I have the very same car (2008 335XI) and I now know that I can do my O2 sensors from the bottom of the car if needed in the future. I've worked on countless 335xi, u can cut the rear subframe bar that runs under the cat from side to side without any issues long term. I have done about 15 of these without any long term problems. 6yrs plus
Cool to see someone working on a platform I know disturbingly well unintentionally. Owning one of these has been awesome. Hasn’t seen an auto shop for anything other than alignment. Not for everyone but they are wildly fast for the money if you pick up a wrench, 200k is impressive. 2008 335xi here, I’ve also had the same Issue with opening the hood, go in the driver side cockpit, take out the plastic handle and expose the wire cable out of the groove, take wise grips and pull on the metal cable until it pops open
Drop the subframe. It's super easy and 8 bolts. Just support the engine. I made that mistake when replacing my water pump. Took 2 days. Dropped the subframe the next time, took 2 hours. Use a few long extensions to get the motor mount bolts from the top. Take both wheels off to assists in finding the bolts. 15mm. Oh and you'll probably need to replace the waterpump. They usually run about 50k. I have a 2010 335xi with 170k.
Yeah I don't get it. I just don't. Unless you're rich and can afford to replace them with brand new every 3 years I do not see why anyone would want one. They have NOTHING that other vehicles don't have, except high prices, expensive repairs, 100K in speciality tools that only work on certain models etc etc. I have no sympathy for BMW owners and frankly, sick of hearing them whine about all the issues when people know they are junk.
@@robsdeviceunknown you made me think of something. I bet BMW doesn't really want their cars to be repaired. A fixed car, doesn't sell new cars. They're disposable toys for the wealthy.

I've owned a 335i for the past 9 years, although the last two of those have been in my garage, untouched. It's sitting on 260,000km and was running fine when parked - well the engine light would come on under hard acceleration but don't they all... Good to see the car back on the channel, when the time comes my wife sure could use this as she is driving a 1999 yukon Denali we've had for 22 years and is very tired. She needs something smaller and a little more reliable for daily trips through the mountains to work!
On my e70 when the cable broke I used a coat hanger wire and slide it through the 3rd space on the pass side grill. Slide it between rubber seal and body. Press on latch in behind
That is exactly what happened with my 335xi. Me and my mechanic were replacing downpipes, and yes, we had to knock the bolts out, and of course, we damaged o2 sensors :)
I quit BMWs long ago with the E46 generation and am glad I did. Sam was defeated by this thing and had to walk away to work on less frustrating machines like... British and Italian cars. Think about that.

The mystery of the parked BMW fires is far from solved. In some cases, the vehicles have been so badly burned it was difficult to determine a cause, and in other cases, the fires were determined to have started elsewhere on the vehicle.
I had a similar hood latch problem on an Audi. Drivers side was stuck and passenger side did open. I used a 12" hacksaw blade poked it through the hood and managed to saw off the U shaped latch. Took a few hand bruising hours to cut through 6mm of steel but I got it done without damaging anything else but the latch. It wouldn't work I suppose if both latches were slammed shut but I got a bit lucky. Turns out the ball shaped head on one of the cables broke clean off.
