    If you are replace it to a single hook, what is the hook ratio if you are using a single hook? Is this the one that cost $15 or $10?

    Nice video! Like the time and detail, you are putting into this and your Tranx series. I actually picked one up myself; the 300 low gear. Do you think the retrieve is quick enough to impart the action needed for SP's etc. or should I opt for the HG counterpart?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Ryan, It's fast enough no doubt. It'll be easier to wind in other baits "suicide slow" as well.

    I did the upgrade to gamakatsu 510 hooks but found the sinker SP Minnow didn't swim as well as the original setup it just tracked straight in the water with no little wiggle. I really like the idea of going to inline hooks especially with Bluefish around. I'm going to try it on a floater next.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is very peculiar. As I can't see a difference in action. Since the weight is pretty similar.
      For the bluefish try one of the tady lures. As a single hook is the best bet. And Sp minnows swim poorly with just a tail hook.

      Thanks man! Those are gamakatsu 510 hooks. In a size 4/0 ( i mistakenly said 5/0 in the video) Not a widely sold hook so some googling may be needed to find them.

      I think I may have mispoke somewhere...I said at one point 5/0...but meant 4/0...Half the time I call them gamakatsu 410.... and 410 looks like 4/0 :)

    How strong of a split ring do you personally use with the 510 ? Do you use VMCs?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think i'm using # 6 rings with the 510s on other plugs. (i used the stock rings scrapped from the cut in half lure to outfit this one)
      I use their trebles and siwash hooks. But Stopped using their inline singles after having breakage broblems on their FW sized 2.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately there is no such thing as a "Best Color"
      I often use yellow over white, olive over white, school bus, wonderbread, blurple, Chartruese. I always found profile, presentation and action are more important than color. I like green tails on my tins. And chartruese over white or olive over white for my teasers when using them

    What size 510's and split rings would you use on a SP 15?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I"ll use a 5/0 mustad kaiju inline (because they're cheap (just started using them late this spring) Not a bad hook.
      But two 60 or 80lb rings with a 3/0 510 would work great

    Hello AT, your analysis was very interesting, thanks for sharing. You may try and look for "inline hooks" to replace the treble hooks. It would be a better choice for you, I do it. I like to use Daiwas lures as well. The Salt Pro is a very good one and I I didn't know the 17. Last year I began to use the Daiwas Vertice and Setupper. They are much more expensive but their colors and performance are top. The only issue I experienced are the hooks which are too thin.. please let me know if someday you do your review to those Daiwas. Last, given all your expertise, you may watch my last videos and I'm sure you can give me tips to improve my homemade lures... I will be very grateful.

      I get a few rapala from the states, I like the shadow raps they work very well on our flathead. Ive recently come across Payo lures, I am told they are made in the same factory as megabass and many others. I got my personal best flathead 91cm on the Payo oneten, identical to the megabass oneten with different paint, hooks and split rings $12AU delivered versus $40AU plus delivery. Worth getting some to have a try.

    Unfortunately the 17 does not cast well. It tumbles. Too bad since its the right size.

  • @richdunn9774
    @richdunn9774 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Owner in line hooks have the eye orientated so you wouldn't need that second swivel on the single hook set up .

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you referencing the gamakatsu with the 2 rings?
      If so the sole purpose is to move the hook further away and decrease leverage. So 3 rings would be needed for the owner where as 2 work perfect with the 510. It's similar to canal rigging where you would use a ring swivel cut eye treble...or ring swivel ring swivel.

    I bought one of these larger SP's by accident and they suck. They cast about as well as my fridge. I'll stick to the regular size instead. The retrieve is also off compared to the original it has too much resistance.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      it's worth mentioning to those saying the 17 doesn't cast as far as the 15....that is false. On a rod capable of throwing the added weight casts further. So many people have stated the same thing....I figured I'd test it for myself because I found that to be wrong. On a rod rated to 3 ounces the distances were similar. On a rod capable throwing heavier payloads it cast as much as 60 feet further....It's not the indian or the arrow...but the indian and the bow :)

    I really prefer to use singles on all my artificials, just like you, if I can. I never liked how trebles are much more dangerous, will pull free and if not, then rip the hec out of a fishes mouth(I c&r a large majority of what I catch). That being said, double singles do not work on these lures(15 size) unless you fish them very slow. The trebles act as stabilizers and prevent rolling at faster speeds. One of the only lures I still use trebles on now. It's really too bad. I might try to experiment again in the future.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have about a dozen sp 15's with a single belly hook or double singles. Sized right they work just was well.
      I swing them in 3kt current as well as in rolling foam in the surf and they track equally fine.
      Additionally, what species are you targeting? 99.99% of the time it's for bass and blues....So I'm never burning them in. But they don't burn out in the back side of a wave and dig perfectly.
      What size single did you try?
      If you use a single on the rear only and no belly hook the action will be thrown off.

    • @ChiefToad
      @ChiefToad 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used them mostly for trevally. Bluefin and smaller gt. Those fish demand really high speed retrieves most of the time. Either ripped in fast. Or pause, sweep type retrieves. Always use both belly and rear hooks. I tried various brands. The Owner inline eyes, VMC black nickel ones, Decoy jigging hooks, Mustad as well. I have just about every inline eye offering out there. I think I mostly used around 4/0-5/0 at the time, depending on brand. I have also used them on Stripers(west coast) and I know you don't have to fish them nearly as fast so it might not be as apparent to those that solely target them!?
