I got my first Postie bike on Friday. Picked it up in Auckland and transported home to Taupo, New Zealand. Your vids have inspired me for ages and finally I got one! I'm ordering a phone mount off Aliexpress and it's also got 12v USB plug too. Thanks for all your great videos and advice. Uploaded a video first steps in doing up my Postie.
I got one of these GUB mounts and attached a Ram Mount ball to the back of it (following your example). (By the way, the children of one of my nieces call me GUB, which for us stand for Great Uncle Bill.) I attached the holder to the handlebar of my brand new Honda CRF450L, placed my iPhone in the holder, and went for a ride. Part of the ride was on a section of 60-mile-per-hour highway. When I got off of the highway, I noticed near the end of the exit ramp that my iPhone had escaped. The holder was still there; but my iPhone was somewhere out on the highway. The good news is that my wife and I were able to find the iPhone right on the edge of the highway at the shoulder; and, it was OK, thanks to a LIFEPROOF iPhone case. I thought I had secured the iPhone in the holder; but, I am guessing that the vibration of the handlebar was too much for the holder to deal with. I will be using the GUB holder on my bicycle; and, for my CRF450L, I'll be going back to my Ram Mount holder (the kind with adjustable plastic fingers on either side and adjustable brackets at the top and bottom. I use an elastic hair band around the holder and the iPhone as a back-up to keep the iPhone in place.
I use a Rokform case and handle bar mount adapted to a RAM mount. Locks in with a 1/8 turn key lock. I hope this one holds the phone tight for those rough trails.
Security hex/torx bits... or can get a drill and make your own. Xgrips are good, was one of the first to market... now a few years have past and other designs have come to the front/gained popularity. As for the Quadlock, you can get the generic mount and just take it off redo the sticky and you are back at it, or you can get the case for your phone... they also do a Ram mount 1inch ball mount also, so you can add it to your ram setup.
Mark great product , I was also running the quad lock on my SWM 650 Superduel - they also have another problem and the rear phone catch or the mount lugs wears and the phone moves abit ! Silocane on mount cover can fix ( but not ideal )
That was brilliant how you put the two together, but saying I just whack that on there does not help me. How did you join the ram ball mount to the new Gub holder.
I just bought the ram holder for my bike, and after watching your video I thought I was going to have to do the same. Nope the arms on the ram mount do not hit my volume button (close but ok) thanks for you videos and your time.
Thanks Mark! I bought a couple this past weekend, one for me and one for the mrs. I’ve used the x grip as well, and really didn’t much care for the grip for off road (wheelies too, lol). I’d like to try getting a waterproof cell phone like the Kyocera and leave it on the bike with OSMAnd or similar. Cheers!
Great idea i have had a Gub phone mount but its restricted because of the mounting bracket, will be getting a ram mount now to modify it. Thanks Awesome idea.
hello mark love the videos . is that a thermometer on your head stem / bars .if so where can i get one from iv been looking every where till i saw yours . thanks mark
That tipped bolt is supposed tdo be tamper proof, but any discount tool store sells the bits as a kit, even I got a set. LOL I was listening to Midnight Oil's Beds Are Burning when you notifcation popped up.
I saw that holder yesterday evening on ebay. I thought "oh that red anodized one looks pretty good. But i dont need it because i got the X-grip" Now that you say ill consider buying one too
I use the quadlock system and it works fine but with anything it has it's positives and negetives . They are expensive and only plastic so i've found it wears a bit and starts to move around but still totally secure. This gub one look fairly solid but cheap . I wonder if the screw has a way of locking down or if it will vibrate open , hopefully over time you can let us know. Cheers 4 sharing sir.
Cheers for the review and the up close on your ram mount mod. The quad lock system is great but not a fan of the cases which do bulk up in the middle to contain the recess for the locking mechanism plus after a bit of use you do get play, allowing the phone to wobble a bit. Definitely think Ill get on off those GUB ones, though the one I initially came across was branded "Bikering".
Hmm, I've been running the X-Grip for years and it's perfect for me. Solid as a rock even without that rubber doodalacky on the back. No issues with volume keys either. I suppose that depends on where a particular phone has it's volume controls. Also seems to me that it's much quicker to do a quick pinch and release on the X-Grip than it is to twist a knob multiple times. Anyway, enjoyed the vid.
Yeah the hassle factor comes from putting the rubber thing on and also trying to not have the X-Grip rest on the volume button. If the above is not an issue then yeah it’s quick and simple! :-)
been on a debate and a long research on these phone mounts keep me thinking and thinking still haven't ordered anything people talking about the quad lock mount and say it wears off overtime and it is made out of plastic and on the other hand there is the rokform same concept with buying the phone case with the mount but seems to be the best in the market out there but i am glad how you did a little more and used the old ram mount to adjust the mounting position i hope it last you a long time and i guess i am just have to go with this 200 cad$ rokform mount cheers mate
Also remember to buy a special Screw Glue. You can buy it in soft, middle and hard. I recommend the soft one. Why? Vibrations will apear while riding (especially with Mountainbikes on uneven ground) you dont want any of the screws to slowly open up by themself. The softest version of screw glue allows you to still open the adjustments.
Nice video and a great idea with the RAM mount mod. How does it stick on high speeds? I am talking German autobahn no speed limits speeds of 130+ kmph.
Awesome, was looking for a good phone holder that's not an overpriced plastic thing that either requires to stick something on your phone or buy a phone specific case, they're all rip offs. This looks exactly what i needed, just ordered one
Great stuff mark 👍😀 don't worry about the rambling it's all good, I prefer it when you actually go through the stuff properly and show how everything works in real world terms 👍
That model is good for drag bars not for your bars straight bars only or you need a different Mount. Think before you buy or you end up spending hundreds on bullshit not needed
Hey Mark, great video as usual. Just an fyi on those "theft proof" bolts. Put the bolt in your vise or otherwise secure location and take a small punch and, at an angle, whack that little tit in the middle of the of the Allen head and it will fly off to never ever land and hey presto no more worries about having a wrench with a hole. Don't ask me how I know this as I am still on parole.
If you lose that Allen wrench your screwed!! I bought a used Grom with this Mount changed bars could not get phone Mount off because of that bull shit screw with the tit in it anti theft I guess!
No, you're not. If you consider yourself screwed because you don't have something that is available at literally every hardware store everywhere in the world then I hope you never attempt to ride a motorcycle on public streets.

Would love to know the specific parts of the ram mounts you used.

What is the circle plate with the ball called?
That allows you to rotate the phone in different directions and angles
Can u tell us how u mounted it??
I’ll see if I can find the stuff & do a video on how I did it! :-)
Security hex/torx bits... or can get a drill and make your own.

I wonder if it fits with a iPhone XR with a otter box case
Does the phone mount make a rattling noise while driving when the phone isn't inside the mount?
Yes It does! :-)
@@BikerBits thanks. Brilliant review btw
Do you have gelo effect in the video if want to record some video while driving?
Mark great product , I was also running the quad lock on my SWM 650 Superduel - they also have another problem and the rear phone catch or the mount lugs wears and the phone moves abit ! Silocane on mount cover can fix ( but not ideal )
Did the Ram mounts take any special fabrication to work on the GUB?
Just the right sized nut... that was it! :-)
So, Mark, are you now selling these on youre website?
No mate!
Great video and a great idea! Just how excatly did you mount the phone holder to the camera adapter plate?
where do you get that additional accesory for the gub holder?
Just search for RAM MOUNTS
That was brilliant how you put the two together, but saying I just whack that on there does not help me. How did you join the ram ball mount to the new Gub holder.
Sorry don't know how to explain by text will do a video! :-)

hello mark love the videos . is that a thermometer on your head stem / bars .if so where can i get one from iv been looking every where till i saw yours . thanks mark
Yeah I got it from Jaycar Electronics years ago, but they don’t have them anymore! A lot of people ask about that! :-)
@@BikerBits thanks heaps mark for the info .i cant read the name on the thermometer can you send it to me please

Security hex/torx bits... or can get a drill and make your own/wedge a flat head in and twist out.
Got one for Christmas it’s going on my crossbones still no clue what the rubber thing is for.
I saw that holder yesterday evening on ebay. I thought "oh that red anodized one looks pretty good. But i dont need it because i got the X-grip"

hi mark great video just wound like to no what tank bag you use

Wolfman enduro
did you have any issues with the screw backing out due to vibration?
No not at all! :-)
@@BikerBits thanks for the reply, I just ordered one.
Great video! Was that a ram camera Mount plate, attached to your phone holder?
Yes!
@@BikerBits Great!! I ordered all necessary pieces, for the same setup. Seems like the most logical way to go. Thanks for the great idea!!
How well does it hold up on vibration of the motorcycle does the screw start to loosen up while you drive ?
No not at all... I'm still using it! :-)

Will certainly let everyone know how it goes over time! :-)
Yeah but does that screw come loose while riding.
No! 👍
My hp back casing still hv o ring attach.. can it still b insert to d phone holder
I have no idea mate... Sorry!
😊😊😊😊😊
Looks like a great bit of kit Mark thanks for sharing 👌👌
I can’t find the ram attachment

How is it holding up now a days ?
Seems you had a good experience with this system - but reviews on Amazon say it can vibrate loose - did you have any issues? Ta
Yeah I loved it and it never loosened on me! :-)
@@BikerBits cheers for the reply. Sounds like a goer!

Thanks Mark, I must get one of those for the bike. Keep on Ridin an Ramblin.

Ramble on Mark, we love you out here👍
Gub now makes a "G-91" series which has a USB port in the base... I'm running it. Keep your phone charged while you ride.
My order from FleaBay just came in today. Thanks Mark!

Yeah doesn't move at all... Speed or rough dirt roads! :-)
