  • This is a short video for a product review of the "Solar Charger 10W Ultra Thin Silicon Solar Panel 5V USB Ports for Phone G8Z3" as seen on eBay. It looks to be a good product. I don't know if it puts out 10 watts of power, but the solar panel is light weight, yet fairly durable and it charged both my Google Nexus 7 tablet and my cell phone in a hazy overcast early morning sky. At about 13 United States dollars with shipping included, it looks to be a worthwhile buy. The only issue I had with the solar panel was putting the suction cup stems through the grommet holes as the suction cup stems seemed a bit over-sized for the holes. With some vegetable oil and twisting with a downward pressure , I eventually threaded the suction cup stems through the four grommet holes in each corner of the solar cell panel. www.ebay.com/it...

I have this exact same charger. And for those who are wondering, this is NOT a 10W charger (surprise, surprise!). In full California sun, it charges at anywhere from .4-.8A (depending on time of day), which translates to 2-4W. Much of the time, it won’t charge as fast as a wall charger. But it CAN come close to a typical 1A charger at times. And most of the time, it CAN provide sufficient current to VERY slowly charge your smartphone while you are actually using it.
Does this make this charger a bad deal? Not at all! Given its low price, it is actually well worth it. It also has other advantages compared to other solar chargers, such as being VERY lightweight. It weighs only 3 ounces, which makes it PERFECT for the weight conscious hiker or backpacker. Larger folding panels weigh LOTS more. Also, unlike folding panels, this panel has the advantage of not having bending wires which will eventually break.
So should you buy it? If you can live with the fact that it does NOT put out 10W, it is actually a pretty good panel.

I have 2 of these. Under full sun it puts out about 700mAh.
    Pretty good.

Mine was discharging my Samsung Galaxy J7 when I had it on a sunny windowsill. While it's outside, however... it seems like it's slowly trickle-charging it. Great little backup charger for camping or hiking.

Is the USB output a regulated 5v so that it doesn't supply under / over voltage?

I doubt it is regulated. Hopefully what you plug it into has some smart circuitry to control the charge rate. Some tablets and smart phones tell you for a faster charge use a bigger charger so they know the current coming in through the USB port.

5v 10w = 2A (?) it should charge pretty quick when in direct sun, how fast du it charge your phone comoared to a 5v 1A wall charger?

its not actually 10 watts, thats the marketing strategy they use

It's 4w. It puts out 700ma at full sunlight.

How long does it need for a full charge? This would be an essential info.

There are a lot of variables but at full sun and running at 10 watts the charger should be close to what a plug-in charger to a wall outlet does for smart phones and tablets. For laptops, I'd guess it would be slower going as those have bigger plug-in wall chargers. Those plug-in wall chargers usually have the wattage listed in very small print on them so use that as a guide for how long your particular device might take to charge. If your plug-in wall charger takes an hour to charge and it is rated for 5 watts then in full sun with the sun directly overhead and with your solar panel catching the sunlight dead-on, you'd be getting 10 watts out of it and it should only take 1/2 an hour to charge.

You use the word "should" a lot. No one cares if it "should be" but rather if "it is".

Aren't you supposed to put on the shoes and walk 3 miles before reaching the conclusion? Is it a junk or not?

I'd recommend it if you get away from the power grid for very long. The board the solar cells are encapsulated in, it looks and feels very durable, like you could drop it on a hard surface, edge wise, and it would survive. The blow molded plastic USB port housing glued to the back looks not as strong as the main panel, but strong enough. If you lived in Puerto Rico, or Haiti after one of those devastating hurricanes where the power grid is down for months, this solar panel would be ideal for that environment. Plenty of junk comes out of China. I just got several micro and SD flash card readers that can plug into my smart phone and the micro USB plugs are so loose a fit they drop out if I don't hold the phone in the horizontal, so I know personally it is hit and miss with many Chinese manufactured products. I feel confident in saying this product is not junk, unless, they have since cheapened up the manufacturing of it since my purchase. Someone once told me that in Detroit for every 3 cents they could save on the manufacturing of a car it was worth hiring an engineer to save those 3 cents. 3 cents goes along ways in China!

    What a USELESS REPORT.
All you here is “well it’s still charging”
It might be CHARGING at 10 milliwatts but it will never charge a decent sized battery.
As I have already said this IS USELSS.

    • @GregoryLog
      @GregoryLog  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Not like some software and hardware could not be added to smart devices to gauge how long it will take to charge its batteries. 10 watts might be a stretch, but the solar panel has plenty of surface area even if the efficiency is low, say 5 or 6 percent. Anyhow, it will charge a large battery if given enough time and the internal drain of the battery is less than the charge rate
