The Modern Jazz Quartet is an accomplished group - my experience of the MJQ goes back to the early 60s - what a great jazz improvisation! such a pleasant experience.
Their recording called "Blues on Bach" remains my favorite MJQ recording. Something universal about their determination to educate listeners with quality compositions with improvisation is remarkable today as we listen to this group so many years since they retired from performing.
Just wonderful. The Porgy and Bess album is something to treasure. Saw them when an art student, at Bristol’s Coulston Hall in 1967, little knowing of Coulston’s fortune and fame being gleaned from the slave trade. Dare say John Lewis & co. didn’t know either.
This should be required listening today.I heard the quartet live at my undergraduate university! Stellar performances by four of the most non-charismatic high quality music figures in modern jazz deserve a separate hearing today. If you need a reminder of what you might have missed here it is.
What a wonderful set. And the quality is superb considering it’s now over sixty years old. Bliss. Can’t believe it’s had so few comments, likes or views... Thanks for sharing this
Ken Burns has many good things to say about this group. This is iconic jazz without affiliation with any religion. Milt Jackson and John Lewis provide me with inspiration about music lasting for days.
For longevity alone this group deserves a place in the hall of fame for jazz where ever it is to be found. Certainly Rutgers has something to say about these musicians. Ken Burns has a good documentary about jazz and this quartet gets coverage for rightful reasons with these personnel.
Lest we forget....pianist John Lewis served in the Italian campaign in Italy during WWII and bassist Percy Heath served as a Tuskegee Airman in WWII. That alone speaks for itself, but when you combine it with their innovative musical contributions for over half a century, it puts these guys on a level where very few reside.
Indeed, and anyway the video quality is a little too good for 1958, given by the official french TV archives site (often wrong): m.ina.fr/video/I00005033/le-modern-jazz-quartet-1er-theme-i-love-you-porgy-video.html . It could be in 1964, like in this BBC video: th-cam.com/video/cthrku65Bxc/w-d-xo.html (John Lewis beard and haircut match :-) or more likely on the following year, since the recording of "Porgy and Bess" was not completed until 1965:. in October 1965, the MJQ played in concert in Paris: www.lemonde.fr/archives/article/1965/10/07/le-m-j-q-a-paris_2194917_1819218.html
Meravigliosi , unici , sempre . Ascoltarli e' un regalo all'anima. Grazie ! ❤❤
There are not enough superlatives to describe these gentlemen and their instinctual fine taste.
Blessed are these artists for their contribution to my jazz education last century and today.

This is not from 1958. The MJQ recording of Porgy and Bess dates from 1964.
