  • A fishing trip I won't forget as fish often intercepted the simple rig before it hit bottom! Sea Trout (Weakfish) have seen some very lean years in recent decades. This trip gives hope for the future. An attempt at striped bass in the final minutes of the trip ended painfully.

I grew up on left hand retrieve spinning reels. So when I started using conventional and bait casters I opted for left hand retrieve reels. It was natural for me and they are more abundant that 10 or 20 yrs ago. Love the new camera angle.

Being the only lefty in my family grew up using right handed conventional that my Dad and uncle would give to me. John your right, its what we did and was all I saw growing up on LI and fishing every day. Right handed conventional and left handed spinning reels is all I saw. Of course all Penn!!

Yep, lefty retrieve for me. Fresh and saltwater. Grew up in the 70's surf fishing in Far Rockaway for fluke and porgy fishing at Beach Channel Drive. Currently I use 9' tsunami airwave , 1-3.25 oz with a Shimano Ultegra 2500, 15 lb. braid and 20lb leader. I know, small reel, it's great for inshore fishing without getting tired of casting. Great video.

When I started fishing, I used left handed spinning reels. For 30 years, I’ve only use left handed baitcasting reels. I use them for bass tournaments. My surf reels are all left hand baitcasters. I live in Virginia and fishing up and down the east coast.

Grew up in CT now a RI guy but fish the gut and the sound a lot. Raised conventional right hand reel left handed spinning. When I got serious about my fishing a few years ago in my mid-late 20s and bought more permanent gear I went with left handed conventional. Just bought the avet sx as my go to in L/H.

John, I grew up in Boston area and I fish left-handed bait caster, just yesterday in the Key Bridge area of Patapsco River near Baltimore, I caught 40+ stripers on a white 4-inch paddle tail and all where over 20 inches, big was 26. I use a 14 ft-john boat with 25 horse Yamaha and a 65 lb thrust trolling motor. Getting it done by the little john boat. I also use left for all my spinning gear. Your videos are great.

There were only right hand retrieve conventional Penn reels growing up fishing in the late 50's and 60's that I can remember fishing the Long Island Sound and Ocean. I grew up in the Bronx and that is all I remember we used. In the 60's I started using spinning reels in fresh water. They had left hand retrieves and it took a while to get used to that! Thanks for the video John!

Like the new camera angle a lot, I’m right handed all my life with a bait caster I held the rod in left hand and reeled with my right hand, believe it or not last year I bought a new reel and switched holding the rod in my right hand, reeling left handed, just felt normal, can’t explain why the change but just didn’t feel normal the way I did it all my life, I’m 53 now live in Levittown pa, been fishing all my life, learned at a early age to use a bait caster for bass, just bought your skinner fluke rod from Amazon, can’t wait to give it a try with my new Daiwa Lexa reel

Love this video. Your rig is working smooth. Weak fishing brings back good memories of when the weaks infiltrated the Bay off of Amityville and Lindenhurst in the 1970s. We used salty dog lures back then. It is interesting to see that pink colors still work today. The weakfish were everywhere. Good to see them.

I am a right handed Californian who uses a left hand retrieve baitcaster. It feels more natural for me with my dominant hand controlling the rod and thus using more of my right arm for the cast. It also helps me feel like I’m able to finesse / control all baits better this way.

I write and eat left handed but throw right handed and grew up surf fishing so the left handed retrieve on a spinning real was natural to me. When I started fishing with conventional tackle the right handed retrieve was very unnatural and uncomfortable. Now my personal conventional and bait casting gear (including the same Quantum reel you use) on my boat are all left handed. I hate fishing with anything else. I have a lot of conventual gear for guests. The best part is that i get to keep all my personal gear to myself because no one wants to use the left handed retrieve!

I grew up fishing out of Freeport with my Dad. Fighting hoards of blues back in the day holding the pole in my left hand made me switch. Now I fish for fluke on my own boat in Port Chester, NY. LI. In fact I bought the lefty version of the Quantum bait aster you use. I also use a lot of Abu Garcia 5501, 6501, etc. going to also get a 7001. Have a collection of every left hand Penn I can find-especially 9M-LH. Have some 209M-LH, and harder to find vintage reels. Most all the vintage ones are fishable.

When I'm ice fishing I use left hand retrieve quantum accurist and In the summer I use a right hand retrieve. I find for me the I can get more power and control with my left hand above the reel and the rod butt under my right arm like you do where as in the winter the rods I've used aren't designed to be held above the reel so I hold the rod in my right with the butt braced against my forearm and reel with the left hand more like if I was using a inshore spinning rod

I grew up fishing in NJ. Started with the old Penn conventional reels as a kid in the 60s & never even knew there was such a thing as a left hand retrieve casting reel until about 10 years ago.
I remember reading articles where some of the bass masters guys recommended learning to cast left handed so you wouldn't have to switch hands and risk being out of position to hook a fish if it hit as soon as the lure landed.
I tried& found it to be a pain.
I mean, I can't cast accurately with casting gear with my right hand, so I was spending more time untangling birds nests than fishing, trying to cast left handed.
Eventually I found a casting reel with a left handed retrieve that wasn't priced way out of my range.
Now all I buy are lefties, even though I do still have most of my old stuff that I'll keep around in case someone needs to use it.
Left retrieve just feels more comfortable for me.
I can cast better, even though I'm still not good at it, and don't have to switch hands.

I just started using my great grandfather's Shakespeare reel that I refurbished and it was built in the 1950s. It is left handed only and it takes some getting used to. My left arm is my strongest arm. From Long Island but went to college in Alabama. Southerns use right handed baitcasters while northerns use left. My theory is that northerns (especially ones closer to salt water) mostly start off with spinning reels, which would make the transition to a right handed baitcaster difficult. Southerners being in an area where largemouth bass fishing is more prevalent, seem to start off with baitcasters which traditionally are right handed. Tight lines!

I use 1.5-3 oz bank sinkers at the bottom tho.

Keep the new camera angle. I use right hand retrieve casting reels, left hand retrieve spinning. I tried left hand casting, just didn't feel right. At least my method works well for me in Texas, so it should be good every where else!

I switched to left-handed conventional reels for fishing on the kayak. I have an Old Town Predator PDL with a left-hand tiller, and I found that in an emergency switching the rod back to my right hand was just too long. Having it always in my right hand, I can just stop my retrieve and grab the tiller. I always have a rod in my right hand when I am on the kayak, and I do a lot of trolling. Now that I am used to it, I actually prefer left-hand retrieve. (I'm up in NH.)

I grew up in south jersey. My spinning reels are set to left hand retrieve and my conventionals are right hand.

I am right handed and from NJ. I like the right hand retrieve, but also added a left hand retrieve Accurist to my quiver. I do like the left hand retrieve for fluke fishing, but will admit it takes some getting used to. Meaning some muscles you thought weren't really there in one arm are now being worked more in another. I like the concept of the left hand retrieve, BUT it's not really usable on the Skinner Jig and Bounce rod , as it is spiral wrapped for a right hand retrieve reel. Meaning that the twist that the spiral wrap is supposed to cancel out is now amplified. I'm currently debating getting Tackle World to make a Nexus rod to your specs but with a reverse spiral wrap for a left handed retrieve reel.

One thing I will add about left hand retrieve. You will notice very quickly how much work your right arm will be doing all day. On a right hand retrieve, you jig with your right arm you would move the rod from hand to hand after a hook set. This switch alleviates the constant pressure from your right arm. Now with a left hand retrieve and you have constant pressure on the muscles on your right arm. I believe that a left hand retrieve rod will alleviate this stress, but until I try one, I wont know for sure.

It's funny you mention right handed conventional reels. I use left handed everything, and it is quite an adjustment for me to use right handed conventional reels on boats. 90% of the time I use my own rods and reels, but when I don't, I am stuck with using right handed reels on every single boat I have ever been on. Errr...lol

I think it depends on whether or not you are casting and while you are using a compact baitcasting reel, you are not casting, so the right hand crank is not a big deal.
If you were casting and not just dropping, you usually want the crank opposite your casting arm.
So you will see a lot of right handed casting people, who actively cast, like bass fisherman or inshore baitcasting fisherman with their crank on the left, so they don't need to switch hands after the cast.
Since you are bottom fishing with a compact baitcasting reel, like the conventional reels you mentioned, it doesn't much matter.
I'm a southpaw, so I actually cast with my left hand and mostly use inshore baitcasting reels, so the right hand crank is perfect.

I'm from the Bronx and I use a left hand retrieve even though I'm right handed. I like using my dominant arm to hold the rod.

Two years ago my fiancé had a porgy on and needed help getting the hook out. I put my rod in the holder and reeled it up a few turns then went over to help her out. I got her porgy off and we both notice my rod double over and I jump across the boat and pull tight. Turned out to be two weakfish in the 20”+ range on the same buctail and teaser rig!

Lefty spinning, righty conventional. Grew up on baitcasters in Virginia Beach (the kind without a free spool, knuckle buster). Delaware now. New angle is cool.

I grew up on the Joisey Shore. When I started using conventional on the jettys for stripers I first used RHR. I quickly questioned the efficiency of switching grips/hands every cast. I hunted down an Abu Garcia C3 LHR and absolutely loved it.( not easy to find LHR reels back in the 80s n 90s. ) Throwing plugs you cast a lot. It's just logical to me.
However I do like a RHR when there's no level wind and bait fishing. I'll hold the rod with my left hand and use my left thumb to guide the line. That's more natural feeling to me.
I wasn't far from you, especially by way of water/boat but have used LHR for many decades. I might have come across 1 or 2 others but can't remember any specific meetings. I guess it's not very common where I fished, but we are out here.
Edit. PS. I am right handed with everything except at Hockey 🏒. I use left handed sticks.

Grew up largemouth bass fishing in NJ with left hand spinning gear. Bought my first freshwater baitcaster and it felt stupid and inefficient to be switching hands to cast (I’m right handed) so I went left hand retrieve. Dropping bait from a boat it doesn’t matter to me left or right but if I’m casting a lot or putting action on a lure I want to use my dominant hand. Worth noting that I didn’t start using conventionals and baitcasters until recently and left hand versions are now very available. If I grew up fishing from a boat with only right hand reels available at the time then I’m sure that would feel natural too.

Growing up fishing in lake and California Delta for striper using heavy surf spinning reel with left hand crank with 12 foot rods, first-time fish with a conventional is an abu garcia ambassador right hand, captain Dave hooked on a stingray and he told me to reel in it because he dont want to 😂😂 i was busting my knuckles because not familiar with the handle was was drawing a square with every spin 😂😂

Hey John. What are the final bass restrictions going to be? Personally I would be just fine with C&R only because that's what I do now with an occasional exception. I would really love to know your position if your willing to share. Sorry for the thread bomb.

down in South Jersey the conventional wisdom is that weakfish are named for their weak mouth so you always use a net. You are lifting them in to the boat by the leader without any problem.

I think the weak mouth thing is exaggerated. I remember the first one I ever hooked as a little kid I lost it at the shore because I was too afraid to pull on it.
