I wonder if ancient people were just seeing goats or other horned creatures that simply had a genetic abnormality, and that these single horned animals were so rare they were seen as holy or magical?

According to the 1828 Noah Webster Dictionary and the 2003 book by Eric Dinerstein - the Unicorn is the One Horned Rhinoceros.

Dear Mythos the Historian, I thoroughly enjoyed it ❤ I believe that these Creatures still exist in the souls of humans ❤ they're a life force of ancient spirit and wisdom, the horn is recessive in humans ~ it's the Third Eye ❤ if more humans were in touch with the Unicorn energy in their Souls, there wouldn't be war or famine or any other destructive actions...but humans are (currently) too preoccupied with "hard" work, maintaining their boxed up lives ❤ hug your inner Unicorn today ❤ and look after the forest next door, or plant a tree or three ❤

It's an ungulate with a single horn. I don't see why people think that's impossible. There are at least 3 at Candy Mountain and are said to sleep in a cave at its base.
