    You should also add a suitable diode inline to correct the voltage of modern batteries to the old mercury ones that were used

    Hi. Great video breaking down the repair. I was wondering how you can tell that the focusing knob is at the right position? Thanks:)

      @SoExpired  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +klodsen hey, basically you turn it all the way in one direction or another and then you put the knob in a respective position, either infinity or at the closest point.

      So Expired thanks a lot for the reply. I suspect that the focusing knob on my camera is misaligned so that the focusing plate doesn't have the full range of motion causing the camera not being able to focus all the way to 1 meter.

      What about infinity?

      So Expired seems to be alright. But I'm not entirely sure. I'll loosen the knob carefully and try to what you suggested.

    is that gold in there? some old tech used gold since it was cheaper?

    • @SoExpired
      @SoExpired  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not in this model. In Yashica MAT-124G they used gold for the contacts, therefore the "G". But it's a very thin coat and the camera costs a lot more than the golden parts.

      @@SoExpired The 124G at its end of sales in 1989 was priced new at $79.95. It is a cheaply built camera. If you buy it now, whether you pay $50 or $300, you are likely to end up paying repair costs in excess of its real value, which is at most about $125.

      @@SoExpired That's a bit hard to accept, as you have had to replace the specified 1.3 volt mercury battery with some form of 1.5 volt battery, and accuracy of the meter is dependent on battery voltage. Considering the hassle involved to open the camera, the solder of an appropriate voltage dropping diode into the meter circuit would have been almost no extra trouble. There is a certain satisfaction in having everything working on your camera, but considering the camera and the so-so usefulness of this metering when new, and the need to reskin now to correct an unskilled leatherette removal, I would have skipped the whole idea and used a modern hand meter. By the way, that sticky glue you need to reglue the leatherette is sold as "Pliobond".
