  • This uses a new feature in iOS 17 together with a cheap HDMI capture dongle which you can plug into the iPad's USB C port. It'll work with new iPhones too! There are a couple of beta apps I've been testing; both are low-latency and are great for playing games through.
    The adapter I bought is here on Amazon; amzn.to/34xv7Lk
    The apps you can use for this so far are;
    Dongled - Free - apps.apple.com...
    Video Assist - $80; apps.apple.com...
    Genki Studio - Free - apps.apple.com...
    Camo Studio - Free - apps.apple.com...
    HDMI Monitor Orion - Free - apps.apple.com...
    Capturino - Free - apps.apple.com...
    I only recommend products I buy & would use myself, and all opinions expressed here are my own. This content may contain affiliate links that (at no additional cost to you) may earn me a small commission.

    I dont understand the use case of that. Unless i cant use my iPad Pro on the run (lets say when going by train for several hours) it doesn’t make sense.
    As long as the Switch (or whatever) needs to send to the video through hdmi (which means, the switch needs to sit in a charged dock), you can always just use your TV, or am I completely wrong?
    I mean, sitting outside with friends and maybe like to play Mario kart would be cool, but it’s not working if the switch needs to be in the docking station to send the video with hdmi.

      I used a Switch because that's the only console I own :) It shows the general concept of using an iPad as an external screen for practically anything.. so if you do have a small console like the Xbox Series S, you can take that with you and use the iPad as the display.. maybe for camping where you have access to power, but don't want to take a TV.

      Only if the dongle and the software combination allow you to do it. Most of them can only go up to 4K@60FPS and they're using upscaling tech to give you the crisp picture. I believe some apps (like Orion for iPad) will give you "AI-powered 4K upscaling" if you pay for it (4.99)..
      Honestly, the dongle and the app don't disappoint; what is disappointing is that for the Switch, you still have to route the video signal through the dock, which kind of defeats the purpose of portability. I'm sure there are ways around it (such as using the Genki option), but once you start getting a bunch of hardware gadgets involved, it's not as 'portable' as it first seemed.
