A fun memory of seeing one of the touring Beatlemania groups was when midway through the show, they broke into "No Matter What". Halfway through the song, "Paul" and "John" stopped playing and one said to the other "Wait a minute! We didn't do that, it's not our song!" The other said "What do you mean we didn't do it! Of course, we did!" They asked "George" and "Ringo" who couldn't agree if it was a Beatles song or not, so the band just decided to finish the song to great applause from the audience.

Badfinger was a British rock band that had a close association with The Beatles during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The band was signed to The Beatles' record label, Apple Records, in 1968, and their first single, "Come and Get It," was written and produced by Paul McCartney.
The Beatles were fans of Badfinger's music and were instrumental in helping them gain exposure and success. George Harrison produced several of Badfinger's songs, including "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue," and the band often toured with or made appearances on stage with The Beatles.
However, the relationship between Badfinger and The Beatles was not always easy. Apple Records was beset by financial and management problems, which had a negative impact on Badfinger's career. The band members were also caught up in the legal battles that surrounded the dissolution of The Beatles and the dispute over ownership of Apple Records.
Tragically, two members of Badfinger, Pete Ham and Tom Evans, committed suicide in separate incidents, years after the band had broken up. The loss of these talented musicians was a reminder of the complex and challenging history that Badfinger shared with The Beatles.
"No Matter What" is one of Badfinger's most popular songs, released in 1970. It was written by Badfinger guitarist and vocalist, Pete Ham, and produced by fellow band member Tom Evans and Apple Records head, Mal Evans.
The song has been covered by numerous artists over the years, including Def Leppard, Cheap Trick, and Foo Fighters. It continues to be a popular and enduring classic rock song.

One of the greatest tragedies in rock n roll was the story of Badfinger. Mal Evans brought them to Paul first then later they all worked with the other three Beatles who signed them to Apple. Stan Polley was the biggest villain in this story . Straight Up and Wish You Were Here we’re their best albums.

What was so cool was most of the time 87% or 95% of the time we were busy living our life in fast motion and these songs came on one after the other. We had ZERO idea what any of them looked like. When I see a video of this..... I was shocked!
I just remember the fun, the times. I had no idea!
We weren't visually fixated except for that new boy at school or the trip to the lake and camp, that guy you danced with.
    It was just a
    "Sign Of The Times".

Day After Day was the song you did before, not Day By Day. This was a huge hit for Badfinger in 1970. Very Beatlesque. Badfinger were very talented. Pete Ham and Tommy Evens were amazing song writers in the Lennon/McCartney tradition. They have some very beautiful songs.

What you guys have to understand is that you are listening to the live version. Badfinger wasn't a great live band. But they excelled in the studio with producers like George Harrison, Mel Evans, Tod Rundgren and Beatles engineers Geoff Emerick and producer Chis Thomas. They played on albums from Ringo, John Lennon and George Harrison of course.

Amber hits the nail on the head when she says it’s more powerful than the average pop song. Well, Badfinger was one of the architects of power pop.
Sadly, Pete Ham (the lead singer) and Tom Evans would both commit suicide by hanging.
As such their songs leave me with more melancholy than most.
Perhaps their most melancholy song is “Dennis”.

Fun facts: Before they were signed to Apple, Badfinger's name was The Iveys. This was meant as a tribute to another British band, The Hollies (via the Christmas song "The Holly and the Ivy"). The Hollies in turn were named in tribute to Buddy Holly, whose band The Crickets was the inspiration for the name "Beatles." And Paul McCartney renamed the group Badfinger after "Bad Finger Boogie," which was the working title of the Beatles song "With a Little Help from My Friends."

The story goes that John Lennon was working out the melody for Ringo's With a Little Help from my Friends using his ' badfinger ' because he'd injured his index. Originally called the Iveys, the group's first big hit was Come and Get It, written and produced by McCartney. Although a solid group, the members had tragic endings.

I may have said this before, but the line "knock down the old grey wall" refers to the disused cowshed they rehearsed in, on a farm in the Swansea Valley in South Wales. If you see the promotional film for this song you can see it there.
When Badfinger were touring the USA they sent postcards to the wife of the farmer. Her daughter in law showed them to me

If there is truly a horror story end in recording deals and outcomes, these guys are it. The two chief song writers had such talent and the monstrous way they were treated led both of them to end their lives. Ultimately, it's up to us as listeners of 'real talent' to keep their music alive. And their songs are so good. Keep up the good work in your picks, Rob Squad!
