Indeed. She is awesome, especially for those of us who haven't the money nor insurance to see a dermatologist. Her professional advice is priceless! It gives me hope that there are still doctors and other professionals who's true incentive of getting into the medical field is to better the health and lives of people. You should really subscribe to her, I have!

Deborah Mac totally. I’ve been to two derms in my life thus far and both answered my questions by mostly just referring me to products they sell at their office. Not sure why it’s so hard to answer questions such as ‘what products should I be using and what kinds should I avoid’..

I had a lengthy discussion with my father in law (dermatologist), and we kind of hashed out a routine. I can’t use adapalene for acne, but I have found some success with the use of a glycolic acid toner. I wash and moisturize /sunscreen my face in the morning. Once I’m home for the day, I do the nighttime skincare early in the evening. I workout, then shower. Wash my face, the use the acid toner. I don’t moisturize until I go to bed a couple hours later. This gives the toner a couple hours to do some work. It’s not ideal, but it’s basically how I’ve been controlling the acne. Thanks for all of the info. ❤️❤️❤️

My skin has been greatly improved since watching your amazing videos. I am age 68 and wasn’t aware that I was over exfoliating. I have gone to a basic skincare program. I have an oily t zone, and and some persistent acne bumps on my cheeks and forehead. I don’t wear makeup. I wash my face 1x per day in the shower, alternating with a Neutrogena Salicylic wash with the Neutrogena Hydrogel wash. I use the Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Cream as well as the eye cream. I recently added the Alpha Skin Care 10% Glycolic Essential Lotion. I have been using this for about 2 weeks and I use this every other day. I am going through a mild purge with this, but my skin texture is greatly improved. Every day my skin is clearer and smoother. I am also going through some recent chest acne, which may be hormonal. I am using the Alpha Skincare Glycolic on my chest as well. I have been alternating this every other day on my chest because my skin there is pretty angry, but it appears this purge is needed. I top this with Vanicream. As a side note, I no longer do any manual exfoliation. I do an Aztec bentonite clay mask every week.

@@jbates725 you might want to slowly introduce it to your routine. Use it twice a week or every other day. Then if you want to use it everyday I suggest you do that after 2 weeks. If you think you don't need exfoliation that much then you can do it twice or thrice a week. For me, it's a mild chemical exfoliation. My husband uses it on his underarms. As someone with very oily and acne prone skin, I have always loved AHA’s much more than BHA’s! I have tried many different salicylic acid products over the years, and it always irritated my skin too much or seemed to give hardly any to no results. AHA’s however gave me immediate results, like a beautiful glow, smoothness, radiance, and even anti acne benefits by dissolving the dead skin cells and preventing clogged pores. Nothing seems to help my oil production (which is just my genetics), not BHA’s.. not niacinamide.. But I am really doing best when using AHA’s :). I remember seeing photos of myself from a few winters ago and thinking: gosh, I look so dull and clogged up…. And that was before I dared to try alpha hydroxy acids. After that I never looked dull again and it really helps with my acne! Awesome stuff. Also, I use BP in the mornings for more anti acne action.

I was waiting for you to discuss this topic. Thank you Andrea.

Try Alpha Skincare products. They have an effective pH level and are reasonably priced. You can find them online at Walmart, Amazon, Ulta, etc. it is not a prestige product, so you can use Ulta coupons on them.

Dr. Dray: what is your opinion of products that combine all three types? For example, Gold Bond for Bumpy Skin has a triple exfoliating blend of AHA, BHA, and PHA. Also, it states that this is for the body....would it be too strong for the face?

I began using the bioderma glycolic acid peel. I was a bit nervous because I've had reactions to some skin care products. So far pretty good. I've only been using it for 1 week so not much difference but a little bit smoother. I am 39 and have all skin problems listed in every skin care website: combination oily/dry skin, open pores, sun/age spots, hormonal acne, those annoying little red veins, fine lines on my forehead between my eyes, and dull skin. Since I have no intention of piling products for each of these issues, I went with glycolic acid peel. I wash my face with cerave, moisturizer from cerave and la roche posay spf.

I alternate my Tretinoin and AHA on alternate nights. I use Tretinoin 4 nights a week and my glycolic acid on the other 3 nights. And of course, sunscreen every morning. Does this sound like a good idea? Or do you think tretinoin should be used every night? Thanks for a great video. Lots of interesting information.

Are you able to do that? I want to but I am afraid of burning my skin. In my experience, Retin A did not clean my face (I have a lot of blackheads) Aha and Bha keep my pores doing well. Because of that I do not use Tretinoin anymore. Maybe I should try. Let see what the doctor says.

Very informative; thank you! :D I am extremely dry and thought that a lactic acid might suit me best, you saying that it is the most moisturizing helps hugely. I am currently "only" using a hyaluronic acid underneath my moisturizer at age 45, because I think a retinoid, or retinol even, might be too drying for me. But I think in a couple more years I might have to up the anti-aging game.

I've been using retinoids (and sunscreen) for 25 years, people guess my age as 15 years younger than my 51 years.
Retinols are a great addition to an antiaging skin care routine but start out slow. I started using Retin-a twice a week and gradually built up tolerance.
It's important to not use skin care with fragrance (irritant) and a high broad-spectrum SPF (I use La Roche Posay sensitive sunscreen for kids). I use a light coating of moisturizer (I like CeraVe) prior to putting on the retinol, it acts as a buffer, reducing potential for irritation.
Dr. Drea is one of the most common sense practical youtubers out there, she has a lot of great information!

Elizabeth Detrich, I will maybe try a retinol when one becomes available in my local Aldi, as that and Lidl are about the only shops we shop at, and I am frankly not actively seeking it out ATM. My skincare is doing fine right now. But thanks for suggesting it! :)

What if we use the AHA at night and alternate it with the retinoids? For example:
    Night 1: AHA
    Night 3: retinoids
    Night 5: AHA
    Nighy 7: retinoids
Also if the lifetimes of AHA and retinoids are not too long, can we alternate and use them consecutively? Thank you!

a dermatologist doing a glycolic acid peel in the office is the most effective way, tbh...the concentrations are much higher and the delivery is more controlled, wheras at home products have numerous limitiations

Really interesting video. I have a question, which I apologise for if already asked by others. You mention the problems with using AHAs in the morning with other products. So, is it possible to alternate in the evening using a AHA one night followed by a non-prescription retinoid the next? Does this sound like a reasonable compromise? In the morning, you would then wear a sunscreen. Many thanks for posting great fact based videos, every time I watch one of your videos, a 'myth' dies.

Hi Andrea! I’m extremely curious about your thoughts on Kojic acid vs hydroquinone. I’ve been looking into purchasing a moisturizer that contains kojic acid in order to help lighten visible sun damage and age spots on my face, hands and arms. I have Scottish heritage which is most prominently seen through my fair skin and freckles so I also wonder if using a product containing kojic acid would also fade my freckles.

I'm glad you mentioned AHA's being able to help your nails!
I use a product called DermaNail on my nails. It's a clear liquid with mandelic acid as it's active ingredient. It takes a lot of patience, though, because you apply it 2 times a day at the cuticle and then wait for your nails to grow. As your nails grow, they really do get stronger and less brittle!

Having said that, nothing else has ever made my skin look better. And no problem with sunscreen either. Closest best product after aha is Medik8 Crystal Retinal.

Dr. Dray, I've been using AHA for around 3 years and I LOVE it. My skin looks better than it's ever looked as far as acne. If you want to try an over the counter line of AHA that REALLY works, and is consistent/reliably measurable in their amounts of AHA, try the Neostrata brand of AHA. You can order it from the Neostrata website, but I just buy mine from a supplier called Authentic Skin care on Amazon. Neostrata has an oily skin line and a normal/dry skin line of AHA products. I have acne prone oily skin so I used their oily skin line. Both of their lines are available in strengths starting out at 8% AHA and working up to 15-20% AHA. I used the 8% for about 6 months and then started using the 15% for a year. Now I alternate days with the 15% and 20 %. Here's an Amazon link to the oily skin 8% that I started out with if you want to try it. Make sure you get it from the supplier called Authentic Skin Care if you want to be sure of getting a true Neostrata product.
