the COOLEST thing about vocals is literally everyone sounds different. that's your biggest bet for finding that uniqueness your music may need. I don't like listening to my voice myself but I know other people might enjoy it. now I just need to learn how to get my voice out. thank you!

I’ve been teaching for a long time. I so dig your teaching style. When I’m a student, I know when I’m really paying attention to a teacher that there’s probably something I can take from that teacher’s work and incorporate into my own teaching. Liepe, you’re laid back, knowledgeable and (very important) really good at what you’re teaching. You’re even slowly teaching a DRUMMER to sing!

This is absolutely genius! One of my BIGGEST enemies with singing is always comparing myself to who I want to sound like but taking the emotional attachment out of the equation this way is mindblowingly original! So glad I found your videos! Now I just have to stop comparing myself 😆

  • @David-uh3wg

I just found your channel, and this is the first video I've watched (I'm sure there will be many others), and I just wanted to let you know how blown away I am. When learning things on my own, or even from a professional teacher/instructor/coach...I always feel held back. I stumble into my breakthroughs, because people rarely teach in a way that really resonates with me. Things don't click as easily as they should, or seem to be in the wrong order. Like, 'wow, if you had given me this tidbit of advice ten lessons ago, it would have helped A LOT.' I've often thought 'man, if future me could just come back and teach current me, I could learn SO FAST.'
...you give me that vibe, man. Except you seem really nice, whereas I assume future me would still be kind of a dick.
It only took five minutes of your video for me to just kinda sit here, speechless, and realize 'holy shit there is nothing holding me back from writing music right now. I didn't know I already had the tools...'
Anyway, don't know if you read all your comments, but here's to hoping you see this. People deserve to know when someone is offering them the highest praise...hell, I know hearing such things would brighten my day up a bit! If you keep teaching, I'll keep watching.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

For me as a foreigner singing in English it’s hard to find a natural singing voice when having to constantly worry about how to pronounce certain syllable combinations and diphthongs, taking into consideration that different singers grew up in different regions and are having their own ways on how to pronounce those things.
So all I can do is to double my awareness when listening on how my favorite singers solve those tasks, compare their solutions and decide for myself what I want to sound like.
It kind of feels like being in a dark room catching fireflies until you get enough to start seeing a path, still not knowing if you are walking in the right direction.
But as soon as you start making conscious decisions on how to handle certain situations when singing (e.g. what kind of vowel sound to accentuate for certain words where there are multiple ones to choose from, e.g. „run“) you get more confident, and that confidence is what makes you more relaxed so you can focus on emotional delivery, adding effects and so on.
When talking about vowels, I mean the ones we actually hear, not read. Check IPA vowel chart for a start, then look on the international way of spelling words.
Anyway, thanks for your fresh approach to singing, more like it is supposed to be when you are a little, child and just goofing around with what you have and who you are. No intent, just enjoying the moment. That’s why kids learn quicker, they don’t have any preconceptions about how things „should be“, they just do what feels natural

Thank you! This is how to stick your composing with the voice! Sometimes people need to break free from their instruments or voice applicatures/patterns/cliches, but this is the cure for an opposite problem: compose organic and singable parts instead of smth abstract and almost impossible to perform.

If you could, I’d love to see a video for getting a really soft and pretty mixed voice. Kind of like a tenor would sound when hitting an F, since that’s the note I’m going for. I can hit it with mixed, but can’t find the right power and amplification to make it match my chest’s power as well as brightness.

Just thanks a lot for another so much helpful video again !! I’ve been following u for a long time, I’ve never been disappointed and I’ve improved my singing skills !!! I’m a massive fan of singers like Matt Bellamy, Thom Yorke, Jeff Buckley, Freddie Mercury, voices with a high and wide range, hard to hit for I , having a low range. I tried, straining on my voice and imitating these singers at the same pitch : honestly I succeeded, but it wasn’t me and I completely screwed my voice up for the 3 next days. But that video is one of those which give me confidence to sing with my own voice, my proper range and songwriting so much more easily.

Always a fan, something important comes to mind. It's obvious but maybe you could remind novice viewers about it more - warming up. I also sing, have recorded lots, also inspired by the same singers you are. I can't hardly sign two notes if I don't do a good 45 minute warm up...90 minutes even better. You're an amazing teacher with a really cool approach but novices need to know that hard rock signing above the first male passagio just does't happen reliably with a rigorous warm up. Chris Cornel, Axel Rose, guys like these are known to have warmed up 1-2 hours before doing anything important. Just mention it more, is all I'm suggesting. And yeah...Save 10% :)

The tools you provide are useless when I leave the video and don't apply what you are teaching me.
I watch and listen in order to learn, I'm applying this to my practice tonight.
    Thanks Chris.
