I have an SS14 that I mowed with forever. I said when it got to 50 years old I would retire it from mowing. Now I mow with a Hustler zero turn. The Briggs 14 needed a rebuild. After looking up the parts price of a rebuild , I went with a Predator 212 repower. The Predator repower was a hit. It uses a fraction of the gas , with all the power. I did add a big heavy pulley on the outside for more inertia. Sometimes when you let off the clutch too quickly it would kill the 212. That extra pulley solved that issue. She still gets used hard without the mower deck ,, pulling wagons , wood splitter, plowing. Other than the engine being used up , the only thing that needed replacement is the tie rod ends for steering. I simply drilled through them , and used 3/8" grade 8 bolts. It's not that I'm too cheap to do it right, they would fail in the middle of some task. That was years ago , and the bolt hack isn't showing where. I do have replacement tie rods , but as long as the hacks hold up she just rides along. Also have a Sears Custom 8. The engine was bad on it when it rolled in. It was repowered with a Greyhound ( pre Predator Harbor Freight engine). I use it for true abuse work. It has solid forklift tires on the back with chains. They are super heavy. It pulls trees out of tight woods. It is ugly , but just keeps on going. It has welds all over it , from when I need some homemade attachment for a temporary use , then cut it off. Like a buz saw , or a cane fodder cutter (all homemade). And other stuff it's powered. Plus with just a decent size cart or trailer, they make a great utility vehicle for acreage upkeep.
I started collecting suburbans two years ago and now have 7 David Bradley tractors and 20 later Sears Suburbans. Iam having a real love affair with these tractors and dreamed of owning one as a kid while looking through the big Sears catalogs

The DB tractors were '59 through '65 with Briggs motors.
Roper started building for Sears in '66 and continued through 1980 with the suburban line although Electrolux company bought Roper in 1978.
1981 was the ugly era of the Sears now called Craftsman, still decent tractors, but many had the variable drive and you did mention the FF series.
In 1988 Husqvarna bought out Electrolux and then it became AYP which we know how that turned out with the box store lawn tractors.
The big model changes with the Roper tractors were seen in 1971 with the 14 Briggs and 72 15 briggs. Besides a small production run in 1978 with a Briggs twin in a GT16, all the 66 through 1980 had Tecumseh singles or Onan twin engines.
1973 was a big design change as Sears cheapened the grills as they went fiberglass ( just my opinion, I have 5 to rebuild). You then had the ST12's that kept the flathead Tecumseh, the ST16 which was the new overhead valve Tecumseh 16hp and the SS16 which was Onan twin. They also added an SS 18 in '75 I believe. 1977 had its own badging, 16/6 single, 16/6 twin and 18/6 twin.
1978 Sears went to the GT badging and tractors were painted black/silver. They still had the Tecumseh OH18, but most were Onan 18, 19.9 and then the big block N52 20hp.
The FF tractors ran 1981 to 1983
and came in 18, 20 and 24 hp model, full hydro. I am lucky, my FF24 is loaded, front/mid PTO and a dual speed rear PTO along with hydro mid lift and rear Cat0 3pt, but man is the ole girl got a drinking problem. They should've added power steering though, they do not turn very well.
Dont forget, Sears did make the compact/custom lines also, those has basic same rear frame and axles, but front frame was 2" shorter and front axle was lighter duty.
Sears also could be considered the grandfather of garden tractors, they made the Tri-trac and the handiman tractors in early 40's.
They are affordable GT's that can be a lot of fun. They turn great, but are a little light for some work.
With that said I have a dump bucket, multiple snow plows, rear tiller, and my old 16/6 has plowed quite a few acres of field. Maybe some day I'll get the other 8 I have restored....saving them for retirement LOL.

Awesome video! The older Sears are true workhorses! I think the only item that costs 6 times as much as a garden tractor that makes it do 6 times more work is a front end loader. I wish Sears and other companies like Kwikway and Ark manufactured more loaders in the garden tractor era so they would be more common today today and not so pricy on the used market. Have you ever owned a front end loader on a garden tractor before? If so, how did you like it? Best,

Did any of those Sears tractors, like yours, come in hydrostatic drive. ? I don’t know much about Sears older tractors other than what I’ve seen on you tube. Defiantly a great tractor from what I’ve seen.

Thank you sir 🙏Great memories for sure. The FF series I mentioned were hydrostatic. They also offered a hydrostatic version of the SS12 and SS14 called the Hydrotrac 12 and Hydrotrac 14.
