You would really like hachi it's a dog's tail. Have some tissues if you watch it. Also, another good movie is shawshank redemption.
The thing is while it brought you to tears now, it should always bring you to tears and if it doesn’t it’s time to ‘change your perspective’
This is late, so you might not see it. But you mentioned you'd written some books. What are the titles? I also see you have Les Miserables on your bookshelf. That's one of my favorite books. I've read it five times. (Different translations each time.) Really enjoying your reactions to these films. I don't think all of them work as well as the books do (especially Half Blood Prince), but I still quite enjoy them.
Thank you so much :), I love Les Miserables I’m obsessed with it, I’ve never done any other translations though that’s so interesting. My book series is called the Divine Tragedy by S. Oliver Eldridge and the link is in the description, I self published both books but I don’t think that effected the quality -Oliver
@OliverandKylie Thanks! I'll look into them. Feel like I've read nearly everything worth reading at this point (gen x, and a voracious reader since age seven: 1977), and as a editor/proofreader I have little patience for grammatical errors (except when in appropriate character dialogue). You two seem both clever and empathetic and give me some hope for the future!
i'm tired sir boss...
This movie always makes me cry when everytime watching it.Thanks for reacting to this movie.'I'm tired boss' Rest in god peace brother Micheal clarke Dunken 😭😭😭
The biggest plot hole is that harry got bit by basilisk in the second movie so the horcrox should of been destroyed then
We are similar. Like you, I’m no better than a “5-6” Also like you, I captured a “9”- “10” lol I.e. your wife is Gorgeous! Lol
The episode IV wasn’t originally in the scrolling. It did say a new hope.
No one is a failure who has friends!!! On a side note, Mr Potter is Drew Barrymore's great uncle.
"That legitimately scared me" "I didn't get it" These two statements contradict each other. If it scared you, you got it! The Shining does not make literal sense, and anyone who tells you there's some secret code that leads you to a literal meaning does not understand the movie. The real sense lies in its themes, and the themes are open to interpretation. For some the film is about domestic abuse. For others it's simply about writer's block. For me the film is about gender roles, race, creativity, and how those things function in an increasingly consumerist society. It's interesting to me that while women love the film and are scared by it, it's men who are almost disturbed by the film - it gets under their skin. Personally I think this is because it makes them afraid of themselves. I could quickly tell watching this reaction that Oliver (like many people) has an innate fear of the uncanny. Such people are immediately freaked out by twins. Good reaction.
"Why did they have to kill Sirius? Are you serious? Seriously." I'm not sure they even registered that pun.
My family and I watch this every Christmas Eve. We regard it as an action Christmas movie. No need to pick one or the other. It's both. Also, Hans Gruber is the best movie villain EVER. AND yes, it WAS Karl. They don't explain it, but somehow he didn't die when he was hung and he got down.
I'm sure you were told already, but they didn't do this movie knowing it was have sequels. Everyone expected it to flop, even many of the cast and crew while they were working on it (probably not Lucas though) because sci-fi wasn't taken seriously and it was thought to be only for kids. The movie wasn't originally called "Star Wars: A New Hope," it was just called "Star Wars." They didn't change the name of it until after "The Empire Strikes Back" came out (maybe even later). Point is that Lucas had ideas for possible more stories, but this was made to be a standalone film. When it became a HUGE hit, Lucas put those ideas into sequels. He wanted this to have the feel of those old serials, like Flash Gordon, and that's why he started it with "Episode IV" to show that there was a lot of story before this and we're already in the middle of the action.
I was a 9 yo non-shaver then. Watched here in Cleveland.
Too bad you had to share an air pod and hear the amazing music and sound effects in mono. You miss out on a lot of the full experience.
Also Independence Day
You should also watch Stargate (the movie before watching the series).
Even in modern combat, many rounds are fired for each casualty. It's hard to be a sharp shooter when the targets are shooting back. Further, the Storm Troopers were trying not to hit the group. Just make it look like they were trying to stop them.
The story may well remind you of Eragon, Star Wars follows the classic story outline called the heroes journey. in which a reluctant hero is forced on a journey, gathers allies and has a mentor who typically dies. Obi Wan goes alone so he can use his force powers without the others getting in his way. What a bad ass, well Leia is one of the rebel leaders, so yes she is. IMO it was not just one day in which Luke lost his Aunt and Uncle, the space travel in Star Wars is not instant it takes some time to get places.
Now you can watch Hardware Wars and Space Balls. Oh, but you need to watch Alien (1979) before watching Space Balls so you can enjoy the ending.
It is Lupin.
If you want more Rickman I recommend watching TRULY MADLY DEEPLY.
Nice couple, but you miss bits, funny bits, romantic bits, in your editing. Pity.
If you do dive into this universe beyond the 6-7 movies mentioned, I would recommend you watch the Clone Wars before watching the “Sequel Trilogy” depending on your level of interest. The Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett, & Ahsoka would all be good watches too.
🙂
You noticed what makes SW special. Until that point all Sci-fi was new sets. SW created a lived in world that immersed us.
You need to watch Rogue one which is the one before a new hope
The Death Star has its own hyperdrive.😮
Dune influenced this film in many ways.
The original theatrical release did not have "Episode IV," jus the title "A New Hope." In the days before VHS, popular movies would have second runs. Episode IV was added for the second run.
Y’all should have started off with the Star Wars Prequel trilogy first
I wish we could take these reactions back to 1978 and show them to George so he could stop obsessing about his “unfinished movie” and just get on with writing the stories.
At the time Flash Gordon was very popular and was divided in Episodes, Lucas wanted to take advantage of that, he also said in an interview he wanted to give the impresión of a bigger story going on and you get to watch it from when things are already set in motion.
Star Wars was originally designed to be a standalone movie. The "Episode IV" title text was not added until it was re-released in 1981. They had planned to make two more movies if it was a big hit. If it was a big flop, they were going to make a low budget sequel using sets and props from the original to make back some money. That never-made low budget sequel was called Splinter of the Minds Eye, and was published as a novel. It was only during the making of empire strikes back that George Lucas got the idea of planning for a prequel trilogy down the road. He enjoys claiming that nine movies was always his plan, but all other evidence and testimony says otherwise.
Spoiler: "HOSTILES ON THE HILL" - A Bad Lip Reading of The Empire Strikes Back th-cam.com/video/JRAOdRq-1lw/w-d-xo.html
The main 3 you mean. The prequels are 💩
Low T guy gets girl above his level. 👍🏻
lol
Taking a shot likely helps cope with everything that happens in this movie lol.
Also, there was 7 horcruxes total, 6 by design. Splitting his soul in 7 doesnt mean 7 horcruxes since 1 piece had to stay inside his own body.
Great reaction you two! This was the one that started taking science fiction from failures at the movies to blockbusters. Lucas and Spielberg made this as a one shot movie, and they were so uncertain if it would do well that if I remember correctly they went on vacation to Hawaii, away from televisions, radios, and phones so they wouldn't have to hear the bad news and could just relax. While they were there, after making a movie about space serials they had grown up with, they discussed an idea about making a movie like the adventure serials they had grown up with, with perhaps a treasure hunting archaeologist chasing down iconic lost artefacts like, say, the biblical Ark of the Covenant? As I recall, they started with Episode Four because the middle trilogy had the most complete notes while the first trilogy (which became the prequels) and the later trilogy (which Kathleen Kennedy and Disney Lucasfilm just ignored completely and threw in the trash) were basically just an outline with a few sparse notes. So we started with the original Star Wars. Though it was just called Star Wars and not A New Hope. Lucas created industry behemoth Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), an FX juggernaut, just to make a lot of the technical FX for this movie. The shots of the X-Wings flying over the Death Star were actually overlaid film strips: one strip that was just of the background zooming past, another that was intermediate FX, other ships flying by or whatever, and the third that was the actor inside the shakeable X-Wing cockpit set, then all three overlaid to give the full scenic shot. They had many modelers building props, suits, droids, miscellaneous set and design pieces, everything. ILM became THE company to go to for prime FX for years afterward. The backstory to why the Rebels could find a flaw that the Empire didn't find was said to have happened because one of the lead designers of the Death Star, who was forced to help with the work by the Empire, was a very secret Rebel sympathizer who intentionally designed this weakness and leaked information about it to one of the Bothian spies that were mentioned in passing. Basically, the Rebels knew that there was an intentional flaw to make it easier to destroy the Death Star, but they had to search for it while the Empire knew nothing of the sort. The basic story about the Empire's weapons was that the manufacturers told the Empire that there were three components to weapons manufacture: they could be built fast, they could be build cheap, and they could be built to be good, but the Empire could only get two of the three. The Empire went for fast and cheap and expected that massive inaccurate fire would do more damage than a little accurate fire. Also, the Stormtroopers at this point were basically schmoes given a bit f basic training, some basic indoctrination, and then stuffed into a set of Stormtrooper armor and put on duty. Basically their weapons training was "Point that end in the enemy's general direction, pull trigger, repeat." There is also the point that Kylie makes: making a weapons grade laser, based on the early stages of work with lasers that I remember learning about when I was 9 and Star Wars was in theaters (thanks to my late father, a mechanical engineer who was interested in all forms of the hard sciences and had subscriptions to several scientific journals), lasers require focusing mirrors whose position needs to be exact to be accurate. Thus any bump with one's blaster could even minutely misalign the mirrors and make them either inaccurate or not work at all. There is also a theory that those who had some Force ability could unconsciously use it to make themselves more difficult to shoot. The theory is advanced because of the line when Darth Vader is having difficulty targeting Luke: "The Force is strong with this one." Obi-Wan's end gets explained in the next movie. Somewhat. 😛 Leia was an original bad ass woman hero and we all thought she was great. Even when in distress she was always searching for a way to get out, and finding it, even if it maybe was not an improvement, like the garbage compactor. People who think that movies were misogynistic with women who were just fainting damsels before the modern day movies of the last decade need to learn about Leia, Ellen Ripley, and Sarah Connor, among others. Carrie Fisher, Leia, had such a hard time acting opposite Peter Cushing, who played the villainous Grand Moff Tarkin, because Cushing was such a kindly and considerate man that Fisher had a hard time acting like she hated him when the cameras were rolling. And it may have been further aggravated by his wardrobe. When the wardrobe people were purchasing the various costume pieces, they accidentally bought Cushing boots that were not the right size. In fact they were small enough that they were painful to wear. Thus he only wore them for shots where they would be visible. Any other time and for any shot where they wouldn't be seen he was wearing comfortable house slippers. Now could you imagine being nineteen or twenty and having to say mean and spiteful things to a man who you liked and who has been very nice and friendly to you and is also wearing comfy house slippers? That couldn't have been easy. The version you watched was, of course, the remastered one where Lucas crammed in a bunch of crap that added nothing to the story and in some cases took away from it (my biggest gripe about that in a moment). Excess background clutter in shots like stormtroopers riding big lizards in the scene at the escape pod on Tatooine and the half dozen unnecessary entering Mos Eisley shots with extra droids, creatures, and other unnecessary garbage just to show what they could do with CGI and tech. The original was more minimalist, which I think was a better call because there was less background distractions that way. The extra 'splodey 'splosions look cool, yeah, but they don't really add anything of value either. The worst offense was seeing Jabba at the spaceport. We'd just seen the cantina confrontation between Han and Greedo where Greedo told Han that Jabba had put a bounty on him so big that everyone was gunning for Han. Then back at the spaceport CGI Jabba has come looking for Han to talk to him? No. If you've got every hitter out looking to get Han, you're not going to go find him yourself and then just talk to him calmly and listen to him sass you and take it like a chump. Jabba's a major crime figure, not a milquetoast pantywaist. No crime boss would let someone talk to him like that. It just makes Jabba look weak and ineffectual, which is why the scene was cut in the first place. And, in the original scene, the role of Jabba was originally portrayed by a rather portly human male and not a slug creature. And that's why Han called him a great human being, because he originally was a normal human being. There are other poor choices in the remastering of the trilogy, but this was always the most glaring to me. And, in the land of actor crossovers (not a spoiler), when Lucas and Spielberg did get around to making that movie about a treasure hunting archaeologist, Harrison Ford was not the only Star Wars actor who was used in Raiders of the Lost Ark. William Hootkins (side note: Hootkins? Wow. And I thought my last name was difficult to live with through my childhood and school years. Hootkins couldn't have been much easier...), who appeared in a brief speaking role in Star Wars as the ill-fated Jek Porkins, or Red 6, also appeared in Raiders as a pipe smoking plainclothes U.S. Army Major who sent Indy on his mission. I approve of watching the first six movies and Rogue One. I also think that watching the animated series The Clone Wars and possibly Rebels and the first two seasons of the live action Mandalorian are worth watching. Nothing else though. Also, in my opinion, Star Trek is worth exploring absolutely, starting from the beginning in the 1966-1968 series, especially the first and second seasons, and going into the first four Star Trek movies (from 1979-1986). There are lists of episodes around that are the must watch ones, but I could give you a dozen of my favorites to get you started instead of making you watch all 60+. 😛 Keep up the great work!
You should watch Troops. It is a SW parody and can be found here on YT.
Eregon is exactly the story of Star Wars.
I'm 67, watched it in 1977 with my late father at the Kine Centre opposite the Carlton Hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was amazing.....
I believe the reason for starting at Episode IV is because of cinematic episodic films that he watched as a child - many times he would come in the middle of a story, or that's how it started. I don't recall how it was exactly, but I believe that's why it's starts at four, to emulate those short films from his childhood.
