  • The original focusing screen on Yashica MAT-124 is very dim and doesn't have any assisting features, so I felt lucky and ordered a Chinese replacement with a split image center for about $20.

Mate this was an awsome video!
I bought the same plastic split image on ebay but couldn't figure out how to install it on my yashica 124 non g.
    This really helped me.

Hey! It looks like I installed it wrong side up. Please watch my next video where I did a test of the screen. Didn't have a chance to try installing it the other side up.

Just tried this on a 124G and it seems that: a) the original split screen on the G version is really good (traslucent), or b) it was already replaced at some time and the new I've got (seems exactly the same as the one on the video) is not better than the one on the camera. So, learning from this: try and compare both options (and pay attention to wich side goes up/down as explained on the follow up video from So Expired)

do you know what size screw driver you used?

This was almost the first medium format camera that I ever owned...if we don't count the ones that used 620 film.
The 1st was actually a Japanese knock-off called a BeautyCord - the focusing lens was not a duplicate of the taking lens, fixed shutter, no meter and about 4 F-stops. When I finally got the money, I shelled out the $105.00 and stepped up to the YashicaMat 124. I didn't even mind the dim focusing screen - I had arrived. I processed my first roll of Tri-X immediately and was impressed with the result.

When I was removing the original screen I discovered that there was a thick glass screen in the hood also. Does that stay in there?

How do you know size/thickness is correct? and doesnt need shim? brightscreen is HBV-size. For Kiev 60 it needs shim.

Does this replacement screen work with a regular yashica-mat camera?

Some bright spark should invent a better method of tlr focussing so it comes out right way up and not reversed.
2 mirrors would work, without a lens in front that reverses the image around.

For some TLRs you can buy a prism finder

I've purchased it from eBay, just search "Yashica mat focusing screen". I ended up putting the stock screen back as I've found, giving all its dullness, for me it still works better.

@@SoExpired Was this comment before or after you discovered you'd made a mistake with the original installation? Did you end up using the screen longer term? I'm just thinking about buying one of these at the moment and it's a choice between one of the cheap ones off eBay or a $80 one from a guy in the US who every says is good.
