I've had my African Rangers for a year now, and still don't need a new sole... Concrete floor, motorcycle commuting, every day use.
I use the stock insoles, and after a short break in, they feel great.
They are not waterproof, and don't seem to be wearing out quickly even though we've had a very wet summer.
I do oil them once in a while.

I live in Canada, and I unfortunately can't order anything from the American website. It's surprising since boots are popular up here and Jim Greens have the big advantage of being the best value. As far as I know I can't get the AR8s on Amazon. I will check again once the new options get released. Also, this probably isn't Jim Green's fault but the Canadian website has both the AR at a significantly higher price (~$40cdn) than the American site after conversion (the Razorbacks also have this issue but ~$30). That might have to do with import fees.
In the short-term, I'm going to buy a pair of ARs to substitute my Altra Lone Peaks for every time I don't require maximal traction, buying new shoes multiple times a year is against my ideals and the Altras simply wear too fast (I'm looking at about 1500km worth of life per pair). The ARs, the Lone Peaks, my sandals and my running shoes will cover most of my needs, except in the winter, which is why I'm hoping the AR8s as they would likely be more relevant than the Razorbacks.
Question: When I replace the soles of the AR8s, could I get good results if I use a different sole instead provided I find a good shoemaker to install it? (I would like to get a sole designed for ice and snow)

Just got my pair of AR8s in that I custom ordered. Ordered as: Same leather as the Boabab (Houston Brown) as well as the same sole. I can't wait to put these into use, as pest control is my job. I can run into everything from concrete, hardwood, and linoleum floors, climb ladders, walk in mud, water, wet grass, gravel, and walk on attic joists all in one shift.

Great to see more wedge sole boots. I love how comfortable they are. You guys should make a 6inch version in black leather and a black wedge sole. Even an 8 inch with a black wedge sole would be great too. Lots of uniform requirements don't allow for the gray colored wedge that you currently have. I'd be first in line to wear a pair of them on duty if they came in all black 🙏👍

Cannabis Farmer/Mycologist here in the mountains of Northern California, USA. My rangers are the most comfortable boot I have ever worn. Whether I am on my feet crouched taking care of plants in the garden bed, or going through rough mountainous terrain, these boots always make sure my feet are comfortable. I can heel toe and have total pedal feel. As well as walk around the property and forage for plants and mushrooms. Cant wait to pickup a pair of these AR8s. Much love from 🇺🇸

Best boot I’ve ever had. Wish I’d had these when I was in the military. I bought a second pair to rotate. They will seem freakishly wide in the heel when you get them, but the leather will fold around your ankle and lock your heel in after breaking them in. The toe box is also wide, but does not feel unnatural at all even when new. I use the factory insoles. They’re not squishy, but they have a great leather top that prevents blisters.

Are the two new color options offered only with the wedge outsoles? I've planned to buy one of these and going to wear them for hiking and I prefer plain old rugged outsoles for that purpose. I'm living South Korea and the wedge soles are unsuitable, it's quite slippery and wet here. It would be fantastic if JG sole to be available in matched tanned color sometime in the future.

Great video as always, the new crazy horse AR8s look beautiful, however I'd suggest emphasizing the difference between the JG and STC last a bit more on your site, my size 11.5 vellies felt pretty huge at first so I put in a thick insole and they fit perfect, so I then decided to get the AR8s in 11 and they came out Noticeably too short. sadly it took me a couple weeks of wearing them in to realise they were too short for me, and not just tough to break in. I've sent them to a local cobbler to stretch them out a little which I'm hoping will alleviate it, but half a size between a pair that was too big and a pair that's too small I think is indicative of the JG last being even snugger than advertised. At least I know now and will be getting a pair of razorbacks in 12 soon.

I couldn't be more happy with my experience as a customer (had to submit an exchange and it was the fastest turnaround I've ever seen!), and a new boot owner.
I didn't expect to love my Rangers enough to wear them daily but they have taken over my Vellies because I find them so slick and versatile.
I'm excited about the concept of an "inbetween" boot! I love the look of this AR8, but I don't need 8 inch boots in my environment! My suggestion would be to maintain the look of the boot but attempt to lower it's profile, perhaps even coming with the Ranger sole by default. Maybe a rough-out version of this "inbetween" boot? Or a rough-out toe cap and heel for a varied look to the new addition to the growing line-up!
Currently own: AR Crazy Horse, AR Buffalo, Vellie Tan (flesh out, not rough)
For any ordering and curious, I ordered a half size down from my Brannock! I was able to fit my orthopedics (FP insoles, Gamechangers, 4-5mm?) still, but I wear thin socks, not work socks.
If you're wearing thick socks year round AND have large insoles, go for true Brannock. I had no issues exchanging my size! Just be sure to not condition your leather, let it be natural until you're sure of sizing.

Looks awesome. How resistant are they to water? More specifically - in northern Europe we have salty, sandy snow mush a few months every year - easily 10cm and more - which just destroys leather (I think it's the salt... the government trucks put it on roads at 4:00 am to melt ice). Applying tons of creams and waxes is basically mandatory in my opinion. I'm sure this is also true in Canada, northern US etc...

thanks for this information everybody needs one of each they both have valuable individual properties. you mention offering a suggestion. mine would be🦬 a spiked logging boot.🦬 putting a knife pocket option on tall boots would be helpful. i wonder if your water buffalo leather would be thick enough for the waterproof logger. you guys are very creative. here in the US golf is coming back and you have uppers ready to go. bedroom shoes that can be worn to the mailbox, just plain leather and stockmen elastic maybe similar shape to the stockmen. having a bedroom shoe that covers the ankles is more comfortable and warmer than a shoe like slipper, some may like just a slide in slipper. glad you are there and doing so much good. one more idea fighter pilot boot. thank you

Well if you do read these comments then here’s a unique from someone who works in a muddy environment and needs metatarsal guards. Preferably internal met guards but externals will work too. So here’s the requirement ASTM certified steel or composite toe with internal or external metatarsal in the razorback or AR8 style. Need a sole that is heat resistant and puncture resistant ( I work in a copper mill doing heavy industrial work) along with a sole that can naturally clear the mud from its own lugs. As I work security black would robe preferred but it’s not a specific requirement for that color. Just a steel toe met guard boot with a heat resistant and puncture resistant sole would work ( the wedge is good if you could make it tougher to resist punctures by metal chunks or thicker )

Waiting and hoping for a zero drop boot that has a sole that is still worth a damn in the traction and durability department.
I'm not super keen on absolute minimalism and ground feel. If you want that just go barefoot. I like having a sole to protect my feet from rocks that isn't useless on loose dirt and an upper that isn't made of the cheapest thing possible. I just hate excessive heel/toe drop and tight toe boxes.

I got a pair and was very confused by the fit, same size in the normal AR fits perfectly, but the AR8 was so tight i couldnt even get the insole in easily. I still want a pair just not that fit

you are making perfect shoes at a good price point, please do not start introducing synthetic materials to reduce cost. many companies start doing that and it destroys them.

Yo, when are you going to make a double lasted African Ranger? Would love to get the increased water resistance. Also, glad to see you making the Ranger in the Huston Brown. Might have to pick a pair up.

Is there a back hook option for no heel slip and do you offer a soft mid sole with the more durable sole ?

The wedge sole, does it offer the same or similar levels of penetration to the AR8?
I am asking as I would use these for a pair of boots to wear to site inspections and riding on my bike.

Please please stock the AR8’s in rough out. I’ve been looking for a good rough out bush boot. They look great!

The formal boabs would be great. Would love to see a 6 inch AR8 on a wedge sole?

Would it be possible to replace the fiberboard midsole with a leather one? Wouldn't that increase longevity and comfort at a very low cost?

Gareth how about a fudge brown in a 6” height with JG lug sole but with a little wedge sole sandwiched in between. It would also be nice to see something like that with a toe cap like the original african ranger boot.

Any plans to make this in steel toe? Many companies in America require steel toe. I like these boots though.

I would be interested in a "barefoot" AR8 version with a flat sole and a super wide toe box that allow the toes to spread naturally.

I have been looking for really durable boots for a long time as I do a lot of Forrest work that evolves running and get lots of wear and Tear

Great job on the 2000 pairs you donated 👍🏻 Love my AR8s, they fit just like my Razorbacks - i.e. great 😌

Would absolutely love an AR8 wedge sole in black. I don't do any wilderness trudging, more concrete trudging and love the look of the black AR8 as a replacement for my doc martens. Just a bit intimidated to wear around the hard sole AR8 in the city all day.

i think a 6 inch version would also be handy because for me the 8 inch is to much and the normal AR is to short

I have a pair of razorbacks for awhile now. With an orthotic in them (I am an old man) they are terribly comfortable. I am glad you put in an insole by default, because it makes it easy replace it with an orthotic/arch support without having the boot feel cramped or less roomy inside afterwards. Thank you for that. All the same, I prefer a taller shaft to boots, and the news of a razorback with an 8in shaft is welcome. I think I shall need a second pair, now!
