@@joserijalkasyasyaf9723 I hard disagree, personally. Drums are what does it for me. If the percussion isn't carrying the energy, I can't feel it. I can't do the original version of this song. It's not enough energy. Shouting isn't energy.

I always saw him as the guy who looks like Will Farrell and drums for a great band. I had ZERO clue just how phenomenal he is at his craft. He is, BY FAR, the most underrated drummer of this generation.
Chad Smith, I literally listen to the beginning, and I just watch you, you are a fucking surgeon, brother. Incredible, beautiful skills, beyond talent. Calling you an artist is an understatement. May you reap your rewards for your efforts and talents.
It's not a hard song to figure where it's going, but to just jump on the treadmill at 30mph first listen to shows why he's been so successful as a drummer. Master of his craft
Chad Smith might be the best for this series. BMTH is one of my favorite bands and Chad's first try almost made me forget what the original version sounded like.
Same. I know the song (not a super fan or anything) but the way he played it made it feel like it was perfect for the song. (Sure, some things would change ofc seeing that he didn't know when certain changes happened and stuff). He definitely played that well!
@@ShayneMacGregor that also has to do with the way it's mixed for TH-cam. Obviously they're bringing the drums to the very front since that's the whole focus of the show. If you imagine this same drum track as a mid-back mix, it makes perfect sense for the song. A lot of OG drummers make good money with newer bands doing exactly this. Consulting and coming up with creative drum licks that goes along with decades of experience
They need to release a Drumeo album of the tracks these guest drummers be playing because that was so freaking dope! That's the version of this song that I want!
a lot of drummers are gifted like this. did you ever go to a football game in high school and hear your school playing the other schools song right then and there and/or vice versa? drummers certainly work hard, but a lot of them are gifted like this.... not saying they don't work hard, but it's not super uncommon bc drummers are just a different breed. it's pretty amazing to be a part of a drumline or band and witness it.
@@TheAluvisify naw it's just an exploitable beat when it doesn't have lots of stuff there's tons of room to improvise, he said he liked the original drum parts and called it good composition.
@@TheAluvisifyI don't think so; Chad himself is a master of "less is more". He often talks about how simple the drums are for the Chili Peppers, even tho he's a goddamn nice drummer, he doesn't need showing off, he plays what the band needs... So I think it would take more to "unimpress" him than simplicity.
@@timothyoreilly6571 I mean that's basically what I was saying. When I say that he's "umimpressed", I don't mean that he dislikes the composition. He probably understands that the drums are simpler because the song is more on the pop side. But the fact that he follows along with the original but then goes off on his own kind of shows that he felt like the drums could've been a little more impactful at that section.
I saw the first part of this video on tiktok and immediately ran to TH-cam to see the full version! Absolutely one of my favorite musicians right here!!!!
I love how at 4:00, Chad's face said he knew that something was meant to be there cause of the timing/sound changing. But he was so chill about that, and delayed a drop on que. Amazing and fun video, and his take on BMTH was very colourful!
He was right, the tribal vibe he played goes insanely well with this song. Chad is just unreal when it comes to "feeling" a song and nailing a drum section
I don't know anything about drums, but as a complete amateur I just find impressive how he can simply listen to a song for 30 secs and start jamming to it. I checked some other videos on this channel and other drummers tend to analyze/break down the song and make notes, take multiple takes, and Chad here just starts spitting fire after 15s. I just love how he feels the music and how spontaneous he is when creating new beats. Impressive
Pretty standard mic set from what I see, 57 on snare, 451 on hat, U87 outside the kick. The Earthworks DM20s on the toms were pretty cool. Also like the 414 placed next to the shell of the snare, don't recall seeing that before. That said, it's not really the mics. What you're primarily hearing is a good kit, tuned properly, in a great sounding room, mixed well, and played by a pro. All other things being equal, you could probably get just as good of a sound with 2 overheads, a kick and a snare top mic.
I'd imagine since the drums are what we are here to see they probably just made the drums more prominent in the mix. Whereas if this was redone to make it an actual song they'd probably adjust the mix and pull the drums back.
@@Jmack7861 don't be a pedantic asshole. The songs he's been doing are incredibly prevalent in the emo subculture, nobody gives a shit about the "dc emotional hardcore scene" anymore, the word emo does not mean the same thing that it did 30 years ago

It was pretty amazing to watch....he'd do a big drum fill anticipating the song to change sections, and if he was wrong he adjusted in the blink of an eye like as if he meant for it to happen.

No wasted seconds, be fearless, love the process, adjust fast or ya ain’t gonna called back to play around with your friends & oh yeah guest drum on some awesome #1 hits. Really would love to see how much funk he’d put into this one after a few more takes.
@keepitsecret-dl1pr be real. This song is incredibly boring from the perspective of any of the instruments. Chad keeps anticipating that they'll do something different and the song NEVER progresses. His take was considerably better than the original because at least it introduced an interesting dynamic.
@smashin222 Most of the BMTH songs I've heard are driven by the vocals more than anything. The drums support the vocals, guitar fills the holes, everything else brings it home. Repetitive drumming isn't great, but better than busy drumming getting in the way
Hi Brandon, can you make Chad play RHCP's Let's Make Evil one time, I think that song features some of his best and most complex drumming he's ever done -- let's see if he remembers this One Hot Minute B-Side haha
Hope you can get Mat Nicholls in sometime! Would love to hear him go over some of the BMTH catalogue! P.S. you could do a whole album of Chad Smith covers haha
Man, at 3:19, that was just pure amazing talent. It sounded so damn good that I will try to play that riff when I’m playing the song on my drums. Just blew me away.
I know with practice this is possible to be this musical and fluid on a first listen but Smith’s drumming here makes me feel like some people are BORN with a musical spirit.
I know we admire the Portnoys, the Manginis and power drummers of the world, but this guy is a different kind of genius. I have always loved his drumming.
Ehhh, what they asked Portnoy to do was insane. Significantly harder than this song by a factor of multiples, and they asked Portnoy to learn the original part, not make his own, which is way harder in the case of a song like Pneuma imo because now accuracy is a goal, not just playing something functional.
...and who in here is claiming that what Portnoy did was not harder or more complicated? I even said "we" (which includes myself) admire him and monster drummers like him. Is that not giving them proper respect? Saying Chad is a different kind of genius is accurate, his feels and groove cannot be denied and neither his musical understanding. I never said, and never will say, that X drummer is better than Y. I respect them all for what they do.
@WeMissDimebag it's a contrast in approaches and learning styles. One very cerebral and chatty (mostly about how hard it is, which pedagogically speaking only hinders progress -- even when it is really fucking hard! 🤣), the other kinesthetic. I could NOT play TOOL, but I can say with certainty these two drummers could learn a lot from each other. Ooo what if they merged into a single superdrummer?! 🤯
I’m in awe or watching him just go for it. Not trying to emulate the original, just playing what feels right without a second thought. What a talented individual.
He’s never heard it before, neither had I. He can’t emulate it he can just play something. I was really disappointed to hear the actual song after hearing his drumming.
I would absolutely love to have Chad be a re-occurring guest on this. Between his talent, natural comedic impulses, and overall desire to play on the fly makes these episodes some of the most entertaining content. Much love to you all.
Best drummer hands down, not because of how complicated his drumming is, but more so because he drums exactly what’s needed for the music he hears, and the result seems to always be better than the original and more fitting
I would pay good money to watch a whole series that's just Chad absolutely going to town on songs he's never heard with no prior listen-through. you can tell he's having so much fun with it and it's such an infectious watch and listen

I think this is the whole point of it all. Hats off to whoever from Drumeo shouted the idea for the double Chad.
😂
what i find amazing is he is constructing on top of what he had done the previous secion, so its not only improvising, he keeps the idea flowing
also, 3:08 is insane how he comes back perfectly.
I want an hour long video of Chad just jamming to different genres or something. He’s so fun to watch and listen to.

YES YES YES!!!!! A THOUSAND TIMES YES!!

God. His understanding of the music is so insane, he nails the transitions so effortlessly!
I mean you can hear them about to happen if you're listening to be fair but yea the ability of drummers to get them on the exact count is awesome
Year I don't think this song has. very difficult structure but he's amazing. Tribal version ftw
admittedly the song is entirely in 4/4 with a pretty basic composition of four bars leading to the next phrase. it's not really that crazy if you've been doing music related shit for a little
It's quite easy to guess when verses will transition into a chorus. It's just a simple song in 4/4 with a predictable structure.
crazy to think hes now 62 and play with soo much energy
He must be super in shape / good diet and all that. He has the energy of someone my age and I have the energy of someone his age..
@@steinblitz1506 I'm a couple of months away from reaching 50 and bought my first drum-kit. I always have to laugh when I hear younger people speak about age. My mother of 74 drives every week to the other side of our island just to have coffee, buy groceries and even lifts big coolers by herself. Don't focus on the numbers, just stay active and you'll be able to run along just fine :)
My god, I didn't even realize how old I was until you just freakin wrote that! Damn! How time passes so fast. He is incredible at this age. Hell my parents are that age and they just sit around and watch TV. Damn, I think he is beyond the range of the Chilli peppers.
that’s passion for ya

He is a legend!!! His version just added a thousand layers to the song. Wow.
Please bring him back!
Chad Smith listening to the original like "ok but mine was WAY more fun"
Yea and like "what he's doing is cool, but he should do:" *proceeds to make the metal song more heavy than the original
And he DID.
I dont think he had any respect for the original drum track
@Globalizmas-Keiksmazodis That's BS. If he didn't like it, he wouldn't have had so much fun playing it, and he totally kept the spirit of the song. You're trippin.

This.
Agreed
a human metronome and a human drum machine? So in other words a drummer?
@@chrisharris1522 yup
I like Chad's version more, more engaged. It gives the song a more energetic feel.
And on that bridge man, he killed it there. Had never heard the song, got into it fast, it fit great, timed it well with the song coming back in, while he couldn't be totally sure that's the way it was going.
Hmm, i think the point of simpler drums is that so the drum didnt dominate the feeling of the song. While its fun its not right for my ears😅
@@joserijalkasyasyaf9723 I hard disagree, personally. Drums are what does it for me. If the percussion isn't carrying the energy, I can't feel it. I can't do the original version of this song. It's not enough energy. Shouting isn't energy.
@@joserijalkasyasyaf9723 For me personally, Chad's version was better. And that's just the one take version. Imagine if that was fine-tuned with a few more run throughs. But then again, we all have our own preferences.

A bunch of my old friends used to think that Chad was just another drummer, I tried to tell them for the longest time that he's a beast! This just seals the deal on that!

I loaded up TH-cam to watch something else and was immediately abducted by this brilliance
Holy guacamole, it’s like he just stepped in and grabbed the song by its neck. Chad, never grow old.

Doesn’t sound like this. That’s for sure.
Same. I know the song (not a super fan or anything) but the way he played it made it feel like it was perfect for the song. (Sure, some things would change ofc seeing that he didn't know when certain changes happened and stuff). He definitely played that well!
Never heard the original but he killed it
Meh, it was a bit too busy for me. Need to let the song breathe a bit.
Me too!!!
Muscle memory is crazy. Chad is built to feel it and respond. You can see the music working in his head.
a lot of drummers are gifted like this. did you ever go to a football game in high school and hear your school playing the other schools song right then and there and/or vice versa? drummers certainly work hard, but a lot of them are gifted like this.... not saying they don't work hard, but it's not super uncommon bc drummers are just a different breed. it's pretty amazing to be a part of a drumline or band and witness it.
❤❤❤ I fully back this statement up FACTS
The engeneer deserves an award. The drumms sound is getting better and better
I love that "listening to the original " essentially means "playing a solo" for Chad
I think he was just unimpressed with how barebones the texture was in places where it could've been busier.
I was surprised how good he was in this video considering his drumming in the chili peppers is meh to me

Impressive

the mics they used for this video are insane? best sounding drums ive ever heard
It is "drumeo"
With him everything seem's easy, the way is moving the way the sound came smoothly just amazing !!!

insane.
It was pretty amazing to watch....he'd do a big drum fill anticipating the song to change sections, and if he was wrong he adjusted in the blink of an eye like as if he meant for it to happen.
tbf its all one tempo in 4/4.
Perfect example of how this music nerd of a magaband from the 90s become a studio drummer is his off hours.
Repetitive drumming isn't great, but better than busy drumming getting in the way
DRUMEO!!! PLEASE MAKE A SPOTIFY LIST FOR EVERYSONG IN THE "FIRST TAKE" of CHAD SMITH!

Love how this dude just feels for it and plays exactly what comes from his soul. One of the coolest drummers to ever take the seat
Man, at 3:19, that was just pure amazing talent. It sounded so damn good that I will try to play that riff when I’m playing the song on my drums. Just blew me away.
That part was definitely better than the original
I liked it a lot too sounded tribal almost
How did he even anticipate the vocals coming into this part at 3:09 so perfectly too? Guy is just a monster
At 3:40 he expects the breakdown I think but the build keeps going :D Which means he need to keep increasing his intensity for another few bars!
I know with practice this is possible to be this musical and fluid on a first listen but Smith’s drumming here makes me feel like some people are BORN with a musical spirit.
drummers are so cool, they have like a connection with the drum and they do their thing so flawlessly
I know we admire the Portnoys, the Manginis and power drummers of the world, but this guy is a different kind of genius. I have always loved his drumming.
Comparing this to Portnoy's TOOL session is a masterclass
I thought his piece was awesome. I just really have a hard time believing this is rolling off one drum-less take. His timing on changes is too good.
Considering he had never heard the song before, it would be impossible for him to emulate the original percussion
I would absolutely love to have Chad be a re-occurring guest on this. Between his talent, natural comedic impulses, and overall desire to play on the fly makes these episodes some of the most entertaining content. Much love to you all.
every time i see him on the drums i feel like my brain gets rewired .....like wow .....
6:16 and following Chad's freestyle is insane, a great demonstration of how technically fantastic he is as a drummer.
Faxx u can tell he just whipped it out heavy cuz the music felt good
I like that they got someone named Chad to play the Gigachad song

Best drummer hands down, not because of how complicated his drumming is, but more so because he drums exactly what’s needed for the music he hears, and the result seems to always be better than the original and more fitting
I would pay good money to watch a whole series that's just Chad absolutely going to town on songs he's never heard with no prior listen-through. you can tell he's having so much fun with it and it's such an infectious watch and listen
I love watching Chad in this format. He just jumps straight in. It's like he listens with his sticks.
I’m not gonna lie out of all the drummers on this channel so far that I’ve seen and I’ve seen over maybe 30 videos Chad Smith is by far the best and most entertaining to watch
picks up the groove in a matter of seconds, what a legend
Yeah this is someone who has clocked drums
bro eats drum for breakfast, that's why
Can tell he's done a lot of session drumming. What an absolute Gigachad.
The song starts with the synth chopped into 1/4 notes with choppy releases so it essentially provides an instant metronome and there’s only so many grooves that sound good to us to choose from while maintaining that quarter note structure.
Bro if you play drums since a decent amount of time it’s pretty easy to pick up
