I'd say jazz & classical musicians are much better than the average metal musician generally, in terms of music theory & other important knowledge. However, when it comes to tech death with bands like First Fragment, Obscura, Spawn of Possession, etc, I'd say they're much better than the average jazz (and classical if you count the average joe who plays classical) musician. A lot of tech death musicians have studied classical and/or jazz though. They're leagues ahead most jazz & classical musicians when it comes to pure technical skill, as I haven't come across a lot that rivals tech death in that specific regard. But who gives a shit? All three genres are awesome.
