The land that you ride on has been a dream ride for many! I am 55 years old, still ride an XR400 and still lay in bed at night dreaming of the trails similar to what you have, You are a very fortunate person!! The trails along the creek bank crossing the creek at times is heaven!
I am very lucky to have these trails. I grew up riding on them when I started riding almost 30 years ago! These trails have been around since the late 60s/early 70s I know. This is all smack dab in the middle of the suburbs too! Thanks for watching!
+Wayne Walker its definitely a mountain goat! perfect for just screwing around in the woods. pretty much goes where you want it when you have good rubber in the rear.
I'm a 2 stroke guy first and foremost. I grew up riding dirt bikes. Back in the 80's when 2 strokes ruled the world, the only 4 strokes I had respect for were XR's. I'm looking at getting a dual sport and I'm debating on getting an older XR for the reliability, possibly a DR 400 or do I go with something newer and lighter but give up the reliability factor. I have a 400 EX so I am partial to the XR 400 over the 650. The only problem is nobody wants to sell there used XR 400's which only goes to show how well liked they are and I don't see Honda making them again so I can't just buy a new one. I like riding but don't want the maintenance of say a KTM or Honda CRF450 RL.
i hear ya man...they are getting harder to find not completely beat on or priced too high. I actually bought a 2nd XR400 and put the Tusk dual sport kit on it and use that as my main dual sport bike because its so capable and reliable. keeping in mind the bike isnt that fast on the top end, i try to stay away from highways but for around my area to get from one section of trails to the next or taking back roads it feels really good. I also have a dual sport kitted XR650R, and while that thing is an absolute beast on the open trails and big hill climbs its a handful in the woods for me and I always gravitate back to my 400s. I refuse to part with either 400 or the 650R though. both are awesome for different reasons. a buddy of mine with a newer KTM500 also recently picked up an XR400 as a second low maintenance bike he will add the tusk kit to as well.
thanks! its actually the stock muffler with 3 small holes drilled in the spark arrestor...if you google "gordons mods xr400" you will see exactly where i drilled. its nice because it doesnt make it obnoxiously loud. since i ride near homes i dont piss people off :)
+Miguel Falco Mille to be honest...i cant even remember lol...i'll have to look when i get home. I'm pretty sure its just a Bridgestone motocross tire, but I'll get the specs for you later.
Do it...you won't be disappointed. Great low maintenance trouble free bikes you only have to change oil and clean air filters on. I'm still on the original top end with this bike and it's a '98. Still has great compression and doesn't use oil!
@@Garage2Trail Thanks!!! Haven't had a kick start bike since my Trail 70 in the 80's.... I've seen some pretty good tutorials on how to fire these up relatively easy... The bike is plated, so that is bonus, since a lot of the dirt roads here in Texas require plated vehicles.
@@jordesign it’s easy to start once you get the procedure down. Couple primer kicks then get it at TDC and give it one big full kick usually does it for me. I had to do the “Vermont trick” to get my other 400 plated since I had no title for it and these didn’t come street legal from the factory. Google Vermont trick…it works!
@@Garage2Trail Thanks. I am familiar with the Vermont trick, but this bike is already plated with a clean title, so I'm golden. Appreciate your insight.
Hello my friend, do u have problems checking oil on dipstick? I have changed oil, after a 150kmh od riding i wanted to check it (properly) ,cause i had few motorcycles with oil in the frame so im familiar about it. Sometimes when i ride and it get hot i turn it off, stop on a firm and flat surface and it shows none on a dipstick and i dont.screw it in all the way, just put it in frame, same ride 30 mins later it shows on half of dipstick between high and low. It annoys me, i poured 2l or 2quarts motul 7100 10w40 full sinthetic instead of a ipone katana offroad 10w40. Somehow i trust more motul. Thanks in advance if u respond. Cheers My sprockets are 15-45 and im driving only in forrest and mountains. Cheers!! 👍
Hello, I don't normally have any issues. i always add just a bit less than 2 quarts of oil, then run it for a good 5 mins idle on level ground. immediately shutting off the engine, I check the oil level. thats the tricky part...checking it right after you shut it off. it reads more accurate the longer you let it warm up. I'm running a 14 tooth sprocket up front with the stock rear. works good in the tight technical stuff.
@@Garage2Trail Thanks for reply , it means to me, my honda just wont register oil untill i ride it ,sometimes in ride shows none ,few moment later it shows closer to high. Thanks once aggain and all the best to u. I m from Serbia we r short on quality oils ,whats ur opinion of motul 7100 10w40 sinthetic that i poured or sould i search for some better?
@@zele3372 i'm glad to help!...just make sure you put 1.9quarts in to start and add from there after you let it warm up completely. my manual says to have it idle for 5 mins on level ground and avoiding revving the engine. i've had my XR400 for over 20 years and always let it idle for a while before checking. the only oil i've ever used in mine is Honda GN4 10w-40. I cant say I know much about the Motul oil, but if its designed for wet clutch systems like the XR then it should be good.
@@Garage2Trail Thank you very much. Al the best man. Ur honda.is great ,u can see mine on my channel ,i bought mine about a month ago. Cheers, and happy rides with ur machine. 👍😁
if he has experience riding for a little while yes...not that its an out of control over the top powerful bike...its just on the heavy side and tight quarters might be tricky for someone not used to it. plenty of low end and mid range grunt for the woods, but runs out of steam up top. may want to think about changing the sprockets out get some higher gearing. guess it depends on what he'll be riding more (street or trail).
Thanks for the feedback. I've had experience riding a Yamaha ttr230 at a friend's place and at the moment I have been riding a Honda ct200 ag bike. The ct weighs about 130kg so I don't think I would have problems with the weight of the bike. I'll probably be doing about 50/50 street/trail riding.
Try the stock gearing first. They’re good bikes in general, but you’ll need experience to refine your taste. Note the phrasing, it’s a do-all bike that’s dead reliable. Mods are for when you decide which direction you wanna go w/it
Where are you located in Pittsburgh? I live just north of the city. Past holiday park. I’m thinking about getting one of these. I’m currently riding a yz250
David Wolf the XR is an excellent woods/trail bike and can be a versatile ride. It's the ultimate play bike that can be modified to race hare scrambles and enduros. Motocross isn't it's forte though.
Hi Dan, I live in the north hills. the trails in the video are off behind Clover Hill golf course if you know where thats at? do you dual sport your DR?

Beautiful area to ride.. Love my 400r..simple,reliable and practically indestructible!
I always loved to do single track through the woods.Nice video sharing, thanks!
Thank you! Nothing like flowing single track through the woods. Thanks for watching!
Nice shot between the trees up that climb from a dead stop!
You obviously know how to ride. Thanks for the vid. Time to pull the trigger on the '00 XR near me!
you wont regret it. they are great bikes with basic maintenance! and thank you for the compliment...ive been riding since i was 13...39 now :)
That's one heck of a ride!! You Sir, are quite the Honda XR Pro rider!! Awesome bike.
Thank you!
Ya gotta love the XR 400: climb a steep, root infested, tree branch littered, leaf covered hill from a dead stop!

Startled me when I saw it too lol
Nice riding, but I'm thinking of a fucking bear might pop out of nowhere!
haha no bears that i know of in those woods!
spooked the deer!
Excelente moto, pero debes aprender a usarla bien, no debes hacer las bajadas con el embrague activado, el motor debe ayudar a los frenos.
Was just gonna say this is definitely PA or somewhere around it
PA definitely has its own style lol
Trees look naked, how come its not cold outside
It was an unseasonably warm couple days in March here in PA. It's usually freezing still at that time.
I have a chance to pick on elf these up for $1500... I am very tempted....
