    Wiggins was never a bust, was averaging 20 ppg in Minnesota just wasn't in the right situation for his strengths. Averaging 20 ppg with no injuries disqualifies a top pick from being a bust in my opinion. There's a grey area between not being a generational talent and being a bust as a top pick. Wiggins was in that grey area and still receiving hate. Maybe we should stop calling prospects the "Next Lebron" or "Next KD" and then we can better appreciate them for the players they are.

    • @MoralesCorner
      @MoralesCorner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +99

      A huge grey area. To me a bust is a player who came into the league as a high lottery pick and ended up out of the league shortly after because he was just no good enough for the league. Good example is Kwame Brown, a number one pick who didnt become a star but that managed to stay in the league for more than a decade with decent role player minutes and numbers. To me he's not a bust. But a player like Anthony Bennett or Hasheem Thabeet are true busts to me, because they werent able to stay in the league more than a couple seasons and didnt really have much playing time

    • @mattmmixes
      @mattmmixes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      But at the same time teams invest everything into picks, if you get drafted first overall you need to be a top 20 player for the team to see the pick as a success. I don’t think those are unreasonable expectations considering the draft spot. Wiggins is definitely one of the better first overall disappointments but still disappointing none the less, the term bust has different meanings to different people so that’s more just an opinionated thing.

    • @stringer2295
      @stringer2295 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Bro Andrew Wiggins was putting up empty stats on a losing team. He’s the only dude that I could honestly say he was a bust scoring over 20.

    • @lakerskid2013
      @lakerskid2013 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I consider people like that semi busts, good enough to stay around and still at least decent but not bad enough to where they completely flop either. Sure, they didn’t live up to expectations but they don’t completely suck at the same time. For the NFL, I think of WR Ted Ginn as one of those semi bust type players.

    • @domcrist22
      @domcrist22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@MoralesCorner I agree the grey area is large but Kwame is a bust as a top pick in my opinion he averaged single digits and was essentially a role player his entire career. From a #1 pick, I need you to at least become a top tier starter aka 3rd/4th option on a good team. I think if you produce less than that it can be argued you are a bust

  • @arizjones
    @arizjones 2 ปีที่แล้ว +224

    Both Gordon and Wiggins just needed an environment where the offense moves the ball and players are unselfish, and you don't have to create your own shot off the dribble every time. Lots of players could be helped by that.

    • @Peanutdenver
      @Peanutdenver 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      100%...neither of these dudes were busts. AG was one of there very few performers for the Magic and just tried to carry the team as best he could. Gordon was averaging 18-20 a game which is decent. Also it's the coaches and staff job to mentor and direct the player into a position he will excel at, it's not a pick up game at the park were you bounce around playing whatever position you like shooting 3's and posting up then turning into a defensive specialist. I blame the Magic's staff more than I do AG....same goes for Wiggins. Busts are players who were expected to excel or even dominate and then completely FAIL in the game.

      @@nydibs How do you figure he is a #4? In the Finals they just won, he was the second best player, and they wouldn't have won that championship without him. His lock down defense of Tatum was great. He is no bust. Many number one draft picks don't become top five or six players in the league. That doesn't make them a bust. Anthony Bennett, Kwame Brown, Michael Olowokandi, Greg Oden, Adam Morrison, Darko Milicic, Sam Bowie, and Pervis Ellison are busts. Wiggins is not in that category.

    • @nydibs

    I remember when Wiggins got drafted #1 in 2014 to the Cavs. Everyone knew he was going to be the trade piece to get Kevin Love. And so the wolves pulled the trigger on the trade. And then KAT comes in to play alongside Wiggins and both of their careers get stuck and they can’t go anywhere. The Nuggets didn't trade for Gordon because of the Murray and MPJ injuries. Murray got injured a couple of weeks after the trade and MPJ was relatively healthy at the time. There were several games with the "Big Four" on the court before the Murray injury and the Nuggets won them all. Gordon was brought to Denver as a missing puzzle piece to aim for the title. Only after those injuries was his role changed, since the Nuggets weren't seen as the title contenders anymore.

    I find it funny when people call Wiggins a bust because using their own logic, KAT might as well be a bust. He averagedpretty similar stats as wiggins during his rookie season and even currently in his 8th year, the wolves are struggling to even stay in the play in(even with Anthony Edwards, DLo, and Gobert)
    I've read through the comments and I see that people that think Wiggs is a bust think it because he is not the first option in his team....which is stupid because the warriors are contenders.

    Neither Wiggins or Gordon was ever considered a bust. This is a bad take.

    • @Erinxh
      @Erinxh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to agree that they were never considered busts. I can't remember them being labeled 'busts' by the majority, they were obviously disappointing and not meeting expectations. (Whether those expectations were fair is another question too.) But busts? Nah. Being a disappointment doesn't equal being a bust. I don't think most people labeled them busts. Andrew Wiggins averaged around 18-20 points per game while playing for the Wolves, someone who averages those kind of numbers can't be considered a 'bust'. The thing is they were just never winning, and therefore were 'disappointing'. But not busts. Depending on the context, averaging 18-20 points per game can be considered disappointing. But never a bust. We need to separate disappointing from bust.
      When I think about busts, I think of guys like Anthony Bennett, Kwame Brown, Hasheem Thabeet, Greg Oden (Al tough not necessary due his own actions.) and others. I don't think that the majority ever had framed, labeled or classified Wiggins and Gordon in the same group as the guys I named above. So no they were never considered 'busts' by the majority.
      Sure there is always a minority who have called them busts, (And some probably still do.) but we can't use the voice of the minority as THE generalization. Cause if we did than guys like Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Wilt Chamberlain, LeBron James, Tim Duncan, Larry Bird, Bill Russell, Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O'Neal, Stephen Curry and many more or better said, all players who have every played the game of basketball are all considered busts too. Cause there is always without a doubt one person or a few (Therefore a minority.) on this planet who would call these guys busts.
      I think the problem probably lies in the fact that there isn't a true definition for the word 'bust'. Some use the word as alternative to 'disappointing'. And others to guys who aren't 'winning'. To me you are a bust when you can't play the game of basketball on a professional level. (On a consistent basis.)

    Depends on what you consider a bust. Williams played over a 1,000 games, so obviously he had talent. On the other hand, as a second overall pick you're expecting a multi time all star, possibly a hall of famer. He never even averaged 15 ppg.

    "Bust" seems to me like a harsh label based on how Aaron Gordon was perceived at the end of his Orlando Magic stint. Frustrating offensive player, sure. But he was a consistent starter and an excellent, versatile defender. The expectations around him weren't anywhere near Wiggins-level.

  • @53ddddateme
    @53ddddateme 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    People really out here changing the narrative around Wiggins. People seem to forget that he was seen as the best prospect since Lebron, The next Best player of the league, people even saw his game as a rookie against Kobe as a passing of the torch moment. Everyone thought he was gonna be a star, what we then got after his roty season was inefficient high volume scoring and nowhere near the level of defense we see him play on Golden State. People forget that before joing GSW we saw Wiggins as a player who got complacent once he got his big contract, we saw him as a fringe all star at best when he was supposed to be the face of the league. As for AG he was never really expected to be a star

    • @popstarkirby
      @popstarkirby 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, he was a former number one pick, one of the “chosen ones”. He’s not really a “bust”, more like never lived up to become a superstar. He’s a decent starter, hard to say he “revived his career”.

    I don’t believe either of these two were true busts, especially wiggins. They may have underwhelmed for their draft position, but they weren’t really busts, they still had roles, and they contributed. Sure they’ve definitely improved, but I don’t think they were true busts

    NBA owners regularly, and incorrectly, believe physical talent is leadership. Wiggins and AG are very physically gifted but that does not make them team leaders. Both these dudes shine brite when there is another player on the team who fills that roll.

    We really need to separate bust from not reaching insane expectations. He’s a 20+ PPG scorer I don’t know know we can see that is a bust.
