    When I was 18 in 1962 i went to hear bernstein conduct this, my favorite symphony (and has been for 50 years). We ended getting drunk together in an irish bar in Sauchiehall street. Glasgow - happy days.

    Una sinfonia meravigliosa con l'adagio espressivo che(dal mio punto di vista) è uno fra i movimenti lenti più belli della storia della musica.

    Second symphony, Robert Schumann. The neglected brightest jewel in symphonic literature between Beethoven and Brahms. Passion, depth, urgency, strenght, delicacies of melting beauty, classical form, a story of illness and healing, it is all there in this singular masterpiece by the epitome of Romanticism.

    Beautiful symphony. Especially the second part. Here again Bernstein interpretes the best version of this symphony. It is simply moving in all ways. Lenny we miss you !!

    This symphony is so above all written in the same period that it is not even in the same world. Mendelssohn`s attempts included. One of the great symphonies by anyone.

    Une sublime symphonie, pleine de fougue et d'énergie dans les deux premiers mouvements. Le troisième mouvement est émouvant et très lyrique, presque céleste. Le Finale est brillant et ... euphorisant.

    This is a great recording. I've always been a fan of Bernstein (Mahler...) and love his passion. I had a recording of the Schumann 3rd which I lost, but enjoyed. However, this recording of the 2nd surpasses it; I love it!

    Mr. Bernstein I don’t know 🤷 whether to thank you for directing to beautiful symphony or Robert Schumann fo Composing. You bought this symphony out for people like me to get up in the morning and finding this marvelous work of Schumann on.my symphony on my stereo tho listen too. I can understand how hard it has been fo you to direct this type of classical music with so many instruments being involved playing together in one ☝️ place playing together. I have not being a fan of Schumann and have not listen to many of his works , but this was very beautiful and made me to go after some more of his works. Thank you Mr. Bernstein for the hard work you did directing this symphony.

    Nothing in my anemic musical education prepared me to put Schumann on the same level as Beethoven and Mahler, but as I have begun, at long last, to form my own judgments, Schumann has begun to seem deeply intelligent, coherent, and absolutely pure. Mahler had his lapses, Beethoven, perhaps, an agenda, but Schumann seems purely and consistently romantic, possessed of an unwavering dedication to both judgment and imagination - nothing to excess, but everything alive with sublime novelty. I feel reinforced by the comments of others here who appreciate Schumann as I now do.

    • @javieralvarez6773

      La musica de Mahler es repetitiva , predecible, grandilocuente y trivial como dijo Toscanini. Ninguna de sus sinfonías le llega a la altura de los tobillos a esta genialidad.

    Schumann was SUCH an enigma. It's so easy to peg a Romantic composer for many reasons, but Schumann seems to escape those attempts with every 3rd or 4th piece he composed.

    Bernstein started to slow down his performances with age. Some other great conductors as Furtwangler, Bruno Walter or Tulio Serafin did the same. This is what I think, when I listened to them from recordings made in their younger years. Other actually accelerated. Toscanini, George Szell, GianAndrea Gavazzeni or Carlo Maria Giulini

      My favourite recording of Schumann's Second Symphony is Harnoncourt/Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Bernstein's live performances with Vienna and Bavarian RSO are splendid, but the slow movement is definitely and exaggeratedly too slow...

    • @Busillis67
      @Busillis67 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tracotel . You should listen to Celi's, now... It's not an official recording, as you may imagine, the sound is poor and the orchestra is not the best, but that interpretation is, in my opinion, simply outstanding.
      I cannot imagine how it would have sounded in a decent recording.

    • @Tracotel
      @Tracotel  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Busillis67 I just listened to the first movement of Schumann's Second Symphony perfomed by Celibidache (1969) . I must confess that I do not share your enthusiasm... The beginning sounds quite heavy to me, especially the second part of the introduction which has to be faster. Then the allegro lacks of articulation, rhythms and life. I always feel something artificial and pedantic with Celibidache, especially when he performed Bruckner. Try Harnoncourt, I think that his interpretation of Schumann is more intense, convincing and flows more naturally.

    Absolutely right, Stephen and others: this is one of the greatest symphonies of the 19th century. And not at all recognized as such. This great performance by Bernstein (such a passionate musician !) might do a lot for those music lovers not yet convinced up till now to admit this fact. Bernstein conducted with all his heart and love for Schumann and who can stay unmoved listening to this performance in this technically superb recording. And: here one can hear how much Brahms owed to his friend Schumann or, to put it otherwise, how much Brahms deep respect for Schumann inspired him in composing his (also) four symphonies. The opening movement of Brahms 'First' has for me always been a salute to Schumann, full of sorrow about his dear friend and mentor's suffering and growing madness. By the way: Bernstein's performance of Schumann's Third (DG:W.Ph.) belongs to the same category as this one. No one else made the Rhine flow so impetuous and glorious as B. did in the 'Rheinische'.

    • @gerardc3821
      @gerardc3821 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree almost fully but simply note that many authorities believe the first movement of Brahms' First to be a "salute" to Beethoven, with the second and third movements traceable to Schumann.

    • @nannojonkers3817
      @nannojonkers3817 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gerard Corsini Yet I should add: Brahms' First, first movement, contains also a passionate remembrance, full of anger, of the illness and end in asylum of his dear friend, discoverer and mentor Robert. It is as if Brahms fights here the demons of Schumann with the means of Beethoven.
      Do we agree ? Pity: we cannot go for his own words, since Brahms always spoke in riddles about his works. Sure, Beethoven looked, as he admitted, over his shoulder, yet Schumann as much, I feel.

    Mendelsshon`s symphonies did not forward the progress of the symphonic form or content as did Schumann`s. They are charming and entertaining. M. himself had doubts about his ventures into the form. The No.5 was not released by the composer in his life time and No.4 was revised many times.

    How to detect the Great Conductors among the manifold. ? What they do might not be authentic, as in case of Bernstein here with too much of Mahler's idiom on his mind (and maybe too much a bit of himself). YET: one listens and senses the conception in case of a great conductor and one feels...within that conception all is done cocksure and for the moment this is the one and only right way to perform this composition. One feels as secure as when driven by an excellent driver, .....no I should put it this way: a Great Driver.

    • @Tracotel
      @Tracotel  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Andrews Perfect and being by far to slow, Bernstein was capable to do so ;-) Schumann's own metronme marking, eight note = 76!!!

    • @themusicalgerbil192
      @themusicalgerbil192 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Schumann's metronome markings often appear far too fast, am I right? Isn't there some speculation, as with Beethoven, that his metronome may have been faulty?

    • @Tracotel
      @Tracotel  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Andrews To whom do Beethoven's or Schumann's metronome markings often appear too fast? Many interpreters have proven today that their metronome indications are correct, natural, musical and obvious. What if I change instrumentation or some chords in a Beethoven or a Schumann symphony? It would be considered as a blasphemy. But to completely ignore the metronome markings of the composers seems to be something very acceptable for many people? Nevertheless it is as important as other elements or parameters of the score left by composers...

    This is a fine performance, better than Szell's (which is the weakest of his otherwise terrific set with Cleveland IMO), but my favorites remain Levine's with Berlin and Dohnanyi's with Cleveland. Celebidachi's recordings towards the end of his life are rather labored, IMO. Barenboim's set of Schumann's symphonies is very good, as is Haitink's with the Concertgebow. Bernstein's Allegros in these symphonies are just a bit to frenetic to me.

      De mon côté, je suis presque gêné des respirations que Bernstein prend dans le scherzo, trop amples, même si bien sûr, l'alternance d'Eusebius et Florestan dans ce morceau est son souffle vital. Quant au tempo, il n'est pas plus précipité que la moyenne et la durée n'est pas plus courte. Avons-nous entendu le même ?
