I'm so glad I found this. I just bought a 2016 T250 Dual Sport with 750 miles and extra set of tires for $1100. One owner! But I can only touch the balls of my feet both at the same time. I was hoping they had a lowering kit, but I don't find any such thing. This might help me just as much. Happy to find someone has done this.
Great video. I added a nicer rear suspension to my crf300l and it has raised the seat height to just sightly out of my comfort zone. I'll be doing this instead of getting the lowering link for the reasons you mentioned. Super informative video. Thank you!
Nice video. Yeah I noticed when I did it, that it’s not going to mold perfectly at the top bend towards the horizontal because so much was cut out. However another poster pointed out heating it up presumably with a heat gun might help stretching so you can better staple that bend area better. Honestly I’ll probably just leave it as you stated I’m not going to be sitting on that bend. I did this on my Yamaha 2001 250 seat.
Nice job mate, I've been thinking of doing this to my bike. I don't really struggle with the height generally but an extra 20mm or so might help in the real rough stuff if I get stuck.
I'm about to do this to a 150 cc scooter seat. I need the ability to gain height but i don't want to re-do the shape of the seat cover cus thats a pain and I don't want to have to sew it. My plan is to remove the amount of foam I need and to replace it with some really soft foam that will easily deform when I sit on the seat but spring back up to keep the contour of the upholstery. :-) ( wish me Luck! LOL)
@@BrokenSprocket Thanks. It was a roaring success once I figured out the best way to get the staples out. Hard to get a screwdriver under them and a staple puller didn't work because many staples were near a curve. Fastest way was using a small pen knife to get under them and pry up. This released one side and the rest of the staple was easily pulled out with pliers.
@@michelleseguin3863 Chances are your seat will be a little different than mine. I used some foam made to be used in chairs or other upholstery bought from Walmart, because I had it lying around. I'm 5'3 with a 27 inch inseam. The stock seat height was 28 inches. My foam was circular, about an inch thick and about a foot and a half in diameter. I had to remove the seat from the bike completely. My seat is big enough for two people, the driver and a rider. After taking out some staples, I simply pulled up the seat cover half way to expose where I sat in front and used a knife to cut that section of foam away, leaving the passenger seat area in the back. I just made one cut to remove this piece as to not tear it up in case I had to reuse it. I had to cut the new softer foam to make it fit. To connect it, I just duct taped it to the stiffer back passenger foam I had left on the bike. This held it in place while I then duct tapped all the foam to the plastic seat frame the foam sat on top of. I suppose you could glue it instead but I opted not to in case I made a mistake or would need to re-do it in the future. Last I replaced the cover and duck tapped it down because I could not put staples back in it, as the plastic seat frame was too thick. This got me about a good inch lower than the stock foam they used which would not compress. I'll try to make a video later tonight if I'm able to. If I do, I'll reply back letting you know. - another thing that helped me.. buy shoes with tall souls and to get even more height out of the shoes use thick as you can stand inserts. I could not afford expensive motorcycle shoes with ankle protectors added, heck I couldn't even find them in my size. (small foot) I bought Brahma brand steel toe work boots that are made of leather and have a good amount of leather in the ankle area. These have a good inch tall souls. I then used gel inserts to get a little more height. Between the seat modification and the shoes, I can easily reach the ground but cannot flat foot both feet. I get about half my feet down mostly on the balls of my feet but thats better than tip-toe. If I had modified the plastic seat frame itself I could have gotten more space but I didn't want to take the chance on destroying the frame. My scooter came from China and I'd have a lot of trouble getting a replacement frame. Keep in mind, your seat may be made totally different then mine. I hope this helps and if I get to make the video, I'll let you know.
I'm about 5'9 and a half. I have a YZ 125 and it's quite tall for me, but I managed to use it as time goes by. I have 1 foot flat on one side and 1/2 of both of my feet when I try to stand on both of my legs. Yz 125 is a quite tall bike but i haven't tried trimming the seat yet. I know there's a lot of riders who are shorter than me like 5'5" - 5'7" but they can handle a 36-38 inches seat height dirt bike.
yeah and the frame rails or seat pan edges are painful if you tend to sit down alot of time when riding you'll have to stand up and try not to use the seat
I suppose that would depend on type of foam and weight of rider. I suggest cut off Half the amount you Think you need then test it. I'm replacing my cut off foam with really soft foam that will compress but allow me to keep the shape of the seat cover without sewing.
If you're located in San Diego, would you be willing to do my seat?? I don't own those tools you used - or do you have a recommendation of where I could get this done?
How much lower dose this get you i want to get a wr450 as my daily ride but i have really short legs and if i remember the last time i was on a wr250 i could only just get one foot on the ground no where near flat and was hanging off the bike alot iam guessing even a couple of inches would help alot
How many inches will that give? I'm planning to purchase a 2006 vstrom 1000dl but I have an I seam of 30 inches and half my butt its sticking out to touch with one foot. Do you think that will cause any handling issues?
Well explained video, just a note if you cut to much down due to the width of the plastic base, you’re legs might start splaying out, so I would advise cutting bit by bit and try on bike before cutting to much
Nice, like the use of the nice, seen a couple different ways to make that cut🪓⛏🔥. What bike was this seat off ? year ? 🧐That was some tightly packed closed cell foam there. must have been hard to even sit on for long with not give. I ask, cause different manufacture use different stuff and depths so didnt know if this was a KTM or Yamaha seat or other. IF you can remember that is.🙄 Nice break down and appreciate you addressing the other options. 🤑 TX4V

I reshaped all the seats on my street bike and remember the mess sanding down the foam makes. It would static cling to everything!
Yep gets all over you 😟
What did you use to sand?
Disk sander
Nice job measuring and drawing out your plan first. There are definitely trade offs from reshaping the seat but like you said... IT'S FREE!
Yeah there is not to many options when your short but my friend is happy with the end result thanks for watching.
Yeah good vid, I really gotta do that to the WR as I’m 5ft nothing and on tippy toes so will make a big difference for me
Yep will help you out heaps 👍
Good result mate did well. Significant difference there hopefully it makes a big improvement for the rider 🤙
Thanks mate yeah this should make it more comfortable and improve safety for him 😁👍
Just bought a 2024 kx250 I’m definitely going to be doing this. Great video 👍
If you heat up the seat cover a little bit when you are reinstalling it will stretch easier and you will be able to get it tighter
Thanks. Like you said: "for free!"
I'm going to do this with my DRZ400E, so I don't have to feel like a ballet dancer!

Great video!! Have you guys ever considered placing a thin layer of gel sheets underneath the cover?
What do you mean by gel sheets?
Sunny Vaz gel padding I guess, it’s all over ebay and amazon. It’s a layer of gel for seats.
Great video man. I would have never though of sanding the foam. Do you know what sand paper grit you used ?

Great video, mate. Thanks. Is it safe to say that a seat on a scooter like the Suzuki Bergman 650 can probably be lowered by 5 inches or more ?
Thanks mate appreciate the feedback. I'm unfamiliar with that bike so not sure about 5 inches.
With less foam, wouldn’t that make the sea even more comfortable?
It makes it wider so more area to sit.
Brilliant video 👍
