When NYC had frame failures on their brand new Grumman buses, they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars renting fishbowls from Washington DC and rehabbing 1966 to 1970s GM fishbowls at Blitz corp in Chicago. Those lasted into early 90s. 30 year old buses did not have engine cradles and frames sagging like this.

Thank you for not only posting this video, but allowing those of us in the transit business to reminisce about one of the greatest, most reliable, most durable buses ever built: The G.M. New Look. The fishbowl. I drove buses in Toronto for 25 years, save for one year when I drove in Vancouver. In 2017, on my wife's orders, I relocated to Orlando where I continue to be a bus driver for a charter company. I have been "lucky" in my career. I've had a few mishaps, but thank God (literally), nothing serious. It's when you get complacent for just a second that you can get in trouble. One of my fellow (now former) co-workers here in Orlando found that out the hard way a few years ago and had a catastrophic collision. I'd love to go into detail here, but I can't. I'll just say that she would have been exonerated had she not been playing with her phone for just two seconds, three seconds prior to the crash. My most memorable incident happened at the Toronto airport (old Terminal 1, circa early 1990s) when an RCMP officer slipped on the ice, off the curb and underneath my bus. I immediately stopped the bus, got out and helped him back on his feet. He thanked me for not running him over. I told him, "You've never given me a ticket, so the thought never even crossed my mind." He brushed himself off, we carried on our respective ways and that was the end of it. Like I said, a second is all it takes to make the difference between getting out and helping the guy up and making sure he's okay, and having to deal with a fatality.

This old safety film is very relevant right now. The Milwaukee County Transit System recently had two serious crashes in about a 48-hour period. A New Flyer Low Floor and a Nova Bus battery-electric were each totaled. In each incident, reckless drivers smashed into the bus and at least one person in each car was killed. One passenger on one of the buses was seriously injured. The Nova Bus -- used on the BRT route -- was less than a year old.

So fake its staged for the video. No bus number on it or bus company name gives it away and the other buses were different colors so it probably was a collection of buses.

The accident was filmed in downtown Edmonton on a Sunday morning, so we could have the streets blocked off. The ambulance ride is a loop around a couple of blocks. This film was the last of a set. There was an additional film on customer relations that was good but does not seem to have migrated to TH-cam. There were also three films about Light Rail Transit made between 1977 and 1982. Noted director Reevan Dolgoy also made a film about restoration of Edmonton streetcar #1 that includes rare scenes of the northernmost streetcar lines in North America.

Amazing how far American society has declined in such a short time.

No doubt the 1960s. Detroit used this paint scheme in this video during the 50s and 60s until about the late 70s. Busses then were solid white with a green and yellow stripe on the side just below the windows.

Chicago's D901's have a much deeper sounding transmission than the ones we used to have here in San Francisco.

But really, operating the bus is not what he's paid to do. Now that's weird.

I loved driving these while they were in service. Montréal removed them from service in 2001.

What a sucky attitude these people had. If it weren't for those workhorse buses, they wouldn't have had their jobs. Talk about ungrateful and self-entitled. That bus should have been saved, but I'm sure it wasn't, even though it had historical relevance.

as a retired driver of 31 years always laugh at old school traing techniques nowadays they spit on you curse at you new technology supposed to make life easier bus drivers have very low marale but provided good laugh

When I trained with ETS in 1979, not 1 bus on the fleet had power steering! Now at 73, certainly feeling the effects... In the winter, it took 3 guys and a small dog to crank that steering wheel!

random question? does anyone know what style farebox was in the bus in this video. My local transit company used them right up until a few years ago and then went with a smaller older looking farebox.

Was that Chong in that Green Ford? Good Video . I picked up a few Pointers from this, as I have just bought a 34 foot Gulfstream Class A motorhome . I remember the OLD Cream and Maroon ETS buses that they used until the Late 1960's !

Nice video, although it looks more like it's from 1965 or '66 than 1960. Most of the buses appear to be second generation (1963+). The GM/GMC New Looks are all great-looking, regardless of the year, however. Thank you for posting this interesting slice of history, from when people had good manners and cared about their appearance, and style was important, too.

If you watch the bus safety video by Lancer Insurance, (which appears to be maybe about 10 years after this) they actually make a point to tell you to avoid the button hook turn. They claim in their video that research both accident reports and camera footage of bus accidents shows that the button hook allows too much opportunity for a vehicle to sneak in on the right side. They claim that four-wheel operators will later tell the police that they saw the bus signaling for a right hand turn but positioning to turn left and assumed that the driver was giving the wrong signal. They say that the preferred method of right hand turns is the straddle method.

My bus driver got mad and slammed on brakes, everyone screaming, some fell on the floor. He threw up in the isle and said Fu*% all and ran down the street (never came back) I had to walk 3 miles home in freezing rain.

Perhaps she needs a new line of work? I feel sorry for the mechanic who had to do the bus repairs lol!

Canada refused new look flexible buses, they didn't want them
