I’m searching for a pair of senior dogs for my mom within 500 miles of Salt Lake City, Utah. Her ideal dogs would be a mom/daughter combo pit bull sized (she likes them big to keep her warm at night because she heats her house with a wood burning stove and it gets chilly in the winter). She’s on a rural setting with a fenced yard and cats. Please anyone message me if you hear of anything like this.

I volunteered at a shelter once and there was a girl who started the same time I did. There was this one dog that looked familiar to her. She then realized that it looked exactly like her friend’s old dog that they had to leave behind when they moved. She called him by his old name and he reacted to it better than the one he had at the shelter. It was him and she adopted him.

Unfortunately some people come across circumstances like being homeless, becoming ill/disabled or not being able to care for the dog. I hope I never have to make that choice about any of my pets. It is very sad. Some people have their pets taken from them, especially the homeless or disabled if it is decided that they cannot care for the pet. :( I am disabled and at risk of being homeless right now and would rather die than have my pets taken from me.

I adopted my dog in my pfp a literal day before she was set to be euthanized because she was abused and terrified of people. She was deemed 'unadoptable'. Instead, her shelter foster drove her 1,800+ miles to me (with other dogs) and I'll have had her for six years in April. She's still really skittish but when she's home? She's the biggest, dopiest, old lady I've ever had. I'm so thankful I found her online.

@@littleripper312 that sounds just like here in Sweden. My colleague bought a puppy for 30k (about $3000). I paid 8k for my rescue dog.
We don’t really have stay dogs here as far as I know. Dogs might get lost or run away, but once they’re found they’re taken care of.
My rescue came all the way from Ireland. He’s the most wonderful dog you could imagine. He was left at a kill shelter as a puppy because he’d grown into the teenage phase and the original owners couldn’t handle him. From there he went to Husky Rescue Ireland, and from there to me.
He’s cuddled up against me in bed right now. Can’t imagine how anyone would give this boy up, but their loss is my win.

I remember adopting my dog Mya during an adopting event at the pet store. Sad thing was she was 2 years old, alone in a cage while 15 puppies were in the open playing around and drawing all the attention. With her head down and just giving people her puppy eyes the best she could no one really paid any mind to her. After talking to my wife and pulling the money from an ATM I went up and signed the paperwork and everything. She was full of energy and joy when I walked her around the store for the first time.
Still have her with me now after two years. She is a great dog and despite the odds she got adopted instead of the puppies hogging the attention of everyone.

@@Unethical.Dodgson This. I'm thinking specifically of elderly people who have to go into assisted living and don't have families nearby or involved, or that story about the dog that was surrendered by a soldier who was later killed in action that's been making the rounds. In that case, the shelter had agreed to keep the dog until they got word from his CO's that he'd been killed. I think it's terrible that people just abandon pets too, but that's not always the case, and better they be given a chance at a new life than those who just leave them by the side of the road, like a video I recently saw, where the owner dumps the dog and its stuff and drives off with the dog chasing the car.

While I agree that a dog is supposed to be with you for life, we do not know the people personally, things may have happened that changed their life and so we shouldn't shame others for deciding to give up their dogs. It's equally painful for them to let go but giving their dogs to shelters is the best thing to do. They are putting the dogs needs and happiness above their own.
We shouldn't judge because we don't know what their situation is. If anything, it's nice to see that some people give their dogs to shelters like the shelter in the video to help the dog find a new home instead of leaving their dogs on the side of the streets to fend for themselves

I would like to adopt but most shelters neuter and spay their dogs. I don't want my dog to be mutilated and to feel like shit because their biochemistry is completely out of whack. Dogs shouldn't need freaking hormone replacement therapy to not feel like crap when they get older. In male dogs it leads to degenerative problems with their bones and connective tissue. The reasons they give for it being beneficial to health are pure BS. Oh, a male dog might get prostate cancer? Wow you mean like every single mammal does 100% of the time if they live long enough? Seriously. Every single male mammal gets prostate cancer assuming they live to old age.
I've watched it happen with my own eyes. My dog was 1 of 9 in his litter with 4 other boys 10 years ago. All the boys beside him were neutered and now they're all fat, lazy and have back problems. All symptoms of being a hypogonadal male. My dog is still an athlete and he loves to run and exercise, despite being a senior dog.

We adopted a senior dog in 2020 and it was something I was uncertain about mostly because the dog was small but was 13. I don’t know how much time we have with her but she is one of the best dogs we’ve ever had. My mom works at a shelter as the purchase coordinator and she just happened to walk through the surrender clinic and saw these people surrounding this dog they had for 11 years simply because they didn’t want her anymore. That really struck a cord with all of us because a month before that we had to say goodbye to a dog we had for 11 years. Honestly it feels like we’ve had this elder dog for longer than two years she has fit in with our life so much!! I’m really glad we’re going to give her the best last years of her life

The owner never claimed him despite the fact that the daughter knew he was there. They just left him there. The shelter knew that no one would adopt this dog. So they contacted me and asked if we would be willing to give him a home to live out the rest of his days. We agreed to take him and they did not charge us an adoption fee. So we basically are providing him hospice care for however long it is. We have been able to put some weight on him because his ribs were showing. And despite the fact that he is so old he really is doing very good. His name is PawPaw. And he gets to do whatever he wants. He pretty much just eats and sleeps. Excellent shelter, all should be run with people who truly appreciate how special dogs are. They have emotions and feelings, just like us. There are some circumstances where I understand having to bring your dog to a shelter, but for those who are just not in it for the long haul, you shouldn’t have a dog to begin with. They become family, and families should stick together. I’m glad that many more people are starting to recognize this.

@@audaxfemina Actually, as a dog trainer, I'd love to grab them all! We tend to have a *lot* of Pitties in our shelters, because the backyard breeders can make money with AKC papers. Then they end up in basements, yards, shelters, fight rings, streets, and sometimes loving homes. One breeder I was working with, to try and turn him around, was considering Kangals, which make Pitties look like Toy Poodles.

I have a very hard time at a shelter, I want them all. Every dog deserves a good home and to be loved and spoiled.
