Instead of souvenirs, I’ve started buying local honey, tea, jams, or some other consumables that support local folks and when possible are unique to the area. No more clutter, and I still get an extended experience and good memories while using these special items as treats or giving as gifts.

I disagree about not buying for a hobby. Hobbies can be very helpful for people with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression and not all materials can be purchased used. I do crochet for anxiety and while I can sometimes find yarn at thrift stores, I often have to buy new yarn.

Canada here - and we have just switched to a heat pump (furnace needed to be replaced - so heat pump does heating and cooling) ~ when the temperatures reach 40 degrees celcius+ humidity, I feel it is a necessity. We don't run it super cold - but enough to be comfortable in the home. :)

I'd suggest starting by 1.) making a shopping list of what you really NEED. Let it sit for a couple days and go over it again-- chances are, you will scratch off a couple things..... then, when you shop, stick to the list, to avoid IMPULSE consumerism. If you want something that's not on your list, don't buy it right away- wait a day, or two... 2. )think of ways to use what you already have, by altering/repairing, substituting, instead of buying new stuff 3.)sorting out things that you don't use/want anymore, or that remind you of something you'd rather forget (like impulse buying and regretting spending all that money on it) and SELL it. That way, you don't hang on to it because it was expensive. 4.)establish another new "rule": only replace items- don't accumulate new/more stuff.. 5.) and finally, the good old rule from our great grandparents: use it up, wear it out, make it do, or go without.

I agree with most of the list but not #5. I live in Arizona. We had an air unit that didn't work properly for a summer and we were miserable. That is not something that you can live without living in a desert state especially when it can get up to 120 degrees. Fans just weren't enough.

When it comes to the bedding I think we should keep in mind what works for us may not work for others maybe their more of a messy family or things tend to happen where they need more bedding in general. I know we have two or three sets because we know as a family of three with 4 dogs we need the extra bedding in case one gets dirty and needs to be ashed and we still don't have enough to keep the beds made in extra dirty days

For souvenirs, I’ve purchased something I will use or consume. For example, when I was in Norway this summer, I came home with a small box or Nordic sea salt. When I visited Scotland, I bought a small cutting board with a small highland cow carved into it (but it replaced my broken bamboo one at home). In Wales, I bought a locally made bar shampoo. And in Sweden - Swedish dish cloths…those are amazing.

Saga, 💜 your vlog is so thought provoking‼️ I used to organize using empty Kleenex boxes, cereal boxes or throw-away containers. But, now, because you can allows find online the exact size product that you need, why mess with making things. They are almost always made in China from plastic or acrylic. I never thought about what happens to them, where they came from or how they were made. Even though I am much more minimalist, I have a long way to go. After starting the "Swedish Death Cleaning", I have given away tons of stuff, a grandma's 70 years worth of accumulation. It has made my life so much simpler and easier, too. Thank you for your boldness in exclaiming the need to buy less ❣️❣️❣️ Love 💜 from your American Grandma

I realize that not everyone needs air conditioning , however you need to live in the southern United States in the extreme humidity at 104 degrees for several months before you can say that with any integrity. Our summers are basically 5-6 months out of the year with humidity levels above 80% . It’s not like the heat in dryer climates. Obviously air conditioning is relatively new to the world but thousands of elderly and health compromised people are able to stay alive because it was invented .

Excellent video! I had a mixture of how it is for me. Some of these I've never bought (especially in the beauty department). I haven't even put on nail polish since high school, and I'm 58, much less used fake nails or gotten a manicure. I can't even grasp that. Thanks for adding that some people really do need AC, especially with high humidity and/or high temps. Here are some other takeaways from your video: I would like to defend your friends decor! Even though they have more items than you do, it is still only a few--SO much less than the average person! So, give them some kudos, and a hug. 🙂 Next, when you talked about linens, I had this idea: go to your grandparents house to "shop" for linens! Then they won't have so many, and you won't be buying any. I try to remember to ask my mom first on lots of things, before I try the thrift store. She lives 3 hours away, though, so sometimes I forget. One more thing: When I was on a European tour in college, I collected post cards that I then mailed to people until they ran out, a chocolate from each country, and something with their language on it, such as a matchbook. Just some ideas. I also did buy souvenirs, of course, it was the 1980s, after all! 😆

Also wearing polyester clothes, they are made entirety of chemicals and polymers and are carcinogenic, it's sad that they are also marketed as baby safe material(fireproof), when actually they are very toxic, also when washed they let out microplastics and permanently pollute our waters. Looking after things, as you mentioned for bathing suits (togs in NZ) is an aspect that's nearly forgotten. Airing clothing (other than underwear) rather than washing it all the time is something I've done all my life. I rarely need to replace any of it. Wash wool and delicates by hand on a nice sunny day. Tops and dresses I bought more than ten years ago stil look very good. Shoes as well go forever if you treat them well. Bags, bicycles, computers, cars, furniture ... they can last so much longer than they often do. There are only so many things you can look after, and that in itself prevents you buying too much stuff.

I so enjoy yr videos, such thoughtful reflections. Maybe it’s the ND mind in you connecting but you make a lot of sense and I find your logic soothing.
I’d put forwards that Eyelashes might be preferred for those with the full body alopecia, but other than that I agree, along with fake nails, superfluous.
Air conditioning; what a relief to see someone under 30 realise we can live without it and that it’s certainly not feasible for everyone to have it!
    Unkindly true!
With decor we use vases and candle holders as functional ornaments, candles are a part of managing ASD sensitivities and self care, they are used and the glass recycled into use here :) or recycled with the council.
We have a few art pieces but they are mostly thrifted, as are many things we have. But simple is good for us and clears the mind.
I’d do less belongings, and have done previously in my life, but adapted for my partner, though they know things need to perform or they get sold or passed on - but always with permission or blessing, and never by coercion or tantrum.
    Free choices are a blessing.

I disagree about the air conditioner. People die here in Texas in the very hot summers from the heat. You can’t insulate an apartment you rent, lots of times the windows are painted shut and when the outside air is 105-115 opening the window will not cool you down. I don’t like too muchcooling like some restaurants do where I need a sweater but I’m sure the waiters and cooks are hotter than me.

It’s one thing to say..‘don’t buy all these things’ …however, it would be nice to just acknowledge some of the challenges to not purchase either from unethical companies or to avoid plastic etc. I don’t think it’s really helpful to anyone to say ‘don’t buy it’ ( makes sense for a few items..just can go without) but for most items it would be helpful to actually provide the alternatives. For example…’plastic’ clothing…it would be lovely to be able to afford a $400 sweater made from natural fibres and ethically made. However, that isn’t reasonable for most people. To shop almost anywhere else ..even most of the supposedly ‘sustainable’ brands make the majority of their items cut with some synthetic fibre. And linen is extremely expensive even if it can be found. Addressing the challenges and giving alternatives and possible steps..progress over perfection would be much more helpful and effective in helping people make some better changes. Just something to consider when making more of these types of videos.

I agree so much with you on so many things…. I am not a minimalist but I do not buy stuff. It is mostly due to the 66 years of living. Two sets of linens. We had down sized our home 20 years ago now. From a 3000 sq ft home to about 1800 sg-ft, home, that was the hardest. I am still divesting of things that I need no longer for my kids not to have to deal with. I don’t like pressure sales at all! When out kids were little we got these coins that were pressed in a machine that were from a place. It was cheep and fit in a pocket. And or a scrap book. I don’t want stuff! I have too much !

I can't stand scented things. Perfume included. I get complete asthmatic.
I did buy some clothes in Florida and I'm very happy with my choices. Gonna check out the second hand stores in Stockholm this spring.
Home decor... yes, they do take up space. We do have some though because my hubby wants them. He's not a minimalist. We compromise.
I'm too tired to care for my nails. When they grow and get long, I file them but keep them natural.
I inherit clothes from my daughter and sometimes from my mom lol!
I found a very nice pair of pants from my mom's pile of clothes. She's decluttering every now and then. Anyway, they fit me perfectly! So now I don't have to search for a second pair of pants.
I very rarely eat fast food. I just don't like the taste.
I've given my storage containers to my hubby hahaha!
We have so many bags including tote bags, but I've decluttered some. I've noticed that IKEA bags are great when moving. Plus carrying wood for the fire.
Souvenirs and merch... a lots have been decluttered. No idea why I even bought them.
I cut my own hair so I don't buy at a hairdresser like shampoos etc.

I love how influencers…. Esp TH-cam platformers…. Will have a video about saving money…. But smack in the middle of their video…. They promote you to buy something that they are sponsoring….
and you know it’s not cheap because they give you a code to use that will help with a discount…. Smh
And this is not including the merchandise of theirs (a book, cups, shirts) they want you to purchase

It's always good to ask yourself - do I really NEED it? - as opposed to "do I WANT it". I need a rice cooker because it allows my autistic brain to grasp cooking and make sustainable food, otherwise I have to rely on pre made and junk stuff. But I don't NEED a coffee machine or a kitchen blender. Sure I might want one if I see a commercial, but should I buy it? No, because it solves no problem that I have. I try to check all my purchases with this filter after I discovered simple living and minimalism.

Thank you for this video. I don't buy a lot of stuff because I don't enjoy it, buying clothes is a nuisance to me and so I use everything as long as I possibly can - and even so I have quite some clothes that I don't use, same with shoes. For storage I usually use marmalade glasses or yogurt glasses etc. The one thing I'm definitely guilty of is buying art supplies. I do use a lot but some things are definitely not necessary or add too much waste and I get to think about either alternatives or just not using them, markers of any kind for example. Another thing I often question is toys for my kids, there's so much nasty plastic stuff around, even if I don't buy much of these, they still get it for birthdays or Christmas... lots to think about and remember before buying new things. So, thanks again 🔥❤️

One important thing I feel you missed and should be there for wealthy developed nations, is air travel. Some in the USA and Europe to take more than 30 flights per year (some even 100, when flying for work). Cheap flights have contributed to a lot of pollution. If you reduce your flying to just a few times per year(s), it can reduce GHG emissions and a lot of cabin waste, in the form of disposable plastics.

For the hobby, I disagree a little bit. A hobby is quite useful for one’s mental health. I think one should first use all of their current stock of materials for their hobby before buying another one. Like in painting, don't buy multiple tubes of the same paint but just buy one and when its gone, thats the time you should buy it.
Also for the kitchen appliances, I think buy those that are essential to you and that are multi-purpose. Also I think that kitchen tools are the ones who makes more clutter. Especially those who has only one use. Like the egg separator thingy, a crinkle cutter for fries, or a cotton candy maker, etc.

I don't understand why you shouldn't buy things for hobbies. We love to go cycling and have bikes and good panniers, a 2-man tent, sleeping mats and sleeping bags and a cooker. For hiking we each have a big backpack and for climbing we have climbing gear. Recently, we each got a neoprene suit for when we go sailing.
Our life is certainly better rather than worse because of these things.
The things last a long time; my down sleeping bag, for example, is 35 years old.

There is one significant problem with simply stopping buying stuff when thinking about the health of the people making these cheap plastic items. That's all well and good except we must go one step further and support alternatives for these people. They too have families that they need to take care of therefore needing an income. Simply stopping buying without advocating for alternative income for people is only solving half the problem.

I disagree on the condiments, simply because you framed it in a very black and white way. The key, as always, is to be intentional about what you bring into your home. If you cook a lot and actually finish your condiments, then have at it. Just be mindful of what you genuinely use, and what you believe your fantasy self would use. And of course, only buy the former.

Also I think you are brave to go with your opinions despite your friend's confusion or disagreement regarding your topic 😅
But you have to be kinder to yourself, don't go into extremism even in minimalism. People swing between wants and needs... It's normal. Eventually we'll be old enough to be tired enough to follow just a handful of things that we do and we'll be satisfied with that...
I'm saying this to you because I saw many of your content related to your own experience with ill mental health.
I haven't watched them, I don't if that's your remote or recent past.

That is awesome. May I add that air conditioners are not a necessity in Europe, but in South East US, you really would not be able to live without them. We have highs of 90 plus degrees (36C) for three months straight, with no break at night. What's worse it comes with high humidities. It's very difficult to live here without air conditioning, because your house only gets hotter and hotter under the bright sun.

Great video! I'm trying to live more like my grandparents before mas consumerism. We used to make crocheted bikinis. Board shorts were natural materials & no wetsuits. I did buy one pair of shoes for arthritis & real ruber thongs. My leather boot uppers are like new but the soles now don't last. Using external drives makes laptops last longer. Phone credit can last for a year if only used as a phone. Haven't bought clothes for five years but still have plenty. Acrylic paints are harmful to the environment. Weaving from natural materials is a wonderful pastime. We were born with nothing & can't take things with us when we die. Natural sheets can be reused asother things & can return to the land. Just gave away sheets. Growing food can teach people what things can't be composted & should not be bought. Library of Things to share & Repair Cafe in every town would be great. Dance in empty rooms.

I will NOT buy used because I have experienced problems with used tech. My all cotton active wear is 15 years old.I lost a lot of weight and my active wear is too big. So, I will be buying cotton active wear second hand. I only have two sets of sheets and two comforters but many blankets because I have friends who cover and stay and I also have 6 dogs they use them. I downsized from 10 tablecloths (inherited from my deceased mom) to two tablecloths. Been using the same appliances for 30 years. They are starting to wane, so got to start looking for new ones. When I get home, I can get individual prints made if I want them, but if I want to relive an experience, I can pull up a photo on the computer. Among the advantages of advancing age (I'm 78) is the realization that more "stuff" doesn't make me any happier, and that it's OK if the stuff I DO have is getting old. If it still works for its intended purpose, what's the problem?

When you go to the hairdresser and they start pushing shampoo etc on you it is because that is what their boss told them to do and they are given a sales quota that they have to meet or get fired.. The business does not make money on the service, they make money on the products sold. Manicurists, hairdressers, facialists etc are not paid even minimum wage by the owner. They are expected to make their money on upsetting, tips and commissions. If they don't upsell the client or sell enough product, they get fired. And that is why they push that product so hard.
