Very good explanation and well shot ! One thing to watch out for if you buy used, is that these are often upgraded to taper bearings ( although standard are fine) and require just finger tight torque !
Very useful video. Thanks bro
It's not easy to video while doing mechanical work, but nice job. Thanks for the link to the steering nut socket. Yet another tool I need to have, don't think I'll video the task, since you already did it so well. Your FJR looks awesome BTW.
Thanks! I love my FJR, and I know Audrey couldn't be happier with her FJ09. They are both great machines. Once we start having kids it will be hard to afford to have a pair of late-model bikes sitting in the garage, so we're enjoying being married with no kids while we can. The plan is to do an AK trip in summer is '18.

I just did this on my fj-09 and it was quicker and easier that I thought. I bought the same tool you have from ebay. Looks like yet another great quality tool I won't use often, but good tools are worth it to me.
Yup, its pretty straight forward and easy to do if you're not filming the whole thing.
My father's tool box (which I guess is mine now since he recently passed and left all his tools to me) has a Snap-On sticker on it that says "I invest in precious metals, please don't ask to borrow." A good tool is always worth the money over a piece of junk.
What if my bottom nut is twisting the entire tube that it sits on?
Thanks for the video, just a question, the socket in the link its listed as "Yamaha FJR 1300 Steering Stem Nut Socket" is that the right one?
Yes, they're the same

This guy makes them in San Diego. Met him in person. Great guy!
@@Skyerzen ty. Im gonna try it out. No issues for you using the eBay one you showed?
@@mattm1987 the one from the guy in san diego worked flawlessly
Hello!
I just did this without issues. Thank you for the video. I got a xsr900. Felt good right away but after a longer ride it felt bad again. I feel and hear little clicks when going over small bumps.
What should i do? Torque it harder?
I hear that clicks too on '17 tracer. Did you do something about that?
@@rok156 not yet. I'm planning on making the workshop look at it on the next service. Maybe it is a bad bearing.
@@cfvgd This week I changed steering steam bearings. I mounted All balls roller bearings instead of oem ball bearings. Man what a difference. Bike is more stable in the corners, and there's no clicking at all. I really recommend roller bearings.
@@rok156 Really? Nice man! so good to hear. Im thinking of doing this myself since i will not reach 30000km this year. i will do the regular year-service myself anyway.
Thank you so much for the info. Much appreciated!
@@rok156 Clicks are normally a damaged race. Replace.
While you were there... How hard would it be if you greased the steering head bearings?
I wondered the same thing.
Very nice video and job too!!!is this solution for wobbling problem;;;
This particular bike never had a wobble problem. If you did have a wobble problem, this along with making sure your tires are properly inflated would be the first thing I would do.
Ok man thanks!!🙂
sorry for me coment in spanish, thanks
nope it’s a trick we get that 70’s day in WI every year!!!!
Life and death eh? lol I just rode all day doing wheelies without a nut on that steering stem... Noticed when I got home that it's missing.
Guaranteed your steering head bearings are trashed if you were riding wheelies with no steering stem nut. You got lucky you noticed it before it was too late.
@@mastanate01 What happens if you ride without stem nut? I assume something falls apart?
@@bobfrankfurt9449 If your stem nut is missing then the only thing holding your steering in place (all the bearings etc) is 15 lb ft of torque. So a few bumps/vibrations down the road when that 15 lb ft comes loose your steering suddenly let's loose.
@@mastanate01 Oh good to know.. Dealer said do NOT ride, they may have to send a truck to pick up the bike... Wtf I just did a $260 50 point inspection like 2700 kms ago... Bike is brand new. They better fucking pay for all of this or I'm gonna lose my shit.
@@mastanate01 Dealer said most likely the bearings are fine because it's a brand new bike and are pretty tough.. 2019 MT-09 with 3800 kms... Only rode maybe 2 hours without the stem nut on.. I'm waiting for the dealer to receive the new washer and nut..
