Known by his Wingtip shoes and Goodyear hat, Dave Marcis moved down to Asheville NC from his home in Wisconsin in 1969 to pursue the dream in NASCAR racing. Today we ride with Dave over to the brick building his race cars called home for almost 20 years for his first time back inside since 1987! After that we head over to the shop he built in 87 and used until retirement in 2002. Inside he has many relics of the past including Chrysler Hemi parts, raced used RCR Dale Earnhardt parts, and untouched Chevy SB2 race engines from 2002!

This is the most classic NASCAR history lesson to be had. Dave Marcus was very respected for his work and his knowledge. A true gentleman and the greatest illustration of what one man is capable of.
When Dave's talking about the GM Hemi distributor, he mentioned Jim Ruggles. That was my father. Thank you, Dave Marcus.
He definitely helped Dave when he needed it most. Obviously,know nothing about your father or you,but usually “ birds of a feather flock together “. That being said,I’m guessing you guys are spectacular in your own right.

@joshalger6059 Yes, he was. Did a lot factory development for Buick. I worked with him on those V6's in the late 80's.
Dave Marcis was a good friend of Dale Earnhardt's and Richard Childress and he would often test for Dale and even get in some cars before Dale even hit the racetrack in them, he even tested the winning Daytona 500 car for RCR. In exchange they would give him parts and sometimes even a car to race. Dave even had Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet as a sponsor for a race. Dave Marcis also got Kerry Earnhardt to make his Cup debut so Dale would be able to race his sons in Michigan. Dave is 82 but he knows more about race cars than anybody.
That relationship is probably the only way Dave kept going for so long.
That and IROC. He says IROC kept him going
@@Stapleton42 Yes he also tested IROC cars. He tested the Dodge Avengers and the Firebirds.
He got more out of a little than any driver i ever knew. He'd show up at the races sometimes and had to ask for volunteer crew and still would manage a top 10. I grew up in Hendersonville, NC and remember going to his shop to say hello and my father who built his drive shafts at IMS Asheville would re supply him and we would all get a cheeseburger cross the street. Always spent time to talk with me. A living legend who will always be remembered as a tireless worker who was a perfectionist, he had to be just to keep up and pay for the racing. Great man indeed!

Dave is a legend and deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame. I mean 33 consecutive Dayton 500's.
When I hear the words "Realtree Chevrolet..." I immediately think of the 71 car that Marcis had in the early 2000s. This is a class act that needs a Hall of Fame spot.

I respect this dude far more than most of the "superstars". This guy came from nothing. He worked. And worked his ass off. Deserves far more respect and recognition of the industry. I dont follow the HOF, but he should 107% be in it.
This man is a true legend! One of the last independent drivers who could do it all on his own cars. As a 16 year old me and my buddy had a chance to meet him and get his autograph numerous times..but one of the best memories was talking with Dave on a Friday in between qualifying..we found him sitting at his hauler eating a baloney sandwich and a coke soda. He finished 4th that year at Riverside International Raceway January 1975.. in his bad ass Dodge. He was absolutely a gentleman and made us young teenagers feel very special. Just a down to earth guy. I'll never forget how he treated us especially since we weren't even allowed in the pits..but back then it was quite easy to sneak in.
He is a throwback to a time long ago. Always rooted for Dave to run well. It's a shame that he didn't get more help than he did. Guy is still sharp as a tack!
I don't think these videos will be truly appreciated until we lose these legends one day. These stories wouldn't be heard without you.
A sad reality I agree with you on... Taking advantage of the present is the closest thing we have to a time machine. That is why we prioritize the older legends
@@Stapleton42I’ve said it before but this is incredible work that you are doing with these history videos of all these guys.
There needs to be more stories about people like Dave, no matter what they kept on doing what they loved to do - race cars. The younger generation has no idea the kind of drive and determination it took in those days just to be able to get to the track never mind work on the car and win. They only had their expertise learned by trial and error, you can't go to school and learn that. Keep these kind on interviews happening before all these legends are truly gone.

I could listen to Dave Marcus for hours talk about nascar back when it was bad ass to watch. It’s pretty cool he took the time to show how he got started in racing.
I used to pass by Dave's old shop several times a week back in the 70s and early 80s was always amazed by what he accomplished out of the building he's one of the smartest guys racing thanks for all the wonderful videos 😊😊😊

Good stuff again, Mitchell. Dave tested Big E's cars more than Dale did. He really trusted and loved Dave. You know we love Dave and Helen very much. Dang, he doesn't ever age, does he. What a great Ambassador for the sport. And YES, I think Dave should get back in a car. Tim's been trying to get Dave and Red Farmer on any track. I hope it happens. Excellent show with Uncle Dave.

Dave could confirm this, but according to my memory, there was a factory nearby (Custom Packaging) that Dave approached for help with storing a car that they were testing for Dale. Also, I believe the plant manager who was in my family let them use space in the back of the plant to do promo photos for the Olive Garden car. I still have the promo card that Dave gave my family as a thank you.
I believe if you could get that man in a car, he would still be tough today. One of the great legends of NASCAR.

Mitchell - this is a great video! I never knew that the building on Brevard road have been Mr. Marcis' shop. I am an automotive historian in Asheville and work at the Estes-Winn Car Museum here in Asheville. There is some incredible NASCAR history here I would love to share with you guys next time you are here. I also lead history tours of Asheville in a 1923 Ford Model T that was build by Larry Ingram. I’m from Wisconsin and growing up in the late 60’s, and early 70’s he was always in the conversation around the local tracks as to how he was doing down South.Mr Marcis was a throwback who raced for the purse to pay the bills,not like most corporate racers today. Dave Marcis is a true racer and a good example of never give up doing what you love. He worked just as hard as the top names in the sport while being an independent team owner/driver. One of my favorite underdogs and it was pretty cool to see him lead a lap in the 2000 Winston 500 at Talladega. He put the #71 Chevy out front early in the race under green. Great tour around his race shops. Excellent video Stapleton42. 👍

WOW MITCHELL!!! You hit a another home run! Dave is a legend. He has so much knowledge because of his background working on all his own stuff all these years. I think its a Wisconsin thing, with the work ethic and the drive to race as much as he did. You have only scratched the surface on Dave and really his Wisconsin connection. I grew up and lived only a mile from the Marcis farm north of Wausau, and know many family members, crew, and fellow competitors from the golden age of stock car racing here. I must say this: Why is he not in the hall of fame? Look at the stats. But more importantly, people like him helped build the sport. He is a role model.

@@Stapleton42 Dave was the first one I remember from Wisconsin to compete at the cup level. Followed by Dick Trickle and many others including two Champions, Alan Kulwicki and Matt Kenseth. Dave truly was a pioneer.
Having him in the HoF would diminish it. Numbers should matter.

I'm from Mt. Olive NC, and 73 years old. I still watch NASCAR, enjoyed many races watching Dave Marcis . The independents used to put on a good show fighting to gain a few spots in the middle of the pack and he was one of my favorites. In 1998 or 99 l was planning on going to Daytona the following year and I had a Marcis flag made from a lady who used to work for a company in Albermale NC who had moved to Mt. Olive. I got her to make one of him sitting in his car. I had her to embroider a pair of WINGTIPS next to the bottom of the drivers seat and he was sitting in the # 71 car. Unfortunately l had health problems and haven't been able to get back to a NASCAR race since then, but l still have his flag. Kept it in storage and it still looks like new. Always admired Dave and J D McDuffie from Sanford,NC. Wish I could have gotten to Daytona back then so l could have shown my flag off. It is a one of a kind. Since then I haven't been able to go back to a NASCAR race but I did enjoy them. Nothing and I mean absolutely nothing like being in person sitting on Chicken Bone Row when those drivers fire up and come flying by you. I still remember the smell of the burning rubber and the noise from the engines. Sweet music ❤

There was a tire shop in Asheville that Dave use to get tires from through Goodyear. The owner was a family friend that my dad would do mechanic work for. One day in the early 2000’s Dave came through there while I was there and gave the owner pallets of Gatorade. Dave and the owner were good hunting buddies, and would regularly go back to Wisconsin on hunting trips. I got to talking to Dave and the owner (I was maybe 12) and they took me rabbit hunting in Asheville. Fast forward to 2021 and I was at a bojangles at 630 AM to get breakfast in Asheville before work, and I had seen Dave eating by himself. I stop and said something, and he remembered me. Out of all the old racers I’ve come to meet, he was always to most humble.
I remember during the tire wars there was a a shortage of tires became an issue during a race - NASCAR was confiscating tires from teams who were out of the race - Dave Marcus was sitting on top of a stack of tires smoking a cigarette - ESPN interviewed him and Dave said "these tires are mine - I bought these and I'm giving them to Earnhardt - " It was awesome -

I am 61 and LOVE your history lessons. I am from a road racing and short track background. My Dads toy in the 80's was a street legal can am car that is now vintage raced. It was a nice car and still is. I got some pics off of the internet and it is still really nice.

Him and Dale had a great relationship too..Dave didn’t have money like a lot of the teams had and Dale was always giving Dave loads of used but still good parts and helped Dave be able to be able to keep running and afford to race
Being in the UK I know relatively nothing about Nascar. But these videos you're making are simply fantastic. I'm learning loads and love all the comparisons of all the old workshops.
My grandfather told me a story when Mt grandparents were traveling with Dave and Helen in the 50's. Dave raced a train to cross to beat it across the road. They never went any place with him again.
Mr. Marcis got the most out of what he had. Truly a remarkable person and I can only hope to be as spry and sharp as he is when I reach his age. Thanks for shooting this video, such history and you even uncovered those awesome IROC wheels and that distributor! And to think that Dave is only 22 years removed from his last Daytona 500 in 2002, plus the fact that his career spanned over five decades. Wow!

Out of all the Greats of Nascar past, Mr Marcis is by far at the top. Longevity and nobody really had much negative to say about him, goes a long way in my book.

Absolutely priceless. I tuned into nascar in 1995. I was a CART fan. I followed these small teams religiously. The money teams were suppose to win (their stories bored the hell out of me) so It was way more enjoyable to root for and watch teams like Dave's have a good day here and there. Thanks a ton for this.
You are absolutely correct Mitch, Dave is an awesome human being. Got to meet him while at Wilksboro for a Late Model Stock Race companion to the Cup Race in 1990. Met him at the hotel one evening, he was in the room above ours. He had to make some corrections for some drunk shenanigans just outside our hotel door. Funny how a full beer landing on one’s head seems to ring one’s bell enough to detour said shenanigans, but he didn’t mind dropping a few off the balcony to help them dunk,folks make a decision to move on somewhere else. First time we ever got to meet Dave…..wouldn’t have had it any other way 😂😉…..phenomenal human being……just good down to earth man & hell of a racer.❤

I live 15 miles from Bangor WI. Wehrs is famous here. It's only 5 miles from La Crosse Speedway 5/8 mile. Dave ran a a lot of races here. Oktoberfest weekend brought in all the top drivers in the day. Last race I was a NASCAR official there was fest, and Natalie Decker was racing a Mid American stock car. Trickle was there and had a race named after him. Great hearing stories about this place I now call home.
Awesome. I met Dave after the nascar dega race in 95 or 96. He burned a piston and fell out early. He was pumping gas in his car at gas station. I was only person on our bus who noticed who he was. He was super nice....
I met him when I was a teenager outside of Atlanta Motor Speedway. He was so nice to me. He gave me and my dad his realtree hats. They were sponsoring him that weekend, and I always appreciated that. My dad wore that hat for 10 years. I'm so happy to see him doing well.

But we still always knew about Dave and the others like Jimmy Means & JD McDuffie. It's beyond cool to see and hear their stories from them when you have the opportunity to bring then to us. Great video, puts his level of dedication in perspective..... Imagine Dave and his family living in a single wide trailer his entire career racing NASCAR. Such a divide compared with NASCAR drivers today..... the people that built this sport gave everything and spent everything they had.... because they loved racing..... how many drivers today would be willing to live like this?
A true legend and a genuinely nice guy. Got to spend a lot of time with him at Back to the Fifties quite a few years ago. He was even kind enough to sign the dash in my 94 Impala SS that weekend.

Fantastic video,,Imagine the worth of all those parts. Mr Marcis is one of the best. The story of He and the guys having to drive home while others were already home in bed really tells a story.
It's likely that I worked on those 3 SB2's at about the 26 minute mark. I worked at Performance Technology for about 4.5 years in the late 90's early 2000's. The phone number for the shop is on that white board with a 219 area code. I recognized those engines right away with the grey paint from Niles chemical. Dave would send all of us in the shop more cash around Christmas than any of the other customers we had. Our shop did a lot of quality work for a lot of people . When you make it to Wakarusa, IN you'll have to check on the shop. We did all of Dave's engines accept for the restrictor plate stuff that he got from RCR.

Pretty cool to hear jim Michael's name from performance tech in walkarusa. He one of the local engine shops here in northern Indiana still building engines for racecars.
