Hardly anyone ever catches the newspaper headline in the opening scene “Attorney Christopher Chambers fatally stabbed in restaurant” that grown up Gordon is holding in his opening narration. The movie gives you the ending at the very beginning if you’re paying attention. Great story and great screen adaptation.

All 4 of the kids were fantastic. Corey Feldman, Wil Wheaton and Jerry O'Connell had good careers and are still acting. River Pheonix was destined for greatness before his tragic death. John Cusack and Kiefer Sutherland are household names.

Me and my girlfriend just started watching you guys, new fans. Just find it amusing we have an almost identical book collection 😂
But about this movie: I actually grew up about 5 miles from where the "castle rock" town is. In real life it's called Brownsville Oregon, they do a festival for the movie every year and the town is pretty much the same as it was then. At least main Street. It's one of my favorite movies of alllll time, maybe due to a little bit of bias but God I love this movie. ❤

The movie was released in August 1986.
All of the main actors became famous:
-Wil Wheaton in the tv series Star Trek:The Next Generation
-River Phoenix, (older brother of Joaquin) a major celebrity of the 80’s and 90’s and tragic victim of the drug scene, could have had a great acting career
-Kiefer Sutherland, (son of Donald) starred in many tv series and films
-Corey Feldman and Jerry O’Connell, both well-known in numerous tv series and films
-John Cusak, (brother of Joan) starred in many films, plus as a screenwriter, has received many awards
-Richard Dreyfuss, already an Oscar winner when this was made, starred in many major Hollywood classics (Jaws.)

I think one of the things I like most about this film is how ones perspective on it changes over time. For those of us who first saw it as kids you mostly just see it as a fun adventure. When you see it later in life, however, it really does call upon you to remember with nostalgia that coming of age period in your own life. The friendships you had, the experiences you shared, and how they continue to influence the person you've become..... such a great film.

Apparently in the book it's explained that Denny died in an "army" jeep accident. BUT It's always stood out to me that when Ace says Gordie must have some of his "brothers good sense" he never says anything negative about Denny. As crazy and crude as Ace is, this speaks volumes of the impression a type of person like Denny has on people. He's respected at the very least by even the town bully! Great reaction guys

The movie told you in the first scene that Chris was dead. It is the set-up for the whole movie.
I love this movie: it’s so well done and hugely nostalgic for me. I grew up in the sixties, in the eastern U.S., but the music, the kids, and their hijinks are exactly right. This is how it was. We never went on an overnight adventure like that, but we played in the woods and went on 5-mile bike rides starting at age 10. It was a different world. The bridge incident really gets me. We had a trestle, only about 50 yards long, but our big dare was to climb down the wooden girders and hold on as a freight train passed overhead. Sometimes they could be 100 cars.
I showed this movie to my daughter when she was about 12, telling her, “This shows the true spirit of boys at that age.”

We '80s kids knew Will Wheaton from Star Trek: The Next Generation, but this film really showed his acting chops! River Phoenix played young Indiana Jones at the beginning of The Last Crusade. Sadly, he died of a drug overdose in the early '90s, leaving a James Dean-like legacy because of his great promise as an actor. If he had lived, I have no doubt that he would have achieved similar recognition to his brother, Joaquin.

Yeah, Gordie could be seen as Stephen King's alter ego. He's said that the novella contains many autobiographical elements. The scene with the leeches was based on an actual childhood event, for instance. When Teddy is complaining about the end of Gordie's story, it might be a tongue-in-cheek reference to how some critics felt that Stephen King's stories tended to have weak endings. Thanks for checking out this great coming-of-age film!

Yes, jerks like that were more common back then. They got away with it more often. No cameras anywhere, and the older generation thought that learning how to deal with bullies was a part of growing up. You wouldn't get expelled from school over a fight, so you were expected to fight back and stand up for yourself. They called it "building character." It's one reason I started martial arts classes as a teenager. Now, as a father to two grown children, I'm very happy that my kids didn't have to deal with this kind mental and physical abuse on a daily basis.

When Gordy is telling the story about the pie eating contest the kid in the crowd that says, "Hey lard ass, how was your trip?" Is O.B. Babbs. He had some small roles in a few other things. Most of the movie is filmed near Eugene, Oregon. He went to a high school in the suburbs, Pleasant Hill. He was on their basketball team that my alma mater played in the state playoffs in 1988. I didn't know at that time that he was in the movie Stand By Me.

I always thought the scene where Ace played chicken with the truck was a precursor to the scene a bit later when they had the altercation and he had a gun pulled on him. You’re left to think that he wasn’t going to back down , even with the gun pointed at him , and you assume that scene was going to end a lot worse than it did.

10:52 This movie was set in 1959, I was the same age as these kids in 1977 and all though it was 18 years later the kids acted about the same. We were always outside without parental supervision. We had a lot of fun but we played hard, sometimes caused trouble or got into fights and if we happened to run into a group of older kids most likely they were going to hassle us or push us around. That was just the way it was but we had thick skin and learned how to deal with adversity. The problem with young people now is that they spend their time indoors staring at phones and have never learned how to deal with adversity so the instant something doesn't go their way they implode or if someone gives them a hard time they want to shoot them! You want a 12 year old to shoot a teenager dead because he pushed him around a little bit and took his hat?

It sad that Gordie Lachance's parents don't seem to care about him as if he was not planned and the dad made it clear his dead brother was there favourite and he was nothing to them and they would not be as upset if it was him that died

I still believe “The Stand” to be his greatest work. If you love Tom Hanks you should watch cloud atlas. I believe it’s a true work of art.

as has prob been said....in all fairness, the first scene of the film is old gordy reading the newspaper with the headline about chris's murder/death plastered across the front, which is why he wrote the story...he came a long way from the writing of the "lard ass type stories" days

river phoenix, chris, died at 23, absolute legend, so many good films he was in even dying that young....corey feldman, teddy, many great, goated 80's films as a kid actor, gooneis, lost boys, the burbs, now hes kind of a washed up kook, but he survived hollywood back then, itd traumatize & make anyone slightly insane.....will wheaton, gordy, didnt do much else after stand by me but has many guest apperances in the big bang theory tv show....jerry mcdonald, vern, hes done a bunch of stuff since , disappeared as kid actor & re-emerged a decade and a half later as a new thing, a handsome grown man actor & not a fat kid anymore....i cant remeber the stuff he was in, quite a bit tho...then the great jon kusack, in too many great films to name, high fidelity being one...& keiffer sutherland, chris's brother, was also in lost boys, & an f ton of other classic 80's things, still working, he was on the tv show 24

As a teen, Jerry O'Connell starred in the superhero TV series, MY SECRET IDENTITY. As an adult, he starred in the movie JOE'S APARTMENT (1996), and in the science fiction TV series SLIDERS.

Don't know why you thought this film came out in 2000, in came out in1986, I was still a kid then. That definitely was not Charlie Sheen playing Teddy who was already an adult by then. Teddy was played by then child actor Corey Feldman. It was never implied that Ace killed Gordie's brother, I never got that. In the short story that this movie is based on, his brother Dennis was in the army when he was killed in a jeep accident, still don't know why you guys came to the conclusion Ace caused. Good reaction though.

The book or the story written by Stephen King was called "The Body" Where at the end of the story they beat up Chris and Gordy and their friends
