  • You can almost hear the whistle blowing in these couple of movie clips that I put together from old home movies. They where taken by my dad (Ben Harris) from our house which was located on the SW corner of 4th and John St. Included is a few seconds of the house to give you a sense of location as to where the film was shot from in 1953/4. The train tracks ran north and south along side of John St. If the wind was out of the east....you always had a nice dose of coal burning smoke as the trains passed by. In the winter scene....you can see the smoke coming from the caboose's chimney to keep the guy at the end of the train warm. One thing for sure....the caboose has gone the way of the Dodo bird...you just don't see them anymore at the end of the trains. Sit back and enjoy these few minutes from the past. All aboard.

The first train was the Anderson to Elkhart through freight, the second was the Wabash local, and the next two clips were the Anderson city job that switched out industries. Thanks for sharing!!
