My american akita is (almost) the perfect dog. I have socialized him since he was a puppy and I take him with me most places. Although he doesn't like most other male (or dominant) dogs, he is able to coexist, this is his only qualm. He is an amazing natural guardian and has the best judge of character I've seen in any dog. He is wary of strangers, but celebrates when he sees people he knows and loves. He is calm and respectful. He doesn't bark unless there is a good reason and he isn't destructive when he's bored. He was also born potty trained. I am a professional dog trainer and animal behaviorist, I've never experienced this kind of bond with any other animal. He would die for me. All I can say is: socialize the akita, socialize it and you will be hard pressed to find a better companion. A little extra exercise never hurt either!

@@a.c.niyikiza8625 If you can find one with the right temperament and take the time to train them together, you might be able to make it work. But it only takes one fight to ruin a relationship with dogs like that, so be aware of that. Lead confidently and consistently and exercise as much as possible. I will also say that akitas definitely tend to get along better with the opposite sex. Best of luck to you, if you do decide to go that route!

@@k-9connections20 thank you for your help!
I obviously won’t be able to monitor them 24/7 because of work etc to keep them from fighting, I would have to learn practices to instill mutual respect in them between each other. I am jotting down that note about opposite sex relationships 👌🏾 thank you.
How would I be able to tell at 8 weeks old if my Akita has a good temperament when buying it from a breeder?

    • @k-9connections20
      @k-9connections20 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@a.c.niyikiza8625 Respect is the best way to handle any Akita, or dog for that matter! Calm, confident, love and respect.
It is absolutely possible to find an easier going akita that can get along with others. If possible try to meet the parents and observe their temperaments, puppies will often adopt the mothers temperament since she raises them, but this isn't always the case. I'm just giving you the general rule of thumb, so take it with a grain of salt. Also, watch how the littler interacts with each other. Puppies that try to control others may end up being dominant when they hit sexual maturity and perhaps even before that. Try to look for a puppy that is happy minding it's own business and isn't too fearful or too controlling.
It's true that akitas tend to prefer the opposite sex, it's a very common and accepted trait in the breed. My akita is a very dominant boy, but he does very well with his female partners and I can trust him to be left alone with them. I personally think they do better in male/female pairs, they thrive in each others company. Just some things to keep in mind when looking for an akita. They are amazing dogs, and every single one is an individual with different temperaments and needs. Best of luck to you in finding the right companion!

One of the best explanations of the breed's paradoxical traits and personality - big and tough but yet very emotionally sensitive like a kitten, gentle as a lamb in the home but ruthlessly efficient as a total bad ass hunter killer in the field, devoted but aloof, intelligent but disobedient - it is the complexities, contrasts and many layers to their personalities which make these dogs so damn addictive. Living with such a dog is like living with an alien intelligence or a sentient being as a room mate. They are very good at communicating what they want and excel at making you do their bidding but they are also the most loyal selfless and devoted breed bar none. They can be sniffing flowers one minute and killing a pack of coyotes the next - they are lethally violent yet excellent therapy dogs - they will play with other dogs when young yet they may try to kill the same dogs when they become sexually mature. They may tolerate pets they are raised with yet disembowel every racoon, squirrel and possum they can catch. These are like highly educated and sensitive samurai, self-aware, loyal and totally committed to total war if attacked, challenged or dishonored. They live by a their own code and they have a wild side which can never be fully domesticated or socialized or trained out of them. They learn what you want them to do very quickly but they may choose not to behave unless they feel like it at the moment. An Akita is more like a person at times than a dog because of their huge bold personalities - they literally are great company and they will call the shots if you let them just like a human roommate.

I raised an Akita-mute from 8 weeks old. Toughest dog to train. I almost gave up more than once. But now she's a gem! She's trained as service dog, sled dog, and guardian. She always reminds me that her primary duty is guardian, but she does her other jobs gladly like hauling my propane tanks in, and groceries.
I live on a homestead and I could not do without her.
She also is WONDERFUL with children intuitively. I would say if you have immense patience to initially train them, you will be rewarded. Very loyal and devoted. Feel safe anywhere I go with her.

My akita is 2 years old. I’m not a professional trainer, but I can get the connection easily with almost any dog. I wanted a dog, that’s a challange to me. Well, i found the perfect breed. 😀 it was month of training to teach her not react to dogs and people who are talking to us. (Now she’s walking next to me wonderfully). Looking back to the past 2 years and bond we managed to build with each other is just amazing. I know that i’m always going to have a dog next to me in my life, but I don’t think I ever want to try any different breed, altough it was a long and tiring road to have a reliable obidience. I’ve learn’t just as much from her, as she did from me.

Hi, my 6 month old american akita Freddie Kruger is just the most amazing pup ever. He is soooooo clever but is really stubborn as well. There are 2 rules he absolutely has to abide by, and does. !) He has to wait until I say he can eat, WITHOUT EXCEPTION and at anytime I can take away his food.
    2) He cannot go out of the door before me. He absolutely must not barge his way into or out of my space. definately a work in progress.
This dog is absolutely incredible. He keeps me on my toes every day. I have severe mental health problems and this little boy is already my saviour.

This is a spot on! Explains the Akita perfectly. One thing I'd also like to throw in there is that they are really lazy. I'm talking bulldog lazy. They have relaxing down to a fine art. They are up for walks/hikes daily but also more than happy to just sleep 23 hours a day. Hence some of the feline characteristics. Sleep, preen, sleep, eat, sleep, walk, sleep, patrol house, sleep, repeat. If you live in a colder climate these dogs are perfect 👌 Our girl is a furslug all summer but when the snow flies she is like a puppy again. Our girl is also great being left alone. No neurotic tendencies or destruction. She just sleeps while we are at work. Do your research before getting one because they aren't for everyone, but no dog has stolen my heart like this magnificent breed.

A decade ago when I first got him there were many people in my town walking around with large Staffordshire Bull terriers off lead. We got attacked several times when he was a puppy and it sent him aggressive. I worked with him and got a muzzle and was firm but fair. I soon got over the muzzle but I would never dream of letting him off the lead in a public place because I know how wrong it could go.

Akita owners for life. Yes, true and I plead Guilty. We have loved Akitas for over 30 years. In all that time, the house has never been free from Akita fur. That is just life with the Akita. They are naturally quiet and do not bark for fun. If your Akita barks, you best pay attention as there IS something going on. When we are outside in the yard (over 1 acre fenced) our dogs will most often, after making sure "everything is OK" will lay down about 20 feet away and turn their back to us and then watch the yard. Roughly 20 minutes or so, they will get up, walk over to us, check things out, make sure we are OK and get some pets and scratches then go back to watching to protect us. They ARE independent, they want to know "what is in it for them" when you try to train them or ask them to do something and if they don't see any value in it for them... it is not going to happen :D They are EXCELLENT dogs but they are not for everyone. DO NOT "spank" them when teaching the rules or for correction. A single slap of the fingers over the nose is more than enugh for them to understand. Once you have established a solid relationship with them, you can correct bad manners from across the room with a look. WONDERFUL dogs.. YES, for everyone.. NO! Do not get an Akita if you just want a love ball to fawn over and spoil with attention, that is not the kind of dog that an Akita is.

Firstly love ur vid. Our American Akita is 8.5 years and keeps us young, we are both in our 70.s. Like u said she is so protective if anybody walks past our home she lets us know. She dislikes small dogs because a jack Russel bit her when she was a pup and since then any dog that runs towards her is fair game, except I keep her restrained on her lead. Our favourite game is putting various snacks on the ground and watching her smell each one and then deciding what she wants. She misses all the affection because of covid and now if someone comes too near she stands in front of me and tries to push me backwards. We have twin grandchildren of 4.5 years and u should see her playing with them and loving the attention she gets and when she’s had enough she walks away. Our last two dogs were ridgebacks who were brilliant but our Akita is one in a million and she knows it.👍👍

He was bipolar like that. He’d be ok with children, then growl at them. He hated being man handled, like when my husband tried to get him away from the groundhog he just killed. He just grabbed his collar...not good, Max snapped and was vicious! But...he was the best, when my husband had to remove porcupine quills from his muzzle. Smartest, most loyal, protective dog I have known.

I was a first time owner with a rescued 3 year old Akita who had been abandoned and mistreated since birth. She was the ‘uncontrollable’ one in the rescue and had been there for two years.
Everybody warned me it was a terrible mistake however it was the best decision I ever made. She was not uncontrollable at all just required an established house hold where she knew her place but was welcomed with open arms and integrated into the family from day one in everything we ever did.
From day one she was superb, gave her the space she required to feel comfortable whilst establishing that it was my house and I can honestly say I would never have another breed. We had our first child when she was with us and she was brilliant with him too.
She suddenly passed away last year leaving me devastated and I will get another one again however it’s going to take some time and will most likely go for a puppy this time.

I've not owned a dog since I was very young, recently in my city where I live i have come across a dog rescue organisation that have a rescued 11month old akita, I'm really keen but not sure if trying to forge a companion like relationship with him at that age would be possible, he's a beautiful looking dog and he has caught my eye straightaway when I seen him

We’ve had our American Akita female for 2 weeks now - she’s beautiful and we adore her! The best channel I’ve found and the reason we chose the breed!
Contrary to belief she is actually very good with our 3 house cats - quite playful and the cats have to tell her off sometimes but mostly she smothers them with kisses

my 50/50 Akita-Pit is so AKITA! LOL!!!! Rottweiler lifelong owner but tired of all the illnesses with that breed, my last Rottie passed and this pup came into my life and I now have a Pit sized dog that looks like an Akita, but has that big pit heat and eyes. calm yet energetic, and a HUGE guardian, quietly watching till he feels something is wrong. EVERYTHING in this great video is so true about my bud- It has helped me decide that when I do lose my bud, A well-bred Akita puppy will follow me over my golden years will be in the future.

My second Akita always seemed strikingly gentile and docile when i compared her to my first Akita. So friendly and never aggressive to people or dogs.
Until the day we were approached by a stray german shepherd while on a walk. The shepherd had gotten out of her yard and walked up to her before i noticed, the shepherd then made the mistake of growling. My akita, Keeka, then growled, stood up on her hind legs and began swatting the Shepherd on the head like a cat swatting at a mouse, or perhaps like a bear trying to strike down a deer. The Shepherd then tried to run away, but Keeka got her by the tail and began dragging her down the street. I finally got them apart, and no one was hurt.

I have many years handling big breeds and am currently the happy owner of an American Bear (Akita). I would recommend watching the Fenrir Akita 101 video, everything I tell people is within that one video and is an excellent insight to owning (although I hate this terminology) an Akita. They are a beautiful and majestic dog, but are not suitable for most people, they need constant leadership and training but you have to keep them engaged, they will get bored quickly and also will never appreciate a heavy hand. Do not chose this amazing dog for the way it looks, they are work, everyday and take commitment, a sure way to get you, your family and the dog hurt is by selecting on looks and not researching the breed, they are fearless, loyal and an amazing companion to the right people, I could not be a day without mine, but know that this is down to all the work I have put in to making him feel safe. The comments are turned off on the 101 video so posted here as I felt compelled to draw attention to this video, I hope this finds a would be owner and you consider what is said.

Little story how my Akita Inu maybe saved my life. When Akiyama my Akita was approximately 2 year’s old i went like everyday at around 11:30 short before midnight on my last pee with him. We live near a big forest that has smack in the middle a old big building used for boy scout activities. When the house is not used for the boy scouts it’s rented to folks who mostly do small parties there like birthday parties and so on. That night when i entered the woods i immediately heard loud music and saw from far people standing around the house enjoying themselves. This is something i witnessed many times before. To see better in the dark forest i have always a flashlight with me. When i reached the building, Akiyama went deeper in to the woods to release himself. I waited and watched the people at the house. I saw two young man approaching me who asked me if i have a cigarette. I said friendly no and thought they will walk away. Than they asked if i could give them some coins. Again i said sorry folks im walking my dog and have nothing with me. Than before i could realize one of them started to grab me from behind while the other guy started to punch me and telling me to give him my wallet. I still hade my flashlight in hand and used it to hit the guy holding me from behind. Now there attack got more vicious, and both of them started to kick and box me in to submission. I panicked because they we’re quite strong, but still i was using my flashlight to give them painful blows. While doing so it came to my mind i could call Akiyama who was quite far away still doing his business. Maybe because the loud music he did not hear immediately my fight with the two young man. So while both still kicking and boxing me i screamed as loud as i could for my Dog. No one from the party folks intervened or tried to help. I hade to help myself. After i screamed Akiyama with all my might, i saw how finally he realized something is going on and came running towards me. Almost immediately Akiyama attacked the guy holding me from behind and started to bite him in the leg. The guy was utterly shocked because they did not realize my Dog was that big. Akiyama went berserk on him and he immediately stopped grabbing me and started to kick Akiyama. His friend tried to help him get rid of Akiyama who still was holding on his leg and wiggling left and right. With each wiggle the guy screamed loudly. When i saw both of them trying to kick Akiyama i took again my flashlight and started to hit as strong as i can on both of them to make them stop kicking Akiyama. While kicking Akiyama did let go one of them and attacked the other guy who was bitten in the arm and leg to. When they realized my flashlight and Akiyama is making there life’s miserable they took off running. At first Akiyama wanted to run after them but i was afraid they may stab him or something so i started to hold him back and leashed him. Maybe Akiyama saved my life this night. Later on i called the police at home and tried to find this two fellows but they we’re never found sadly. I still hope Akiyama was able to hurt them.

He is very accurate with this information about Akitas I had a American Akita which had puppies with my American pitbull which I kept a puppy from the litter and these dogs do have a hi prey Drive instinct they do have their own personalities you cannot bribe them with food to get them to do something they do not want to they will just stare at you if you tell them to move or get up when they're comfortable they would just lay there you can literally drag them and they will not move but they're very aggressive towards any threat and they love attention and affection from the family

If you raise your akita right you and your will read each other like a book. Super loyal and uber protective over owners. This said me and my husband both own rescue akita both come from bad conditions and extremely heavy handed prior owners. My husband is 37 but has owned akitas since 14 and can and trained his boy Kuma to high levels of obedience. They can walk in the rocky mountains with out a leash and won't chase deer or elk or wonder off but his dog is quick to watch and draw an attack on bears and cougars. My girl is almost there but zuri will wonder off and chase deer elk.

Many, many, many moons ago when I was a young women I went to a Schutzhund demonstration with my Akita. In those days it was extremely rare to see an Akita. I stayed there all day with my Akita Fuji watching them test German Shepherds and Dobermans and Rottweilers . I had socialized my Akita really well , I took him everywhere with me so he was use to all kinds of situations. All day he lay at my feet watching these dogs and people walk by me to be tested, and Fuji never showed any kind of aggression. Then the older Schutzhund trainer came up to and wanted to know if I would like to test my Akita on a sleeve because he had never had the opportunity to test an Akita in his 24 years of training dogs(they were still very rare then). So they had me tie him up with a dead ring collar to a heavy lead that was attached to a large spring board. At first the guy was going to have his man use a soft sleeve, but I spoke up because I knew how hard a bite these dogs have and I told him that I thought that would be a mistake, so he did listen to me and used a hard sleeve. He had me get positioned behind my dog and the man came up with the sleeve very aggressively and Fuji scared the wits out of everyone. He not only lunged at the guy with the sleeve but he ripped it off of his arm and spit it out immediately and went back for the guy full boar. The older trainer stopped his man immediately because he had never seen a dog, that had never saw a sleeve in his life react so ferociously . It scared the whole training club. All day not one of their dogs came on that hard. No one could believe that this dog that lay in front of my feet all day long as dogs and people passed right by him and never made a move until someone made a move toward me. The trainer came up to me and told me never to have him tested again and that he though that if he was not tied that he would have went for the man and took him totally down like a lion. Fuji my Akita knew that the sleeve protected the guy and he wanted his real flesh. He said he was more dog then I would ever need. I had known that all along because this dog was my constant companion and guardian and have seen him in many situations. He was by far the most incredible dog I have ever known. He could size up people and situations and do what was needed to end a bad situation. Once time he was lying in front of me at a party and some dude was bother me, and would not leave me alone. All of a sudden this guy then grabbed me by the shoulder to lift me off of the chair and Fuji came from a lying down position off the floor (with his head lying on the floor as well) sprung up so fast and hit this guy in the jaw with his mouth shut. It was so powerful a punch that it knocked the guy right on his ass and he got up backing off. He could not believe that this dog that never made a wrong move all day as people walked over him, just Punched him like a man would punch you. When he made a threatened move on me the dog came to life so fast no one had time to react until it was over . Both I and this dude and everyone else were thankful that Fuji only used his closed mouth to hit him. If he had used his jaws he would have taken the guys head off. Fuji use to punch my cats like this (only more gentle) when they would get in his food. They would fly across the floor unhurt but getting the hint. I could tell you many more incredible stories about this dog and his off spring . I had Akita's for over 30 years. I owe my life to them. I bred them as well, but only occasionally. I wanted a dog as a young women that was a true man stopper that could be socialize around people and be very stable. By socializing them really well they get to know an innocent pat on the back from someone who means it aggressively . You never have to teach them how to guard. They seem to get to know just how much force is needed. Akita's react to aggression, so any kind of aggression may kick in that guard instinct. If that dude had come back more aggressively instead of immediately submitting, that dog would have torn him to bits. My Akita's kept me safe through many adventure traveling all over this country by myself when I was a young good looking women. I am very old and gray now and miss my Akita's. Because of living in ranch country for many years at the latter part of my life, I switched over to another natural guard breed, the Tibetan Mastiff, which are another awesome dog that does not belong in the hands of many people. Powerful dogs are a big responsibility. It can be like owning a loaded gun. In the wrong hands they can be dangerous, but in the right hands they can save your life or your families, as well as being loving loyal pet. My dogs were not just pets to me, they were my protectors and I owe my life to them, and to God, for giving me earthly angels to keep me safe all of my life since I was a little girl. I was an adventurous, fearless young women, but I also realized that because of my out going and friendly personality that I needed a protector who was keeping an eye out for me, and I found the right combination. These kinds of dogs are not for people with a weak personality because you never want these dogs to become the boss.

And yes, no need to teach him ANY protection skills. He just knows this like a retriever just knows fetch! I like to say you don’t need to teach him to protect, you need to socialize him to NOT OVERPROTECT! Mine has chased off an actual bear but has also played very nicely w my sisters 2.2lb chihuahua! Socialization is KEY!!!

Asking for a friend 😅: What could be the best choise between owning a Presa Canario (again) or to go for something else, like Akita (American) what would you choose?

No similarities really, both good dogs but Akita is in its own league.

Is a Akita a good family dog with babies being involved?

I have 2. A male and a female. My female is alpha and constantly on the hunt. I've had many "gifts" from her. My female is my service dog that I also trained her to be a therapy dog. Both have been very socialized and love people. Unfortunately, they don't tolerate other dogs.

Could you answer this pls, i know that Akita’s aren’t good with other dogs but what if you were to get 2 brother akita puppies? Would they continue to get along or would they want to be dominant over one another?

You run the risk of them growing up and both wanting to be the Alpha of the animals in the home. Most ethical breeders would not encourage keeping 2 males their whole lives, even if they grew up together. It’s not impossible, but it’s running a risk. A boy and a girl will be much more manageable.
