  • This is the teardown of my failed EA888 1.8T Generation 3 revised design for the 2015 Golf to find the route cause of failure at 87K miles. In the video I mentioned 79K which is incorrect, slip of the mind.

    Wow amazing. Stuff like this is the best of automotive youtube. I have a 1.8T ea888 gen 3 in my passat. So far no issues at all at 40k miles. It's mesmerizing to see the engine my car has torn apart. It looks very hard to do and hundreds of bolts and screws involved. Is everything an engine out procedure on this engine?

  • @paulhealey6320
    @paulhealey6320 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This engine did not die from ring failure .the marks on the bore were from water sitting there for a while, more likely a gasket failed causing coolant to go into the cylinder, probably could have been saved if caught earlier. Bearings looking mint

      This wasn't meant to suggest this was an unreliable motor with my singular example, I was highlighting how VW didn't offer assistance at such a low mileage failure on a CPO since it is an exception. This is why I will not be purchasing a VW in the future, previously I've owned a Golf TDI, GTI, and lastly this TSI.

    Four years ago had a misfire while driving. thought i could make it home from work. it stopped turning over when i tried to leave the job. battery was good. after taking off the head, the intake valve was broken into three pieces and the valve seat crushed into the head. this was due to the valve spring braking allowing the valve to fall into the cylinder. the valve gouged the cylinder wall and cracked the number four piston. this is a rare failure but found a few forums of VW owners who also experienced this issue on the 1.8 tsi gen 3 as well.

    I beat the hell out of my 2015 1.8t. Mustve been an anomaly type failure. Ive heard if these engines were assembled in mexico opposed to germany they have a lot higher chance of going to 200k miles or more which sounds like the opposite of how it should be

    I just replaced the engine in my 2014 passat 1.8t. Two valves were burnt, and I found a very low mileage for cheaper than the cost to do the valves. Not sure how it happened, but I understand these engines to be very good. Just some bad eggs in the batch I guess.

    I believe you had over fueling or a head gasket failure letting coolant into the 1 cylinder. Rings stick all the time from carbon and soot. They usually won't give you the issues you found.

    These engines are known to have oil leaks. And oil changes intervals are too long. I change it arround 7000-8000 kms instead of the 15 000 suggested by vw. When the oil gets old, it has a tendency to burn easily. I got 161 000 kms and i check oil often. If you dont take care of it, it will break. They’re reliable, but not as solid as 90’s japanese cars.

    • @MarkMethods
      @MarkMethods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's probably where I went wrong, I try to listen to the factory manual but looking at these wimpy oil wipers on the pistons and high consumption of oil; I'm surprised more of these don't fail under VW's recommendations.

      How much is the oil consumption on your engine and what oil you use?

  • @darrionsmith5230
    @darrionsmith5230 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why would this engine be consuming oil?
    My oil has decreased like 3 quarts in 300 miles.
    Do you know of any common issues with that??
    Everything underneath is bone dry, however I noticed oil around my spark plugs (the white part)
    So I assumed valve cover gasket. However no oil is leaking underneath or on top of the engine (that I can see) hoping to figure out why it’s consuming so much oil and hope it’s an easy fix.

    • @MarkMethods
      @MarkMethods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's excessive consumption but it must be going somewhere; there are UV dye kits you can add to the oil to help identify where it's going if it's leaking; if it isn't ending up on the ground it could be getting consumed but at that rate you'd have ruined the catalytic converter pretty quick. How long has this been going on?

    • @darrionsmith5230
      @darrionsmith5230 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarkMethods i just got the car used.
      It seems to run fine. No odd noises.
      If I did use the dye, where should I look engine wise? Turbo? What are the most common things?

    • @MarkMethods
      @MarkMethods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would look around the timing cover, oil cooler up front, oil pan seal at the bottom, and around the splash shield at the bottom with the UV light to see if anything is glowing to help identify the source.

      New piston rings never hurt anybody either. I dont know what kind of records you have for the car but this just sounds like maintenance like regular oil change with OEM oil was neglected by the last owner leading to scoring of the cylinder, piston ring failure, blow by and other issues.

  • @jaymcnaughton8368
    @jaymcnaughton8368 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The two things that i know go bad with this engine are the timing chain jumping time and the intake valves carbon build up. Unfortunately you did not seem to even look at those problems. I am sure you did but you neglected to put it in the video. I am sure your diagnosis is correct but i would have liked to have seen the valves and checked the timing of the cams.

    • @MarkMethods
      @MarkMethods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those are both great points I should have gone deeper; timing never skipped (no kiss marks in the cylinders). I will note, those valve were crazy carbon'd up and should be cleaned once every 100k if I was running this engine again. I still have a majority of this engine in my garage, if there's enough interest I can dig into what's left. I started getting nervous due to the 20 minute long video and probably cut too much of my discussion and commentary out.

    • @MarkMethods
      @MarkMethods  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like the rebuild might not have been setup correctly, piston rings may not have been seated causing smoking and compression loss or head gasket failure. A lot of things could be wrong in this scenario.

      Piston ring failure due to low oil, 10k oil change intervals on motors that consume too much oil is a bad design and bad guidance by VW. Check your oil levels between changes and expect a quart or more to be gone as these go up in miles.

      For the money I'd be considering a Prius or a 2017+ Camry; if it's a commuter and you want the least amount of maintenance I'd vote Prius. If you end up with a VW, make sure to monitor oil levels and keep them topped off between changes due to consumption.
