I was staying in a hotel in L.A. a few years ago, and beside the main elevators in the lobby, there was a plaque that said, "these elevators were used in the filming of James Cameron's 1994 film 'True Lies' with Arnold Schwarzenegger." Arnold riding the horse through the hotel and into the elevator to chase the terrorist is one of my favorite over-the-top action scenes of the 90s, and I was thrilled I got to use the same elevator.
9:33 The glass breaking always gets me. 20:31 Tom Arnold is "comedy sidekick" the way "comedy sidekick" *should* be written, but Rob Schneider is what we usually get.

Tom Arnold did an interview with I was there too that is a great listen, the line "What kind of sick bitch takes the ice trays" was something Tom actually said to Cameron while he was going thru a divorce. Cameron thought it was so good he wanted it in the movie
Such a gem of a film not just for its special effects, it's spot on for everything and when I was younger I absolutely loved watching Jamie Lee Curtis dance the way she does =P
I think the harrier effects in this film are some of the best I've seen on film due to how well they've held up, compare it to a similar scene in Die Hard 4.0 & I still think this film pulled it off better. I think Arnie also gives one of his best performances in this movie, I have to admit it's not one my fave Arnie films but it's in the higher end, it's entertaining with both action & comedy what more do you want?

MrSilksoul it’s not an early Cameron film or even 80s/90s action film with out Michael Biehn or Bill Paxton. Bill Paxton was in Terminator, Aliens with Cameron but was in Arnold’s Commando in a small part.
Why isn't this available on Blu-ray! I can't think of a SINGLE movie that had the budget and wide release this did and didn't get AT LEAST a half-assed DVD upscale release. Is there some behind-the-scenes legal shenanigans preventing it?
I remember reading something from James Cameron where he said that HD transfers had been made of both True Lies and The Abyss and he was waiting to review them closely so that they could get re-released in HD/Blu-Ray but hadn’t found the time to do it yet. That was years ago though... :/ So I think they’re simply in Limbo.
The part where Helen falls over and quickly gets back up to carry on the sexy dance as though nothing happened is gold. It was also apparently an accident as she supposedly lost her grip from the bed post.

For an action/secret agent/James Bond spoof - True Lies is still today pretty damn epiq. I loved it from the start to the end. In particular when it "slows down" and you get the whole Arnold/Helen storie where we almost forget about the terrorists - then BAM here they are again and we're back in action-land. A bit like a cartoon but in the best possible way. James Cammeron has always been an amazing craftsman. He knows how to cut and edit a movie as well as pacing and rythm. True Lies is no exception :-)

I think what Cameron meant was, since 9/11 and terrorists showing they weren’t just bumbling idiots they can actually kill, and have, the subject matter is just not humorous now
True Lies I consider as the last great Arnie movie, nothing he did afterwards was in the same league as his work before. The movie closes up Arnie's great run which started in earnest in 1984. The 10 years between 1984 and 1994 was the Arnie golden era.
I think the golden age of James Cameron's career was between (and including) The Terminator and True Lies. That's not to say his subsequent films were bad, often quite the opposite, but there's something special about those films which he hasn't quite been able to replicate. I do view Avatar as something of a low point, not counting Piranha 2 obviously. Even though the special effects really were mindblowing I wasn't impressed with the writing in the least bit.
Some quick thoughts: 1. Jamie Lee Curtis is just arch-perfect. 2. Tom Arnold is excellent. 3. Charlton Heston is brilliant and hillarious. 4. Bill Paxton is perfect. 5. Grant Heslov shines really bright in a relatively small role. 6. Art Malik is nailing his performance of the villain. 7. Arnie performs really well and is funny as never before / since. 8. The camera "low battery" scene kills me everytime I see it. 9. The striptease scene holds up even today and is really very sensible to both male and female audiences. Arnie's recorder malfunction is timed perfectly. All in all, this movie is amazing in being action-packed / ridiculous and funny at the same time. Thumbs up :-)
Just rewatched this today as an adult revisiting films from my childhood. It very much holds up and had me laughing loudly more than once. The horse chase scene is particularly fun.
It does take terrorism seriously, but it gives them moments of humanity. It’s not like the terrorists are cracking jokes, they’re deadly serious. It’s a well rounded movie in my opinion. And nuclear is pronounced “new klee er” not “new kyew ler” . Other than that, another great, fun review. Love this stuff.
It's odd regarding the obvious stunt double, because many of those moments are moments that Arnold still would have been able to do. Pretending to get punched by the big guy in the bathroom, sliding a bit down the snow while firing, running down the snow etc. I don't get why Arnold wasn't used, and it's one of the issues I have with this film. Other than a few goofy moments that don't always work, it's easily one of Arnold's best films, probably in his top 3 best action films, but that obvious stunt double annoys me to no end. It's so blatant, I wish they'd go back in now for a more natural remaster, and digitally place Arnold's Tasker face onto the stunt double.

@Oliver Harper, thanks for this nice analysis. I just realized something and its a bit of deja vu. The restroom scene in True Lies; it echos in many aspects to the T3 restroom scene done almost 10 years later. The thing is the scene in True Lies is all practical. It is so honest and real when juxtaposed to the CGI way of doing things with the digital restroom in T3. Computers have their place but clearly, when practical scenes are superior to CGI, what is the point then with using CGI? Sadly, Hollywood cannot answer this conundrum to my satisfaction.
Another great review of one of my favourite action movies Oliver. I think it's ridiculous that this, and The Abyss are still unavailable on Blu Ray. I think it's to do with the fact that these days Cameron is totally immersed Iwith those bloody Avatar sequels. And refuses to take the time out to contribute to putting together a decent blu ray package for both movies.
Can I just come right out and say it: I've always liked Jamie Lee Curtis as an actress in general, but I never thought of her as being particularly "sexy"... until this film came out. Holly HOTTIE, Batman! Crazy she never really showed how gorgeous she truly was until she was in her 40's. That said, I do love this movie as a whole, yes it's silly, but that's the point, right? It's silly and fun, yet very well produced and impressive to watch, even today. It has some amazing action, yet doesn't take itself too seriously... meanwhile, almost (seemingly) unintentionally draws you in and makes you like the characters.
The music on the build up to Arnie firing the missile through the building, is identical to the music on the buildup to the explosion at the end of Aliens. Is it the same piece of music, or just so similar my ears are deceiving me? Great review, as always! I saw True Lies at the cinema and got it on DVD. Always been up there are one of my fav Arnie films! Oddly, I never really took notice that it was James Cameron who directed it until this review lol. DOH!
James Horner recycled a lot of motifs across many movies. You'll hear them in Wolfen, Wrath of Khan, Aliens, True Lies, and to a lesser extent the Rocketeer, Willow and others. Not that this is a bad thing. But once you recognize them in one or two of his films, you will hear them in everything he ever did.
man miss James Cameron doing action/comdey movie like True Lies hope he get's back making more original movies like true lies, aliens, and the The Terminator. But great job Oliver wonderful review you did and so exited so your next review on classic movies always make day happy ;)

For me this film focusing on Harry and his wife is actualy a good thing. It makes the movie better when characters are more fleshed out.

I love your videos so much man.
11:50 Thats nuts.
Top Retrospective, awesome film, great ending . . . 'You're fired'. Good work Oliver, good work Arnie.
man miss James Cameron doing action/comdey movie like True Lies hope he get's back making more original movies like true lies, aliens, and the The Terminator. But great job Oliver wonderful review you did and so exited so your next review on classic movies always make day happy ;)
I always looked at this one as an Arnold action hero flick with James Cameron's touch.
Great video. Extremely well-done.
I wish Oliver would do a review on "Robocop" 1987
Great movie. I saw it when i was a kid and still catch me with emotion.
Great review - Very detailed and honest - Good job :)
