I never seem to have any luck with technology, or modding my game files manually, which is why I always stuck to autoinstallers like Nexus, and a big reason why I wanted a steam deck in the first place, for its console-like PC gaming interface... but the temptation of modded skyrim on a portable was too strong, so I swallowed my fear and tried to follow along with your instructions, simple, precise, clear, easy to follow... and am a grown man weeping with joy to see the game working, in all its modded glory. Oh my goodness I wish I had found this video 3 days ago 😂 I tried so many methods to get my mods to work and I had to reset my Steam Deck 3 times. I followed this method and it worked! I am so excited to be able to play my same PC file Skyrim on the go. This is awesome!
This is a great help! One thing that took me a minute is how to get to .local. Based on the overlay in the video it looks like /local or /.local but for me the full path started with /home/deck/.local
Hey, this was a really easy tutorial and is definitely worth following. Thanks for making such an evergreen video! I had some technical issues, but that was more of a hardware issue related to the USB I was using, but after I figured that out and switched to a different one, it went swimmingly.
On the Witcher 3, I simply copied my "Mods" folder to my install directory on my Steam Deck, and it worked. I was hoping this would be the universally easy way.
Small tip: I decided to do a custom large mod list and followed this video's advice, mostly to the letter. I used vortex on my under-powered personal computer to just make sure the load order was good. 1) I used SKSE, but DID NOT rename it to the launcher until AFTER I transferred all the files to the deck. Vortex refuses to acknowledge that little workaround and thinks it doesn't exist. 2) Avoid SKYUI mods, mostly because the gamepad makes it terrible. The original menu layout works fine as it's most similar to the console. 3) I used the 2k shader mods, there's no reason to go crazy. 4) I avoided Open Cities. I could not get it to work *well* but YMMV. 5) If using CBBE and body slides, do those on the computer, then transfer them. The Deck doesn't have good mouse and keyboard. I instead used presets to avoid this. 6) Don't forget to rebind your keys and make your life easier! There are a ton of unique controller layouts. I use a customized FF14 controller style, where I press and hold L1, which creates new bindings for my letter buttons on the right pad. I then do that for R1, which means I have 8 equipped quick spells. Have fun!
I’ve been trying to find those two text files in the local c but I’m having trouble. I’m used to windows where it’ll have the c drive on the left side of the explorer window, but im not seeing it at all in linux even after enabling hidden files. Cam someone help?
So the main question no one seems to want to answer is if vortex has the mods in a different location than the Skyrim SE folder how do we transfer them to the steam deck?
The folder Vortex stores the mods are usually them in their compressed format, once they are installed they have been extracted and the files moved to the install folder.
I was able to follow this tutorial, but with Mod Organizer 2 and Explorer++ and it worked perfectly. My slow PC doesn't handle this very fast, but it was worth it. I added Explorer++ as launchable program in MO2, ran it with MO2, selected everything in the virtual game folder, then Edit>Copy to Folder to copy all the virtual folder stuff to folder that I then put in my flash drive.

To put it in steps: - For info on how to use MO2, there are TH-cam videos for this. - Add Explorer++ as a custom executable. - Create your profile setup in MO2. - Make sure SKSE is installed. - Run Explorer++ through MO2. - Select the Data folder in Explorer++ - Select Edit > Copy to Folder to copy it to the flash drive. - Then follow the rest of this video for moving it to the Steam Deck.
Can you do a Thorough video on how to install and mod oblivion on steam deck specifically please, I’ve had my steam deck for 2 weeks and haven’t even played it due to not having the mods on my game for oblivion and Skyrim mainly oblivion.
I have a problem and not sure if I'm the only one but I installed the mods via vortex and they were running perfectly in the PC. I then copied the whole game folder with mods and everything and pasted them into my steam games location. The game runs normally but the mods themselves won't load. I keep getting a message saying they aren't present. I saw this video and everything I did is almost identical minus the two text files he copies towards the end? Is that really the solution?
You can actually mod Skyrim alone one the steam deck if you just download a few things and mo2. You do have to open it a few times on desktop mode to get it set, but then you can play it pretty normal.

This method works for some mods, but not others. Some weapon mods won't load in or dialogue mods won't play on the Steam Deck, even if they work on the computer. Is there any fix to this, or should we just wait for the good people of Nexus to update it to work better with Linux?

Hey, I have two very thorough step by step methods on my channel for getting mods running on Steam Deck. One method like this where you move mods over from your PC and another method where you can set up Mod Organizer 2 on your Steam Deck so you can directly mod on there.
@@stretch5510 I had to use the 'Customize your dashboard' link (upper right side of vortex dashboard' and move the 'Tools' panel up to the top. After pressing 'Done', I was able to run the Skyrim Script Extender 64 from Vortex.
I have a problem, so I got all the mods I wanted, ran Skyrim on my PC and it was working fine. So I did all the steps, ran skyrim on my deck and it loaded the main menu, when I hit new game it cashes back to my library, any reason why?

Maybe you still have the special edition skse and the anniversary edition .exe in your game files. If that's the case you would either have to download the other ae version of skse or use a downgrade patcher.

Unfortunately, in your haste to give fast and easy instructions you were unclear about the two sets of files. You should have mentioned putting the Appdata files in a separate folder.

Another way is to just install windows onto a micro SD and boot that from the boot menu when you start the deck. Then you don't need to install windows on the deck directly but can still usr it on the go. Worked pretty solid with modded skyrim and fallout 4 for the last 2 months for me.
@@bigtoast4192 well its regular windows just like on any other pc. You can use the big picture mode of steam I guess. But you plobabrly can't launt skse through that. But you can just double tap the skse desktop icon with the touchscreen and once you are ingame you use the regular controls anyway
Putting windows on an SD card will wear it out super quick from all the write cycles if you just install as is, they're not built for that level of endurance like SSD chips are. You'll want to mount all the frequently written parts like log files, temp folders, etc to system RAM, and set your SD card to read-only until you need to make a change.
I thought I followed the directions but get a message "couldn't find TESV.exe" when I try to launch Skyrim on my deck and on my PC. Anyone know what I should do? 😭
probably a dumb question but I am completely new to modding ... Is there a reason that you have to download and install the mods on a windows version of the game then manually move them over via USB? Would it be possible to run Vortex on the Steamdeck desktop mode and install them directly?
I'm likely using wrong terminology here, and forgive me it's been a while since I've used it... Iirc In MY experience with FNIS, once you set everything on the PC itll transfer fine on steam deck. But if you need changes made or need to add other FNIS based mods, youll need to initialize it again on your PC first before transfering it over.
Mine crashes every time. I’ve followed instructions and it’s till not working (aside from renaming the files as the first time I did it I had an error message even after changing it back and I’ve read that that’s not an option anymore and you have to manually launch the skse itself.)

I got this to work using the normal version of Skyrim. But for some reason it doesn’t work for my Special Edition? It’ll load the mods but not the mod order, I can’t change it in-game because it won’t let me move SkyUI above anything else. Don’t suppose anyone has a solution for this? A lot of my mods require it unfortunately 😅 (Quick edit just to say I did run this perfectly on my laptop before transferring it to my steam deck, this is only a steam deck issue)
I don't know what I did wrong I followed everything you did but when I launch the game it just doesn't open. I tried multiple protons like excremental and the newer one but it just wouldn't open

For non SE players, the number for the file you need to put the text files in is 72850, or at least it was for me

Renaming the skse loader just puts me in an infinite load screen after the bethesda cog opening.

You have to start the game from its original launcher and youll see an options tab to change graphic settings.

I thought that vortex doesn’t install mod data in your game folder?
You forgot to add in Syncing options, automating the whole process through network

Ok I really tried this twice, and all the files are in the right places, but no mods activate when I start the game. Idk, but I am super frustrated.
Question: can one simply use a standard usb to usb-c cable to move the files or does it have to be a flash drive?

Will this method work with FNIS or BodySlide? Since those bake each time you boot, wouldn’t the steam deck need a localized instance of those .exe’s?
I'm likely using wrong terminology here, and forgive me it's been a while since I've used it...
Iirc In MY experience with FNIS, once you set everything on the PC itll transfer fine on steam deck. But if you need changes made or need to add other FNIS based mods, youll need to initialize it again on your PC first before transfering it over.

Mine crashes every time. I’ve followed instructions and it’s till not working (aside from renaming the files as the first time I did it I had an error message even after changing it back and I’ve read that that’s not an option anymore and you have to manually launch the skse itself.)

I got this to work using the normal version of Skyrim. But for some reason it doesn’t work for my Special Edition? It’ll load the mods but not the mod order, I can’t change it in-game because it won’t let me move SkyUI above anything else. Don’t suppose anyone has a solution for this? A lot of my mods require it unfortunately 😅
(Quick edit just to say I did run this perfectly on my laptop before transferring it to my steam deck, this is only a steam deck issue)

I don't know what I did wrong I followed everything you did but when I launch the game it just doesn't open. I tried multiple protons like excremental and the newer one but it just wouldn't open

I might not get an answer but I meed help for install mods for mass effect legendary edition on my steam deck. Installer needs to be there and I don't know what to do really
So I have Skyrim installed and it says on Vortx that the game is not discovered and hasnt been automatically discovered. How do I manually set the file and how do I make it do it automatically?
