    I am surprised, You guys bring compost in. I was under the impression from Pauls other Videos (from L2Survive), that he only uses wood chips and some compost from the chickens. This is changing the BackToEden picture a bit/wood chip picture a bit. This looks almost like a no till approach, where compost is regularly added. Did Paul change/adapt his growing approach?

    • @GrowingBackToEden
      @GrowingBackToEden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a no till method. And the orchard had always been wood chips. In the film if people pay attention they would realize its compost that he gets and puts down... like there was a whole clip of him going to the place and buying a load of compost for his garden...

      @GrowingBackToEden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cut your grass down as short as possible then put cardboard then compost (as much as you can get) then a layer of chips on top of the compost. When you plant just move the chips aside and plant in the compost. The chips are just a mulch for the plants to help reduce weeds and needs to water as your garden soil gets established.... I hope that helps and congrats on the new acreage!

    From my experience wood chips are enough if you know what your doing. Compost is great if you want to add it every few years but i have never seen a huge difference in my garden by adding compost. Where I live we get 90 to a 100 degree weather all summer long. Without a good layer a wood chips in the vegetable garden I would have to water 3 times a day every day. I side dress my plants as they grow adding a little at time, until peak summer I leave it at 4 inches of chips.

    • @GrowingBackToEden
      @GrowingBackToEden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Flat Bastard a plant will grow fine and look fine in a crack in the sidewalk but does it have the nutrients it needs to reach its potential just in the crack with very little organic mater and soil diversity? Wood chips are no different. They have much more to offer than concrete but they don’t have the diversity of nutrients that a good quality compost has. It’s important to give the garden back the nutrients it takes out when you harvest stuff each year!

    Watching at 4:40 and am wondering, how paul keeps the grass out of the growing area. Is there some kind of a divider, or does the mulch do the job plus some regular "weeding"?

    • @GrowingBackToEden
      @GrowingBackToEden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yxcvmk he used railroad ties before he knew how bad they were. Simply edging the Garden with a weed whacked weekly will help maintain the edge as well and simple weeding when necessary

    • @GrowingBackToEden
      @GrowingBackToEden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yx5881 well common sense tells me that anything soaked in Creosote is “bad” for the soil and your health… shouldn’t matter whether or not I say it’s bad or if Paul says it’s ok… just do some research on your own and you can see that’s it’s not a good idea to use railroad ties soaked in creosote in a vegetable garden… hope that clears things up enough for ya.

    I will need to watch the videos again because I thought wood chips was all that you need in the garden. I also thought Paul had all the compost he needed from the chicken coop because he kept saying his fence was being buried from the waste in the coop. How do you know the bought compost is safe and why did Paul stress during his tours that his garden soil didn’t compress because it was from his coop. Now I’m confused!

As for the chips they cover the orchard a bud the garden is covered in composted chips/compost I posted a video about the different materials used in the gardens and orchard. People think they are understanding what Paul has done. But fail to realize. Paul was already an organic Gardener 17 years before he had his A HA! moment. The documentary was done years later after the chips had work further on his organic soil. You see many videos from people who think they did what Paul is doing, or done. Who say it does not work. They think I'll put down some chips. No more weeding. I'll put down some paper, some compost. Cover with chips. Then plant in the sorry soil they just covered up. Thinking. That is what Paul did. One step Paul fails to make clear is he uses chicken fertilizer for years. Then changed to composted cow manure to fertilize with. This method requires a lot of work to maintain. We are not in the Garden of Eden just yet.

    • @karenm5681
      @karenm5681 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robyn, there are no wood chips in this large rectangle part of the garden. Just layers of compost and sifted soil from the chicken yard. It is a thing of beauty. I've been there in person. The fresh layer of compost that they put on in this video does the same thing as the woodchips, but it's much easier to plant the tiny vegetable seeds in.
      The woodchips are in the orchard and the herb garden and the place where visitors park their cars and the walkways between Nicks' rows for growing the CSA food. Wish I lived close enough to buy into that CSA, but I'll be happy growing my own, learning whatever I can from these 2 amazing gardeners.

      Yeah, um, as a counterpoint to the religious angle.... gardening , even if you use a just bucket of dirt from the empty lot downtown, planting some herbs or vegetables, or whatever, this is a relaxing , chill thing. Just growing one thing on purpose, a flower, whatever, heals you on the inside in some way. Humans have got away from doing for themselves and we are paying the price. We were made to do this, it's in our deepest psyche, our minds. I have mental issues, and about things I done, this , just getting your hands covered in dirt, growing and caring for things...makes a difference. It will change you. For the better. Take it easy.... leave the life if you can.

      No it’s completely fine. Trust me. The soil is firm but far from compacted. People have no idea what the term compacted means and looks like in soil. They get IG confused with firm and think that firm soil is compacted when it’s actually great for growing in.

    I am so disappointed that I watched this video, compost that has been hauled in is the secret to the garden success instead of the wood chips? I feel duped.

      Poodle Daddles lol if you paid any attention to the film and to any of the other videos of Paul’s garden you would have seen it was fine compost. We plant in the orchard and have great success too though. I guess it’s normal or something though for people to just not pay any attention to the little stuff nowadays...

      @@GrowingBackToEden I watched and paid attention, like I said I have been duped, but I'm glad to find out the truth now.
