Squeezing A Turbocharged 2.0L AMG Engine Into A Mercedes 190E - FCP Euro's Golden Era Project Pt. 1

- ► DTM’s “Golden Era” was filled with shrieking, 10,00RPM+ monsters and over-boosted beasts that regularly pushed the envelope of what was capable from a four-cylinder engine. Thirty years later, AMG has built the M133, a fire-spitting, turbocharged animal that has wiped the floor with everything in its class. The 190E’s original engine was never going to cut it in the DTM tribute, but a modified, modern equivalent of the race engine sure will.
The 190E shell is finally ready for some clever engineering. The Merc's original steering, suspension, and braking components just aren’t going to be up to the task, so it’s up to Nate and Danny to figure out where they can update the tired Mercedes with modern AMG parts, including that engine. Slapped into a caged and stripped chassis with a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, the M133 should feel right at home, though not without some modifications first. Find out just what it takes to bring a 190E into the 21st century right here in part 1.

for a car builder, this guy has the cleanest hands ever
at 17:44 wondering if he wants to keep them
Gloves, my man. People say that about me all the time. But I wear gloves all day. No time to wash your hands every time to need to get inside and touch something. Put a grease stain on the console of a $120k W223 and watch how fast Dr. Smith loses his mind on your service advisor. 😂
While I can still appreciate the love and dedication that goes into making a roll-caged track car to fling around circuits, I still vastly prefer a street car design with a proper interior. I mean, the 190e may have been a homologation special, but what really made it so special is the attention to detail and bulletproof engineering that went into the car as a complete package. The lines run under a false floor through the interior of the car to prevent damage and corrosion, the literal centimeters of foam beneath the carpets for noise isolation, the robust design of all of the interior components so they couldn't rattle or squeak, etc. Then there's the engine that just refused to go wrong unless you abused it terribly. By making a track-focused car out of it, you do lose out on what makes the complete package so compelling. I'd love to see a second iteration of this where you use the same restomod upgrades to the drivetrain, but you go further and upgrade the interior as well.
We definitely hear you on this one; the Cossies of history were truly something special. While this build definitely has racetracks in mind, it's also worth noting how similar the spirit of the M133 we're using here is to the original spirit of the Cosworth-tinkered M102s you'd find in the cars of history.
Both engines began life in a pedestrian blueprint (The M133 block is based upon the standard M270 four-cylinder, the Cosworth M102 upon a standard M102 four-cylinder) and received a significant overhaul to include forged internals, maximized airflow, and a power output near-enough to 400. Our M133 may leverage a turbocharger and some modern engineering including direct-injection, but it's about as close to the spirit of the DTM cars of the "Golden Era" as you can find on the roads today!
And thats your preference. If it bothers you so much make one of your own and stop projecting onto other people
@@km6832the grown folk are talking..
The 190 was the first Mercedes engineered to a price target, so technically it was the beginning of the end for Mercedes quality.

Great to see projects like this being undertaken in 2024 . We live in a world of 200+ mph super cars and even a mid range German family estate car has 400 hp but all painfully boring. A friend recently called by with his 850hp Chipped RS6 Avant. Yes quick but not exactly fun and obviously an Auto like all the modern stuff. About 20 years ago i did a similar project to this. I fitted the running gear from a damaged 190E DTM touring car into my 1954 MG Magnette race car.Definitely livened it up.
Approx 380hp @ almost 10.000 rpm and proper 5 speed dog leg dog engagement close ration G Box. Not silly power but plenty for a 900 kg car and more fun that anything you can purchase off the shelf and super competitive in Hill climbs and sprints.
The car manufactures are lost in a world of chasing BHP and the obsession with 0 to 60 times. 0 to 60 in 2 seconds and 250 mph does not always mean fun especially on a public road .Looking forward to watching progress .
Now that's a swap! Talk about a crazy powerband in a tiny car, we can only imagine what that thing felt and sounded like. Googling also yields us some pictures of #28, and the M102 looks quite at home in there!
A good powerband in a good chassis does wonders for driver enjoyment!
Finally someone is doing something fun and interesting with the AMG 45 engine! Awesome work guys! Cheers from Finland!
The M133 is MASSIVELY under appreciated. Ours has been through some abuse, and at over 100,000 miles, we have no concerns.
My father works at mercedes and I personally own a W176 A250 petronas motorsport edition, we both loved this video! Greetings from Germany, you guys are doing a great job!@@fcpeuro-media
thanks for putting this series together
Our pleasure!
Wow impressive. Delighted to see parts flying in and problems being solved left right and center.
I adore and love these professional builds and can't wait to see it perform 👌
sweet project!
Wooow beautiful youtube video! Great content. Definitely subscribed!! Cant wait for the other content and creations. I love all the custom fab work and the explanations 👌🏻👌🏻
Can't wait to see the finished job
Its finished
We promise, this W201 ends up being everything we hoped and more.
I love this engine soooo much. I hope we'll see more swaps of this engine into more different cars.
Awesome build guys !!
Excited to see more updates! I do wish it was uploaded in 4k though, quality is lacking :(
Finally!!! I was dreaming of puttuing 2.0l A45 engine to w124 and now you did it. Thanks a lot. You don't how i am thankful to you
@@bingusbungiswystryungus125 i know it is not w124 but almost same car. Anyways, thanks you
Stuff like this is why I buy parts from you guys.. and the fast shipping and customer support
❤glad to see it all adds up haha
Can't wait to see the finished job))))
Man, this place is the paradise, you have the tools, and in the back office you have a giant auto parts, with a inventory that you can chose what ever you need or want hahha Jesus, the paradise exist!
thank you for this series, you guys have my thumbs up! always!
We'd be lying if we said we weren't a bit spoiled!
awesome project !
Love your build videos!
Appreciate it - more to come!
Whoa, tuning to 500 bhp on this retro chassis is going to be lots of fun on the race track. Great idea and ideal match between engine and chassis. This c;laasic shape gives real retro vibe and style. Love to see it doing laps on the track.
Great work guys!!!
Thanks 🙏!
insane project, love your work so far you guys look clean when working! Do you think it would be possible for those old engines from that era to go from mechanical injection to electronic?
👍💪good job guys
Something that really stands out as someone from the UK is how clean the shell is. It's a late 80s car, built extremely well (obviously) and has been taken care of. Neat cutting skills too! Well done you guys, great project. Would be cool to try and retain AC!
Appreciate you watching - for $2000 not sure we could have got ourselves a better starting point than this!
@@fcpeuro-media That car being 2 grand is insane to me, here in Norway that'd easily be 20.
CAD = Cardboard aided design. Love the turbo, intercooler, intake routing, really clean!
Glad you like it - we are pretty stoked with how it turned out
I enjoyed the start of the tear down especially when observing the 'old school technology speedometer cable going to the transmission. Because to me old school tech is when the cable goes to the hub center and is driven off of the front wheel hub. 🎉😎🤣
I have always wanted to take the motor out of my CLA45 shooting brake, but I may just use a K24 honda engine as they are a hell of a lot cheaper. Keep up the good work guys Im looking forward to seeing this 190E hit the road and track.
The turbo being closer to the exhaust ports is much more important for lag as it can spool up faster. A spooled up turbo will fill that air volume in approximately no time flat, though minimizing that tubing length has plenty of other advantages and doesn't hurt a thing.
There are a bunch of haters for no damn reason! This is badass! There is real scrappy expertise on display here. I like this project, on to the next video!
Learned a lot
Love to hear it - thats the goal!
That car was perfect
You know if these guys built it that it’s gonna be on point
I have the same model W201 this car is awesome
That was a beautiful interior though.
"A beaten old 190e" your definition of a beaten car and mines obviously different. That looked like a good example to me 😅 still like the project though 👍
🤣😅 - It wasnt in the worst shape but still only a couple grand $ to start the project!
Ya, in my town there's one, he dailys it, i don't think he knows what he has, its just a rust bubbled everywhere old car to him.
The trick to floor insulation is a reciprocating air saw with a saws, all blade cut like a chisel across the end and sharpened. It will remove that undercoating so fast it’ll blow your mind.
they have a spray that does the dry ice thing, you should looking into it!
Fckn yea this is the content I been dreaming about lol🎉🎉
yaaaassssss 😍
I really like the idea of the 2liter as a swap - 400hp in stock form for everyone screaming "V8!".
Looking at the intercooler and exhaust plumbing makes me rethink the practicality. I imagine that the RWD version of this engine is an easier swap though?
Asking for my Volvo 240🙃
"beaten old 190e" brother we have very different definitions of beat
Lol it did look pretty clean
That's crazy I thought the same thing 😊
Where did you get that body? Usually they have rusted up to windows for now.
I need the seats. door panels and steering rack among others please ❤❤❤
Speedo cable - 'old school tech right there..' Thanks for making me feel old ha!
I want this as a street car so much. No roll cage, full interior, street engine mounts etc. And yes, I get that the idea of this is a track car and more power to them but this would an amazing daily.
We thought about it keeping full interior - some regrets not being able to drive it from event to event...
Whose coil spring compressor is that??
This project is so SICK. But you picked the wrong engine
Why? They didn’t use the V8 back then. They also weren’t turbocharged 😅
36:50 Impress and amaze your friends and instill fear and doubt in the hearts of your enemies: Keep a peripheral eye on that bolt heading to fall off the table but allow it to fall. Knowing this you plan the next move by anticipating where you will need to be to catch it during the fall. You then deftly snatch it mid air while continuing on with your other task. Ninja!
Make the headlights in the open chassis holes in the front. That'll look sick imh opinion
That’s so far from a beat old 190e that is a very nice example.
47:28 What wheels are those?? I love them! Looking to get a similar pair for my W140 S600 project!
OZ Rally Racing is the actual name
You didn’t notice his butt crack around the same time? Lmfao go check for yourself 😂
Ah Nate, you impressed them all doing the princess getting dirty routine.
Did they ever say what the steering rack was out of? Mentioned it's features, but what was ot sourced from?
E46 M3, adapted to the C63 knuckles with E90 M3 inner tie rods!
Good luck lads
27:19 😂😅💚💯
40:24 I'm no engineer but I think it needs a lil bit of flex or it will create it's own flex point. poly bushes maybe?
We have already started iterrating a v2 with some delrin bushings 👍
I have never seen an engine mount like that before 😮
Custom! Gotta do what you gotta do to make an engine mounted the wrong way fit the chassis!
i think the producer of this video should consider hiring a new cameraman, Someone who is not with Parkinson's desease.. 😅
Someone puts out this awesome content for free and that’s all you have to say 🙁
You should check Anderson Dick project of the 190E that he is building, Senna inspired with very good parte and gonna be powerfull one too
I've seen this one before, is this a reupload?
We re uploaded this compiled version as we get ready to formally launch this new FCP Euro channel!
The voice over is A1. James Earl Jones class.
Haha - thats Alan , he works on our Customer Service team (we stole him for some voiceover)
What's the name of the soundtrack on 23:00?
DO A W215 CL65 BUILD!
How can you be sure about the oil level? because this engine only has a oil-level-sensor, no manual dipstick. If you change the engine position away from stock, the oil-volume will be not correct shown on the dash. maybe you have to remeasure the oil-pan- / oil-volume. Greets from Stuttgart ;)
Yeah DTM cars are so so much different today than they where in there early 90's BMW and Mercedes AMG where killing back then and BMW today is beyond exceptional with there sedans and Coupes easily they best grocery getter that'll set records at a race track
Truly the Golden Era..... we hope to take it back , one build at a time!
Ma uno studio a tavolino con un bravo disegnatore meccanico?
Damn TH-cam unsubbed me again. I had completely forgotten about this build and channel.
Where are y’all located can you build my car project
I wanted this episode to continue for a good 30 minutes at least
We were worried people would think its too long at an hour! Part 2 is another 40 minutes and already uploaded 🙂
I thought the 190E had 4 bangers? That looks like a 300E engine you pulled out?
I noticed that too

DUDE! Why did you remove the AC compressor?????
Don't need AC where this thing is headed!
@@fcpeuro-media Even GT3 Race cars have AC.
watkins glen!
That is one massive wiper haha
Clears alllllll the rain
@@fcpeuro-media I bet it does haha, no RainX for this car :p
What all Honda guys tried to replicate.. as BTCC and ETCC cars used.
That thing will be awesome, a little heavier with all the red loctite it will need to not rattle itself loose with that hard-mounted drivetrain.
Will it be comfortable? Maybe not! But will it be fast? Absolutely!
@@fcpeuro-media For sure! expecting some antilag and flames from this one!
Could/ should have put in some suspension bushings* at the end of those engine mounts. Just needed slightly bigger size of piper to do that.
*Volvo rear axle bushings would work 😉
@@thatdudeinorange5269 yeah, but i get what they did. Because RaceCar you know?
Bro have you met Tavaresh?
Is that Ed Boolean narrating? lol
I was thinking the same thing.
Do I have to be young? I came in and spoke with Nath (Steve from Tas) and told him the project XF ute I am trying to do in my Dad's memory. I am slowly getting tools as I can afford. Not in a situation to buy good tool right off the bat. Would be for ever grateful if picked.
Cheers,
Guys
Greetings from Sindelfingen/Germany
Greetings friend - thanks for watching!
How much Bondo would you like? YES.
Alfa 155. This is a winner!
Dang, so this is why my parts haven't shipped yet. 😅
Sure hope not... if you are waiting for parts though and customer service has not yet reached out - please email service@fcpeuro.com
Look this format.
Thought we would try something new with some longer form. Whole series will only be 3 parts
Is Mike Rowe narrating this?
Used to own this car. It was a tank, and with the 2.3L engine, it was as slow as one. This car needs no roll cage, it needs a 500HP engine.
What about both... 😁
@@fcpeuro-media IMO save yourself the weight of a second roll cage. A new C300 is a feather weight compared to the 190E and it definitely needs a cage, Did you guys ever compared the weight to see how much more steel did the 190E have vs a new C300?
Squeezing, bro where i am we get a v8 twin turbo in that merc
Building a mercedes 190E meanwhile showing real DTM footage of M3 E30s. hahahaha XD
Can't have one without the other! One of the best rivalries in motorsport history was the W201 190E and the E30 M3.
Fueltech
C63 amg not this peuny 4 banger. big ups for the restomod tho
I thought the same 😊
Ok big boy….
We promise, the W201 and the M133 are a match made in heaven. All of the power you could ever want, with the balance and weight distribution that a driver's car should have! Stay tuned and you'll see what we're talking about 😉
@@fcpeuro-media your choice makes total sense, I just meant that it's not my cup of tea; I'll use an m104 for mine in fact😊
Why did you ruin such a nice example for this project? This was good enough to restore.
Should have put in a 5 or 6 cyl diesel
No scanning, no solid works, no send cut send, just hand tools and skills.
5:11 doner sandwich
😬😎
Wouldn't really call it squeezing because you can fit bigger engines with no problem.
