  • This video shows many buses with lots of passengers at the Kildee bus stop. The buses are newer 35 foot Orion I's and older GMC New Looks with a few 30 foot TMC City Cruisers passing by.
We continued to buy used New Looks until 1990 when the accessibility regulations kicked in and all buses (new or used) were required to have a wheelchair lift. The City Cruisers were too small and had structural problems. Some were sold to Ottumwa and some to Sioux City. One of them became the Ames P.D. mobile command unit.
We should have done a time series at this location; take the same shot at the same time of year, every 10 years to see how campus and the buses have changed.

Those 6V53 TMC CityCruisers sounded great! Loved the Orions & GMC's too. Great film

But every one of their Orion Is 1983-1988 use 6V71Ns (except the demo bus 1408 which had the middle-of-the-road 6V71TA, same as in Indy-Go's 1983 Orion Is as well as the 1985 Orion Is in Fairfax and the '84 Orion Is in Alexandria, VA and Rockville, MD) rather than 6V92TAs. They wouldn't go with that engine until the 1989 order of Gillig Phantoms which mated it with the Voith D863 a la AC Transit's 2600s, 2700s and 2800s.
