James Edward Nelson (December 15, 1928 - September 24, 2019) was an American ventriloquist who appeared on television in the 1950s and 1960s. He is most famous for commercials for Nestlé chocolate featuring Farfel the Dog. He also hosted a children's show sponsored by Nestlé.
Jimmy and his puppets hosted two kids tv shows"Toyland Express"for The ABC TV Network in the 1950's and "Studio 991/2"for WNTA TV Ch.13 in The Newark,N.J./NYC viewing area in the early 1960's.
Jimmy and his puppets also recorded their own version of"Pinocchio"for Cricket Records and another instructional disc "Joke Along With Jimmy Nelson"for "Peter Pan"records..showing kids, how to perform comedy skits.
I think you are remembering Edgar Bergen with Charlie McCarthy. The dummies were very similar and Bergen was well known for great shows but moving his lips.
Update on my personal VA choices for the Nelsonic dummies: Farfel: Masami Kikuchi Danny O’Day: Junko Takeuchi Humphrey Higsbye: Takahiro Sakurai Ftatateeta: Yuki Kaji
In Japanese: Soyuuga, Hosuteruega (Hostelüger), and Koji Nerusonu. And those names were all made up by me. Meaning in Japanese, Humphrey Higsbye has one of the most German-sounding names you can imagine (Hostelüger). Soyuuga is Danny O’Day, by the way. And his name is not romanicized as Soyüger, it stays Soyuuga. And Farfel and Ftatateeta are... Farfel and Ftatateeta (Faaferu and Fatatatita).
And FYI, if the dummies of Nelson got their own anime series, here is who I believe they would be voiced by: Farfel: Takahiro Sakurai (same voice he used for Tentomon) Danny O’Day: Ayumu Murase Humphrey Higsbye: Whoever played Sasuke on Naruto/Takahiro Sakurai Ftatateeta: Yuki Kaji And as for Nelson himself? He’d be played by Norio Wakamoto, but in his younger years he’d be played by the same guy who plays America in APH (can’t spell his name).
The great Jimmy Nelson! He was considered the best by many of his contemporaries. RIP, sir and thanks for all the laughs!
First time seeing Jimmy Nelson. What an appealing character!
I got a Danny O'Day doll for Christmas in the 1960s; still have it!
I love how Nelson, through Danny O"Day, constantly puts down the ad he is forced to do.
RIP Jimmy Nelson. He just passed away of a stroke yesterday. He will be missed.
I had a Danny vent puppet as a child and a LP on becoming a vent, but this is the first time I ever saw them on TV.

This is also been used in I'm no Dummy! which was a great ventriloquist documentary.
I remember seeing this as a child. It was on the Milton Berle show.
That means that you are older than I am.
TIMBERRRRRRRRRR!
I still have a record of Jimmy Nelson & friends telling the story of Peter and the Wolf.
Richard Ranke I've heard that one.

I actually have the Danny O Day ventriloquist dummy
that was the biggest waste of a cameo appearance I've ever seen
