn't original, I used to be like you until my early 20s when I learned that everything must follow the basics. Mastering basic shapes and understanding lighting is crucial, isn't it? We all have to follow the rules.

It was honestly really inspiring that so many people were talking about his video, as it subconsciously helped me get motivated and some what proud as well. Just wish I would also start using colours slowly

    I've always been horrid at drawing by observing so I very much skipped this step in my art journey. But over the past few months I've been taking steps to actually learn art! Pewds journey is also quite inspiring for me as I'm picking up all the advice ppl r saying based on what he did

    Ok I’m probably going to get flack for this but I consider tracing to be an actually helpful tool, BUT only if you are tracing 3D models/off of images you own (like screenshots of a character in a video game you took) or otherwise have permission for AND properly disclose that you traced
    I say this because I have actually had improvement in my art from doing this (it actually helped me learn how to draw hands and dynamic poses as well) I’ve also had similar art improvements from using mlp bases back in the day: working with those made it so I was actually able to draw ponies by memory believe it or not
    The only tracing I do for a full image these days are when I’m trying to draw my FFXIV character due to how complex his horns are (his horns are absolutely annoying) by taking screenshots of him doing different things in game for the past 4 years now - and I have definitely seen my art improve in my non-traced art since then
    Tracing is not an evil thing - it’s a good learning tool if you do it right
    It’s only bad if you never draw outside of tracing and never disclose you traced

      @DrCranium 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’ll actually second this opinion: after all, rotoscoping in animation is basically “tracing a live-action movie frame by frame”, and was used even by Disney in their golden era animations (even though rather for “making the production cheaper and faster” reasons: those dance scenes are tricky both anatomically and perspective wise, after all - so they’ve shot needed footage, printed it out, and then gave it to the animation team)

    I know that in 2021-2022 I found an artist I really liked that drew/ animated mostly warrior cats things. I remember that I used their frames in thier animation as reference and I improved quite a lot when drawing cats! I haven’t drawn a cat ina while now and if I want to continue with that I can just go back. I also looked at the frames that they did to learn how they got the motion off their animations and I still do! It’s hard to do the same with any other artist tho. 😮‍💨

    Tracing's good if you're making a character sheet (such as a turnaround or expression sheet) if you'll be drawing someone else's character. That way the look and movement is consistent.

Pewdiepie actually inspired me to get serious about it and also stop my youtube addiction. He's a new dad and while retired still put in time to draw when he could so now i just go on pin and redraw manga panels faces and have seen improvements along with guitar progress which is fun

    We can scoff at beginner artists just copying drawings from comics and cartoons and not making anything original, but that naive instinct to copy is actually extremely powerful. Don Bluth got a job at Disney because he spent all of his free time after working long hours on his family’s farm just copying Disney comic books. That was the thing that made life bearable for him, and it paid off IMMENSELY.

    I think people just kinda trace wrong? It can definitely be a good learning tool, but not if you just copy source line by line.
    I do tracing a couple of times as an exercise, but instead of just blindly copying the original art, I've tried to break it down and was constantly analyzing it's structure and volume, in a "what I _do not_ do that makes my art style look different from this one?". In the end my traces look more like concepts and blocking shapes you are _starting_ from.

    My theory about his improvement is this it’s just that he’s really happy as a person who is not optimistic, proud or even positive I find myself struggling to draw anything I think it’s because I am an unhappy person. That is my belief that since PewDiePie has made it to the top he has a kid he’s rich he’s famous. He’s won the world is full of optimism so when he draws, he succeeds amazingly.

    • @salt3685
      @salt3685 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Kind of an odd take, but I think I sort of get where you’re going with this. Rather than saying because he’s happy he can improve and because you’re sad you can’t though, I think it’s more than when you’re in a happy and positive headspace you have more energy to be determined and to keep practicing even when you fail, versus when you’re already depressed you have much less energy and/or determination to follow through with the things you want to do. Happy people can be bad at art and sad people can be good at it, hell most artists are depressed as hell lol, it more so depends on your personal mindset and work ethic; something depressed folks often struggle to find for themselves. That said, it’s also not something you might necessarily be the best at just because you’re happy either, so while I get the correlation, I can’t fully agree that it’s the entire causation or explanation.

    The actual secret is 'the Chommang method' Day 7 and I drew better than I ever did better than my groups 'lead artist' and and now practicing w/ them. Teaching a friend how to draw in the process. I wouldn't say I'm as good as PewDiePie but I definitely got decent at the method. Every detail mattered in this method I used to draw wide eyed monkeys at day 2 when I geared PewDiePie mention at day 4 I figured out my mistakes and drew decent (front face of any person). Today day7 I mixed this method w/ another more popular method by dlas w/ the shape of the face & hair w/ his method and the actual face w/ Chommang I now had the ability to create any face shape I wanted (front face). Up next is side profile aka today

    i think its so funny how some other artists are getting so mad and/or defeated over this, like. literally all pewdiepie knows how to draw well is cute anime girl in a 3/4 bust view. because thats what he focused on. yeah he got really good at that one thing, but he still has a long way to go if he wants to have variety in his skill set. you can still plainly see how his lines arent yet 100% confident when sketching and his colors are all over the place. he’s just proof that anyone can learn to draw even as an adult. especially as an adult. i think this is a good message, not a defeatist one.

    Yeah I am pretty sure that he has drawn stuff before but probably stopped for a long time before picking it back up again so I am doubtful that he is a total noob. This is not to downplay his progress at all because it is his proper approach to drawing that allowed him to progress this quickly.
    Although I think in his place, I would approach studying perspective and doing studies from real life reference material instead of any artist before I draw anime characters to build a solid foundation.
    Occasionally though , it is good looking at artist for inspiration or to take or should I say steal* their techniques to improve my painting skills.

    Step 1.) Disregard that Pewdiepie had prior art experience.
    Step 2.) Go draw.
    Step 3.) Think about what you drew, what you think was good (even a line that is less wobbly than another) and what wasn't.
    Step 4.) Go to Step 2 while reinforcing the good as much as you can.

    100 days is plenty of time to improve in something, especially if you already have the fundamentals. I learned animation very quickly by just being able to have a clear goal and finding tutorials for specific things I struggled with. A lot of social media artists have all these badly explained rules they follow and get in their own way. And, tbh, a lot of complaints I've seen about Pewdiepie reek of jealousy. That's another problem. The obsession with other artists' growth, instead of working on their own art.
