The struggle is real! I hate when I stall out in conditions like that on my XR4...heavy and hard to start. I'd be letting out a stream of profanity in that situation.😂
I've had my 98 since 1999 and I recently bought a very low hrs all original 2001 400 to add to my stable I love the bike so much. I still prefer it to my 650R in the woods.
Just got a XR400r myself a 1996 model. It came street legal with supermoto wheels. Unforuntately it didnt come with the dirt wheels. I am in the process of buying a set of dirt wheels and tires right now can't wait to see how she feels off road.
You will love it! Just make sure the sprocket gearing is close to stock so it’s not too tall in the woods. I know some people with supermoto bikes change the gearing to be more road friendly.
Thank you! Starting procedure if everything. A few primer kicks with decompression lever, put it at TDC and give her one big swift kick with a little gas usually works for me. Gotta make sure your valves are adjusted though first.
sorry for the late reply! let me check when i get home and i'll let you know. i think i'm 14 up front with stock in the rear. allows for good low end chugging and i can hit hills in 2nd gear from a dead stop at the bottom. 1st gear for super tight almost idle crawling.
@@Garage2Trail the stock 15/45 is not that good on climbs on its 2nd gear. That's why I'm asking what you are using cause you're doing great on the climbs on your vid
@@cHaotix210 i agree kylvin, i do have the 14t sprocket up front with 45 in the rear. that one tooth gives excellent low end grunt. you def loose some top end speed but in my trails i rarely hit 4th gear
Hard to say as I’ve never ridden a KLX or DR but I do know these XRs are hard to beat for simplicity and reliability with enough power to get me anywhere I’ve wanted to go or any hill climb that I’ve attempted. This 98 that I have is still on the original top end!
Great video exactly what I needed to see from this bike. Thank you.
Tractory goodness, but they do like to fall over frequently, and picking them up gets old when you are old.

Ugh, same. Sometimes my back is sore from kicking it over, my bigger piston does not help. Not to mention if it's hot out, I live in Texas.
yes my xr 400 is a pain in the ass to start
My XR400 is the best trail bike I've ever ridden. Sold my CRF450R for one!

Wow. Amazing video. Mine’s a bitch to start.

Thank you! Awesome riding btw..
Thanks man, I appreciate it!
What's your sprocket combination?
Here in the philippines I'm riding same terrain as yours. Thanks 😁

You think this is better than a new klx300? I'm really considering buying one or a dr350
