- The Symphony No. 9 in E minor, "From the New World", Op. 95, B. 178, popularly known as the New World Symphony, was composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It is by far his most popular symphony, and one of the most popular of all symphonies. In older literature and recordings, this symphony was - as for its first publication - numbered as Symphony No. 5. Astronaut Neil Armstrong took a tape recording of the New World Symphony along during the Apollo 11mission, the first Moon landing, in 1969. The symphony was completed in the building that now houses the Bily Clocks Museum.
This symphony is scored for the following orchestra:
2 flutes (one doubling piccolo)
2 oboes (one doubling English horn)
2 clarinets in B flat & A
2 bassoons
4 horns in E, C and F
2 trumpets in E, C and E♭
2 tenor trombones
Bass trombone
Tuba (second movement only)
Timpani
Triangle (third movement only)
Cymbals (fourth movement only)
Strings
The piece has four movements:
I. Adagio - Allegro molto (00:00)
II. Largo (12:07)
III. Scherzo: Molto vivace (25:27)
IV. Allegro con fuoco (33:04)

The cover of this album, although simple, is very significant. It is the picture of a great musician, sure of his talent but without any trace of arrogance or vanity. He is happy with his work and knows how to pass this happiness on to his listeners.

When kids in my class say "Oooh classical music is boring" I always show them the 4th movement of this symphony. Never failed till this day :D On of the most beautiful and powerful symphony of all time. And Abbado doing the conducting, next level.
Even without last movement it's great work but the 4th movement makes it one of the most profound and beautiful art works of human race and Abbado's interpretation is my favorite such an artist Claudio ❤️❤️
35:36 - 36:25 is such a powerful, yet underrated part. So many layers of instruments just piling on top of one another in a chaotic harmony that is just filled with that sense of epicness as if to usher in the dawn of the new world. And yet there is this feeling of longing and unbelonging - longing for ones homeland and knowing that, as great as the new world seems, it is not where one belongs. The same part is repeated in a much slower, lighter fashion from 40:40 - 41:35 and it's where this sense of longing really starts to shine through right before the finale.

this is absolutely awesome. I grew up with Classical music, I am now 55. I listen to System of a Down or Mogwai or Sabaton and Rammstein. But this is one of the best pieces ever written in music history, and a perfect performance, thanks for posting.
This masterpiece with all Dvorak's might that Abaddo conducts and fabulous orchestra play with splendid skill and specutacular technique is beyond description , unfathomable and comfortable to the ear and the mind , and immeasurable admiration and deep emotion

I like Abbado's version over Karajan's because of the use of the trombones in the 4th movement. I like the expressiveness and sheer power that brass instruments bring forth, and these characteristics seem very fitting to displace the sense of immenseness of that part. Karajan is a great conductor as well, but for this one I'll go with Abbado.

i remember when i went sleep in the living room with the tv on and when i woke up they where playing this on tv lol i listened the whole th movement right after walking up
One of the greatest albums of all time (it's 2023 so, 130 years). And that encompasses ANY and ALL genres of music, just my opinion. Start to finish, just..........none of that "filler" material whatsoever, absolutely beautiful, almost no words to describe it. Press play, start listening and lose yourself for 45 minutes 🎻🎺🎻🎺📯📯

Abbado always repeats the exposition in the first movement...as it should be!
Oh you do need those repeats. I'm a firm believer.
To me, the development section is a "surprise". A change of direction. You can't have a surprise without prior repetition. It's like an Englishman, Scotsman, and Irishman joke. You need the denouement on the third, not the second! And then the recapitulation resolves the tension of course.

This is one of the best symphonies ever. In my personal symphonic top10. It's a great performance, though in the scherzo I always feel like the theme's in the french horn, not in the violins. In this rendition it's a bit reversed, violins play over the horn. It's just comes down to what I listened to first, otherwise it's bright and flashy as it should be.
