Oh what could have been... if only the various egos, greed and festering resentments had been set to one side. This could've been an incredible reunion instead it was a golden opportunity squandered.
It would have been much more interesting to see Jean Terrell with Diana in this event, but that was likely never going to happen, as these were the two major identifiable "Supremes Voices" -and often compared. Indeed, there were only two official lead singers of the Supremes: Diana Ross and Jean Terrell, both appointed by Berry Gordy. Jean remained as lead for nearly four years, fronting several hits and more than eight lps. When Jean left, the group suffered a major blow and record production ceased for almost two years. Mary worked hard to restaff and redesign the group as an ensemble act with herself and two or three singers very, very evenly sharing leads on all lps and performances. Mary highlights this fact in her book. Scherrie Payne was not a third lead and neither was anyone else. With Jean's departure the "unique Supremes voice" projected by her and Diana was gone, and the group sounded much more commonplace.
There were 9 Supremes not 8. Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, Barbara Martin, Cindy Birdsong, Jean Terrell, Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, Susaye Green.
Diana Ross, as usual, looks gorgeous, elegant and graceful here. IMO, her biggest mistake was not rebuking ALL of Mary Wilson's LIES spread during the negotiations. Doing so would have cleared up a lot of the drama still perpetuated by her envious haters.
