  • Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching. Today, is unique, special, and surprising on several levels!!! Ethan and I hop in the Western Star unit #8, the Vulcan V70, 35 ton towing & recovery unit to tow a wrecked road tractor (prime mover) to a body shop. The Western Star was my dad's truck and this is Ethan's first time operating it on a customer job. Dad would be proud. This type of job is the "bread & butter" for a lot of towing companies, so it is important to do it safely and professionally, which I believe Ethan is doing quite well. I am a bit jealous on this one though. While we were dropping the wrecked truck at the body shop, Ethan witnessed a loaded dump trailer roll over while it was attempting to dump rocks!!! I come around the truck in time to see the dust still flying from the incident. Thankfully, nobody was injured. The things we see in this job.... As noted in the video, we didn't get the job of working this rollover, but wait for next week's video!!! Go ahead and watch this video while you are waiting...LOL. I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

    Even though ive seen a few rollovers in my time, it still staggers me how much the frame of a truck can twist and not break in these situations. Ok its unlikely to be road worthy afterwards but the fact something you think of as being solid can bend so much and (mostly) back again is mad...

    • @JV-pu8kx
      @JV-pu8kx ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Try sitting on a bridge, waiting to turn, and have heavy trucks using one of the other lanes, making the bridge deck bounce!

      @timothygeiger8271 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You would be surprised what is able to be repaired & put back on the road. A lot of them can be repaired, it's just the funding to do the repairs. Some companies will collect the insurance money, & if the insurance company totals it out, buy it back from insurance for pennies on the dollar & eventually rebuild.
      I've driven for companies that do exactly that. The companies i drove for had their own body shops, so they could rebuild for much cheaper. They can straighten some frames.

    • @isallah1kafir196
      @isallah1kafir196 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes Iron is one amazing material, it can twist, and most often the frame is hardened too, this is one reason one should not weld such frames, after one accident. The old VW-Beetle had torsion bars as spring axles, one end of it was fixed in a pipe and on the other had were the wheel-bearing with brakes mounted, and it could twist when the wheel hit a whole or pump in the road...

    • @litz13
      @litz13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sumter Wrecker just posted one where the frame twisted a full 180 degrees -- and still largely untwisted when pulled back onto the road and righted. Still done for.

      I worked in tunneling and had some great teachers, they taught me so much about safety it came as second nature after a while. How to read a rock face, what is going to fall etc. A small stone will drop before a big one, so if a pebble hit your hard hat, get out of there before the big un hit's.

    Those Cascadia hood latches: sometimes it helps to have both sides engaged before locking any of them down. The action of locking it down on one side puts twist on the hood and raises the other side enough to make engaging the latch difficult, if not impossible.

    • @ecarroll3723
      @ecarroll3723 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or not be wearing thick gloves while trying to latch it like he was doing.. That's why Ethan was able to get it and showed how it was done without wearing gloves.

    Your dad seemed like a real class act when he was in the videos. If it was up to me, I'd leave the color scheme of the "Big Star" just as it is. It just wouldn't be the same if you were to change it from the burgundy to blue.
    Also, I've always loved those hood wings. They're "old school" but still functional additions. My dad always had one on his conventional tractors and I've had one on my Classic XL since a few weeks after driving it off of the dealers lot brand new back in late 2005.
    As always, be safe and God bless you, your crew and, your equipment.

      I was thinking the same thing. The truck is very special to them, might just as well keep the color scheme that Ron’s dad chose on the truck and use that as a memorial for his dad. Updating the lights for safety reasons I would fully understand since emergency tow and recovery is extremely dangerous. You could call it the centerpiece of the truck collection.

The 2 Freightliners I still own, a 1995 FLD12064 and a 2006 Classic XL also have metal grilles. Those coolers ain't cheap!

    I had to drive a truck for my dad when my sister was moving across the state line and I got into the truck at their place and when I was leaving i hit the brakes to see how good they were the hood flipped open. So that was a weird feeling and glad it didn't happen on the road

    lol , watching Ron & Ethan work together is like me & my Son working together .. most of the time we're almost telepathic , but sometimes our solutions to a problem couldn't be more opposite

    Yup I agree with your assessment of the hoid latch system on the Cascadia's.

      I know. I've had instances where i was only able to latch one side. Not ideal, but it happens now & then.

      probably the only hood latches that are worse are the ones on the 387's. the releases are inside the cab and easily bend. when I was at Martin Transport, they constantly were replacing them.

    Extra excitement that wasn't at your expense!! He didn't watch where his tires were. Very soft ground to be raising a rig that high! Good video Ron & Ethan

      Dumping an "Endo" is a bit of a crap shoot, even with perfect ground conditions. If the load sticks, up front and to one side, it really throws the balance off. What can be bad for a regular dump truck is magnified because of the height the front of the trailer must go to, to fully dump.
      Probably why I've seen only ratty looking tractors doing endo work. I've never seen a brand new tractor used for it, anyway ...
      Those big, oversized off road haul trucks are designed so the bed/back can flip without laying over the front, where the engine & operator are. Tip it back upright, go back to work. Letsdig18 has shown a few instances of that in the past year.

    In some ways i think this truck should stay the way it is as a tribute to your Dad. If you do repaint it, you should try to put something on it with maybe his picture "In memory of." Just my suggestion to help keep his memory alive as long as possible.

    Ron;
    It's easy to tell that you are working in a parking lot and NOT on the side of the highway. Your more relaxed!
    Thanks for teaching Ethan.

    39:40 I've used a chain binder to pull slack in a tight chain before. Hook one end on the frame and the other as far down the chain as you can get then tighten.

    I favor upgrading the truck but keeping the old style paint as a tribute to “DAD” Pratt. Could do a polish. But, you know what he would want. Maybe he would have loved to see his truck decked out in new colors, then do that.
