He was my first Doctor - and therefore my Doctor. I like the fact that his portrayal has a fallibleness and naivete that comes from his youthful appearance. Admittedly, I think the story quality is a bit inconsistent, and I actually think he should of done one season, as he seemed to be much more comfortable in the role and had higher quality stories for his final season. I also think he probably had one of the hardest jobs bar Patrick Troughton - as he had to replace Tom Baker after such a long, revered and iconic period in the show's history.
Davison was fantastic and the quintessential englishman. I love his Doctor berating the Cyber leader for not understanding the joys of 'a well prepared meal!'😂
Was a casual viewer through the Tom Baker era, but watched every episode when Davison took over. Always been my favourite doctor, with Earthshock probably my favourite Dr Who story.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos. I agree that Davison and his era is often overlooked. I enjoy this era, remember watching some of the stories on broadcast when I was a kid 👍
My favorite Doctor. He is very underrated. I get a lot of flack from older fans who prefer Tom Baker, but there is just something charming about the Davison era. In the last few years I've noticed that this era is getting more appreciation from the fans. I think the Blu-ray releases have helped.
My favourite Doctor now but wasn't when I originally watched in 82 probably because it was such a huge change after Baker. But Davison's Doctor is like a fine wine, he grows better with time. Davison was definitely underrated. And by me, I'm sad to say.
Yeah, yeah peter is hella underrated, he is one of the most doctorish incarnations to date i believe, especially in Caves of Androzani where he completely willingly selflessly sacrifices himself for someone he only knew for a single story (something which at that point i think he'd be thinking about Katerina) and dont forget he didnt know he was gonna regenerate at all, he though he was possibly just gonna die there
I say Earthshock was an awesome story, seeing the longawaited return of the Cybermen after a 6 year rest since 1975 with Revenge of the Cybermen with Tom Baker and also in Earthshock the Cybermen are portrayed like they were in the 60s Cybermen stories and also Adric,s demise is a shock like what happened in Blake,s Seven with Gan in the episode Pressure Point and also IMO Adric was seen in two stories with Dr 4 to pick locks like Vila did in Blake,s Seven and also when the 5th Doctor,s era started Blake,s Seven had recently ended with a brutal massacre of the heroes been shot dead.
Kinda is one of my top episodes of all time lots of psychological drama and Rouse's portrayal of descent into mental illness is outstanding. Great supporting cast in this era. Davison was also the Doctor at the shows 20th anniversary, and the extravaganza that was the Longleat event, where I got Janet Fielding's autographed pic that I still have.
Loved Peter Davison. Great actor. Loved his costume. At the time Peter himself thought that he was too young for the role but I thought he was brilliant.
At first . a fan of all chreatures great & small accepted the Davidson Doctor especially with the cricket puns . Over 4 years it did feel like he was on tv for 400 years . In sn Ustralian perspective we had doctor who on weekdays on repeat as well as new drwho episode offset by 6 months as it was mostly an august to xmas timeslot as our sports took over most scifi timeslots but then as they put it at 6pm /news time we would need two TVs in the house as parents would watch the news snd us kids had drwho in another room . Tom Baker was always the anacdotal doctoke.more theatric.
Peter had the job of following in Tom Bakers footsteps who as a younger Doctor. My young Daughter loved 5th Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa, and Adrian in Peters first season. Then in Peter's 2nd season Nyssa left and then Turlough joined. Season 3 Tegan left then Peri joined the show to join Colin Baker.
I never liked the way Dr Who was on twice a week during the 5th Doctor,s era it never worked and it ended the series too quickly had it remained on once a week on its saturday evening slot it would have been millions and billions of times better.
I am conflicted with evaluating Peter Davison's era. I love his portrayal and he had some of the best stories of Classic Who, especially with Earthshock and Caves of Androzoni. I just think he was let down with a lot of badly written serials plus JNT's insistence of packing the TARDIS with so many companions that splits the story too much. I say this while still appreciating the perfomances of all the companion actors even the much maligned Matthew Waterhouse. I appreciate "Old Sixie" aka Colin Baker similarly even though he had a lot of bad writing and advice on how to portray the character and definitely got shorted with the hiatus, the Trial of the Timelord season and being dropped like a bad hat. I'm glad that all these actors have gotten better treated with Big Finish. Poor Slyvester McCoy just hit his stride when they pulled the plug. Basically, JNT was both a blessing and a curse to the series.
Being 15 vs. 10, I never warmed to Davison compared to Baker. Looking back it was as much to do with the budget compared to American movies. They just had to put in those cheesy monsters (the merker monster, Kinda, and Magma creature).
When the series was cancelled and was in the wilderness years. Pre-McGann, Eccleston,Tennent etc. Davison is my favorite Doctor next to Troughton and McCoy. His character is as original as it can come. He was young, down to Earth and sporty(Crickateer). Yeah, Davison has said the rest of his tenure was “CRAP”. But it was good and worth the weight of gold as I(We) have seen the worse(Chibnall Era).
It's a very uneven run of stories with some great ones and some real stinkers like Timeflight. Also some of the companions aren't great though at least they killed the awful Adric off.
JNT was right about the Sonic Screwdriver just look at how it's abused in NuWho 😂. I'm sure you missed 4 to Doomsday easily done. I think that was the first recorded story of the 5th Doctor and he is so different argumentative, arrogant to what we know him for. Although some of those traits did follow him but not so aggressively as in that story.
For me, sadly the Fifth Doctor has a fairly good run for most of Season 19, up until Earthshock and then it is massively downhill from there. He becomes an ineffectual bystander after and could even be described as "unfit for purpose" as the show's hero. Terminus and Warriors of the Deep are the unforgivable nadir of this. In his last outing, Caves of Androzani, he gets to go out like a hero but by then for me the damage is done. Sadly I feel I would like his Doctor a lot more had the show ended on Time-Flight or The Five Doctors.
Underrated? Miscast I think. Peter Davison played the character Tristan Farnon in the BBC television series “All Creatures Great and Small” from 1978 to 1990, he also played Dr Who 1981 to 1984 these two parts could not have been more different. In Dr Who he was just a shouty out of breath character, not helping being partnered with the worst most annoying companion Adric.
The 5th Doctor not my fave but is more of a tragic incarnation. He tries his best to be pacifist and find other solutions but sadly all end in death and violence gradually building up to his final season where death of people/aliens hit high numbers, regardless if they were good or bad. Resulting in a companion leaving due to so much death. Yet he was never violent (maybe threatening on occasion like with Davros) but he had a naive air about him which sadly was his undoing.
There are some great 5th doctor episodes but I also felt he was the worst part of them. He was dismissive of his companions, inconsistent and generally irritating to watch imo.

@@sd-11-11-sd Quintessentially English, come on, reference cricket a couple of times does not make him quintessentially English.
Ah, my favourite Doctor!
The first 5 Doctors are my favorite

Five definitely was underrated. He remains my favourite Doctor.

Peter Davison is my favorite Dr

A hard act to follow Tom Baker. Davidson was always going to be compared.

I bet there were a lot of Tom Baker withdraws when Peter Davison took over as The Doctor

An excellent actor who was let down by lousy stories .Peter Davison referred to them as "duff".
