Oh thank gosh. I've wanted to do this for a minute, though not for gaming. Just wanna plug my iPad Pro in as a reference display because it's nicer than my IPS panels.

Just tried with an elgato cam link 4k. No screen tearing or lag. Actually pretty cool! Edit: I’m using a generic usb c adapter to connect on an iPad Pro M1.
thats probably because the input processing is being made by the capture card and not by the ipad. the ipad is just getting the information already processed. but i think its amazing that an ipad is actually supporting input signals when almost every other device out there is just supporting output signals.
@@ReiHerrera that’s fair. I wanna say that it’s using UVC for the video stream, so in theory a faster processing unit in the adapter would cause less lag overall

The screen tearing is likely a symptom of the capture device rather than the app. Going with a higher end USB capture card from AverMedia or Elgato and using a USB A adapter would probably fix the tearing issue and maybe improve latency if you're someone who would use this setup enough to make that worth it.

Nice! Please help, I've been trying with the HD60S, but it doesn't seem to be working. Does the iPad provide enough power to the capture card or do I need to have another hub to provide power? How did you connect everything together? 😅
I saw this video and immediately saw a use case for using iPad as an external monitor for things like connecting to mini PC's / raspberry pi's where input lag isn't really a big deal. If it can play games with minor input lag, it'll be a great fit for this!
That exactly what went through my head was, hooking up a raspberry pie also a lot of other people state there better apps and better devices that remove the lag and latency
This is a really slick feature that I didn't know about until your video, so thanks. I'm going to install the app on my iPad 10 and play around with it.
Ok i love my ipad mini even more now! Ill probably get a mac mini for this. But would love to see the ipad mini with faster refresh rate and brighter screen. But this also makes me wonder what android have to compete with this.
Tried this with an ElGato Cam Link and it didn’t work. Apparently ElGato capture cards just don’t work with the iPad (I suspect it might be a power thing). Anyway, glad to hear latency with PS5 was minimal!
This is cool to watch. About 15 years ago, I tried to run old consoles through my mac. The only option was a $400 "tv capture card" made by Elgato, and I believe it only allowed for cable tv (not gaming). Obviously, so much has changed, but a $20 solution is amazing 😂
Try a different capture card and see if it improves performance. I have two capture cards, one by atomos and one by elgato and the elgato one is noticeably faster and has less lag and less connection issues vs the atomos one
This saved me a lot of money because I already own an iPad mini six. This will be fine but I’m planning on streaming on Twitch in future soon. Play a bit of PS2 and this saved me a lot of money because I thought I had to get like a fool on streaming, PC and everything.
The latency might also be due to the capture card interacting with the App on the iPad having issues. It’s unlike regular displays just showing the signal perfectly. But most of the times it’s due to the cable.
The requirement of a capture card means this is a bit more expensive…. But for sure apple has to work on a full on integrated version where you don’t need a capture card. Just one cable, or an HDMI dongle so you can keep the iPad charged so it doesn’t die in the middle of gaming. I’d see this working well on the go with anything, especially a Nintendo switch in the car with a 100 watt hour battery that can support both devices, or just the switch in docked mode. Cuz Xbox’ and the PS5 would be pretty power hungry.
