How CODES become THEMES - Questions that YOU should ask yourself when developing themes

  • I explain how to develop themes and what questions I ask myself to turn my codes into a thematic framework. Thematic analysis is a very subjective process, it all depends on the aims of your study and your research questions. The thematic framework that you will develop depends only on you and your study. Therefore, it is very important to understand what themes are and how to develop themes from your codes

    Thank you for this explanation, because I am at this point of decision making about what data I use and have a found a lot is not necessarily relevant for my topic. So was feeling guilty about not using all the data or mentioning it in my report, also because the participants were eager and generous with their time and they hope to read my study.

      I'm glad that this video clarified this for you. Yes, it is a common assumption that we need all our codes but this is simply impossible - people can't possibly be talking on topic for 100% of the time :)

    Dr. Kriukow, thank you so much for the video. While you suggested strategies in the video such as thinking about the data while taking a walk, would you recommend going back to the theoretic framework (if the study has one) as a guideline to generate themes?

    • @qualitativeresearcher
      @qualitativeresearcher  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this will depend on your approach, if your study is strongly deductive and the purpose of your analysis is to fit your data into categories determined by a previously existing framework, then you would use that as a guidance

    Thank you very much for your videos, Dr Kriukow, super helpful. Just to clarify, are you suggesting that not all of the data will be put into the final themes/sub-themes, only those that are relevant to the research question? I feel like I cannot achieve to have 3-4 main themes while considering the whole data. Many thanks for your reply in advance. :)

    • @qualitativeresearcher
      @qualitativeresearcher  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bernadett. Yes, this is correct - there will be codes that you delete, or sometimes rename/merge with other codes, etc. I know it is difficult to make these decisions, but this is what you need to do. Also, you do not need to only have 3-4 main themes. You can have more than this

      @@qualitativeresearcher Thank you very much. I watched another of your videos about an example in NVivo, that was fantastic and to remember to keep the research question in mind. I feel I understood that the data is larger than we need and could answer multiple research questions if needed so we need to focus on the one we need right now. Thanks again. 🙂

    WHY IN some tutorials codes are leveled under categories then categories are leveled under themes. In other references, categories are not mentioned, themes come as the next step after finishing coding?

    • @qualitativeresearcher
      @qualitativeresearcher  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you're right, this can be really confusing, and this basically depends simply on what set of terms you choose to use. Also, there are some methodologies that favour their own terminology, as in grounded theory where you would be using "categories" rather than themes - this is "by default", although nobody said you cannot change this. I did gt studies and stuck to my good ol' "themes" and "sub-themes". When it comes to codes, in turn, codes are a bit of a different thing, codes are simply a unit of analysis and a label that you use while the analysis is still in progress. The way I usually explain this is that the moment your codes leave the data analysis software, they stop being "codes" and "sub-codes" and become themes and sub-themes (or categories if that is what you choose to use). Regarding all the other stuff, apart from codes, it is a matter of what classification you choose to follow and then you just need to be consistent not to confuse others
